It has been a foregone conclusion for months that Jeremy Lin will re-sign with the New York Knicks, but sources close to the situation say the return of the free agent point guard is not as certain as it once seemed.

While both Lin and the Knicks are hoping for a reunion, sources say that if any clubs offer Lin, a restricted free agent, a backloaded contract that pays him an eight-figure salary in the third and fourth years, the Knicks could be given pause about matching the offer.

With the new collective bargaining agreement employing a more punitive luxury tax, beginning in the 2013-14 season, the Knicks are extremely concerned about the financial ramifications of such a deal.

Toronto is perhaps the only team that might consider offering Lin a backloaded contract, known as a "poison pill" deal. The Raptors are currently going all-out to sign Steve Nash. Toronto has offered Nash a three-year deal worth $36 million, sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

But if Nash, who is also considering Phoenix, New York, Dallas and Brooklyn, rejects Toronto's offer, the Raptors may turn their attention toward Lin.

The Knicks can offer Lin a four-year deal worth $24.5 million. But an opposing team can offer Lin a poison pill that could go as high as $40 million over four years. Such a contract would pay Lin $5 million in each of the first two years and then go as high as $15 million in each of the last two years.

Matching such a contract would give the Knicks four players -- Lin, Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler -- making more than $14 million in the 2014-2015 season. Those four players alone would have a combined salary of $72 million, nearly $2 million above the luxury tax.

While it may be doubtful that a club goes as high as $15 million in a season for Lin, even if one offered Lin roughly $10 million in the third and fourth years of a contract, the Knicks would be cautious about matching, according to a source.

Toronto, Dallas and Brooklyn have all expressed interest in Lin, according to sources, though he is a backup plan for each of the clubs.

The Knicks have said they plan to let the market dictate Lin's value, so they have not offered him a contract yet. With the ability to match any offer he receives, they plan to wait and see what Lin commands as a free agent. They just hope he doesn't command too much.

^^^I've been reading since last month that the Nets are planning to do this. If they miss out on Deron, they will offer Lin that deal knowing how bad Dolan wants to keep Lin in a Knicks jersey.

It's really a win-win for the Nets if that scenario plays out. Net's know we will match and thus crippling our free agency/cap space. If we decline (not happening), Nets grab Lin and all the Lin fans along with him, which would bring in the revenue $ for the team.

Now, some people might say, "well, what if Lin stinks it up and the Nets are stuck with a huge bind?" They won't be. They can easily offer Lin and Lopez with whatever they want to try to make a play for Dwight. This would work if Lin is playing okay, but not great. But if he's stinking it up, no team would be willing to pick up that 4yr-$40 mill contract.

If this does happen though, I wouldn't match if my life depended on it. Gotta think long term. CP3 just declined (for whatever reason. Maybe more money?) and there are plenty of role players we could spend that kind of money on now and later on.

It'll certainly be an interesting 24-72 hours. Btw, I think this free agency is way more exciting than the Summer of 2010 free agency.
 
I don't think we can offer one of those backloaded contracts. So it might not be up to wether or not Dolan's willing to pay him.
 
So we're off the Lin train now? You guys go too fast for me with this back and forth, I can't keep up with how fast you turn on players.
 
He will get paid and remain a Knick. How much money he makes doesn't matter if all the contracts expire at the same time. That's what we need to try to do.

The NBA must have these backloaded contracts as another excuse for the next lock out. Because they are ridiculous. It's amazing how inept this league continues to be year after year.
 
I'm saying. I honestly think it's an anti-hype thing. When there's a lot of hype around someone or something, people try to separate themselves so they don't look like they're caught up in the hype.

I really don't get how so many Knicks fans sound like they WANT to let Lin walk. It's mind-boggling.
 
Personally, I'm a HUGE fan of what he's done for us. A 23 year old with that much potential who WANTS (Read he's turning down all endorsement deals in favor of his workouts) to get better doesn't come along often...

But Jesus, if Dolan is really willing to match a potential offer like that...so much money tied in just FOUR players. And it's not like Melo and/or Amare are gonna go to management and restructure their deals for the good of the team.
 
our salary cap is messed up already though. that's what I don't think people understand.

signing lin doesn't screw us up. We are already screwed and got lucky to get lin for free. Now you pay him.

It isnt like give lin 40 million or give 40 million to someone else. we dont have 40 million to play with. hes going to get paid. The only thing that worries me is the 4th year. But if hes good you can trade him to any market with a huge Chinese influence. namely toronto.
 
I mean, #%*+%% wanna give his spot to some cat that's never played an NBA game from some Division VII college 5 mins from the bronx. C'mon b.
 
Honestly I would be happy if we could just somehow pull Felton, Camby, and what I haven't seen in this thread yet is Brandon Bass. Still need someone to fill the void at the 2 though.
