Phil Jackson has contacted Cle and Cle shot down the Melo for Love trade.
Today, Jackson contacted Boston and the Clippers to inquire and so far nothing positive has come out of the talks, meaning BOS and LAC wasn't interested in giving up any of their current assets for Melo.
Pretty soon, the Zenmaster will realize he won't be able to trade Melo to a playoff contender because Phil is asking for a star player in return, which those playoff contenders won't give up to get Anthony.
Phil Jackson will eventually realize what Carmelo's "market value" is and sense that his best option is to acquire young assets for him and move forward with the youth movement in Gotham. He will then sit down with Melo to advise him of what's happening. Phil will ask Carmelo which other teams he'd consider waiving his no-trade clause for since it's clear Jackson is hell bent on getting Melo out of NY.
That's when Jeanie and Mitch swoop in for the coup de grace.
Keep in mind, CP3 has a player opt out this summer. Chances are really good that the Clippers season will be another failure in the playoffs as the triumvirate of CP3, Blake, and Jordan just isn't good enough to get it done. Which means, there's a solid chance CP3 opts out and goes elsewhere if the right opportunity presents itself.
If the Lakers are tired of being doormats, losing patience for their underachieving squad, and want to really give their young core - Ingram, Nance, and Zubac - a couple of superstars to learn under, their best bet is to go all out and try to find a way to team up Carmelo and Chris Paul.

A soon to be 33 year old SF who has been the conference finals one time in his career, and a soon to be 32 year old PG who has never been to the conference finals in his career,

Yup...two superstars in their 30's who are hungry to win a chip. No better motivation to team them up than that. And then sign effective role players to surround them with.
And by the time Melo and CP3 are ready to call it quits (coinciding with the inevitable decline of GSW), Ingram, Zubac, and Nance will be ready to make their mark.
Sticking with DLo and Randle - two average players - will only keep the Lakers in the bottom 5 teams of the Western Conference year after year.

Thinking Cousins wouldn't succeed anywhere else just because he hasn't been to the playoffs is vastly shortsighted. If you put Cousins in a position where he can succeed, you surround him with a class winning organization that knows how to develop their people and value their people, and you surround Cousins with the right talent and another star he will respect, there's a hell of a great chance he can go deep into the playoffs. He's this generation's Rasheed Wallace. And the moment Wallace was traded to Detroit, he won a chip with players around him who were wired to be winners.

Yeah and that reason is Phil Jackson asking for a star in return. The Cavs would have to give up Love. Why give up Love, who averages 20 pts AND 10-11 rebounds a game for a player like Melo, who doesn't rebound the ball?
The Celtics would most likely have to give up Horford, Crowder, and Bradley to get Melo. Why gut 3 out of your 5 starters for Melo? Makes no sense.
If the Lakers no longer want to be patient with some of their young core, they are, on the other hand, in perfect position to offer several young assets to New York, which is going in a direction of a youth movement. This makes far better sense imo.
