Netflix Boss Offers Iron Fist Status, Eyes Annual Limit for Marvel Releases

The fourth of Netflix’s originally announced Marvel standalone series is inching closer to reality.

Following his Sunday appearance at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos said that the casting of Iron Fist is “in progress.”

Otherwise known as Danny Rand, the supernaturally enhanced hero wields a mystical force known as the Iron Fist, which allows him to laser-focus his chi and, for example, briefly render his fist superhumanly powerful.

Marvel’s Iron Fist is the last of Netflix’s originally announced hero series to take shape, following Daredevil (which releases Season 2 on March 18), Jessica Jones (which just scored a Season 2 pickup) and Luke Cage (starring Mike Colter). Sarandos was mum on TVLine’s report that upcoming Daredevil adversary The Punisher is due for his own spinoff.

Although a release date for Luke Cage has yet to be announced, it likely will be sometime this year, thus fulfilling what Sarandos sees as the ideal annual output for Marvel fare.

“It’s certainly possible” to release more than two in a year, he said, “but these [Marvel series] are produced on a scale of a major film. So there are long production times and long post times. And in some cases we have character crossovers, which makes it a little difficult to manage production. It’s not the goal to put out more than one or two a year.”

Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb told Adweek at TCA that following Luke Cage‘s eventual debut, Iron Fist Season 1, Jessica Jones Season 2 or the team-up series The Defenders are among the candidates to be next in queue
.

During the TCA press tour, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg was asked if there was any chance Tennant would reprise the role for season 2, and without confirming or denying, she did seem to suggest there was at least a possibility. "I mean, if you have David Tennant you want him around forever," she admitted. "He's such an extraordinary actor and one of the loveliest people you'd ever want to work with. But the show is called Jessica Jones, and it's about Jessica's arc."

When Mike Colter was asked whether Cage would wear his original threads in his solo Netflix series, Colter didn't laugh the question off as you might expect. "You know when you see something and you know they're going to do it and you cant believe its real? I'll leave it at that."

Spoke to a customer at my job by the name of Jessica Jones. Glad I work on the phones cause she would seen me fighting back some giggles thinking about Killgrave shoutin' out "JESSICAAAAAA" LOL

While attending Netflix's 2016 winter TCA press day, actor Charlie Cox revealed that the second season of Daredevil will pay homage to the first season, using a particular fight scene that amazed the fans!

"In terms of this season, there are a number of really good fights. There is one in particular that I'm really excited about because it's kind of like an homage to that scene, but it's almost like that scene on crack."

Cox spoke some more about the scene, and revealed why that was an intriguing scene for him to shoot.

"Because it was shot in one [take], when we were shooting it -- and my stunt double [Chris Brewster] did much more of it than I did -- ... everyone was so tired. There was periods of time in the fight there were moments when he was leaning against the wall. That's something people forget to do when they edit a fight scene. That's what made it so real for me. If you get in a fight, that's what it's like."

Alongside Cox was Co-star Jon Bernthal, who took the time to discuss how Punisher will change up the show's style of fighting in the second season.

"I think once you introduce a character like Frank Castle, once you introduce a character like Elektra, the stakes are raised a little bit in terms of the fighting. All of the sudden you're talking about weapons. Different questions are being brought up. I think what is the genius of Phil Silvera, the fight coordinator and stunt coordinator who choreographs these fights, is the fights are all character-driven and the fights tell a story. It's not just to look pretty or to look cool."

in case anyone wants a recap of the awesome fight scene

Its a great fight scene and got to be on top of most peoples list but I think Kickass scenes (there were several in that one film), Hellboy 2 fight in the end, SM2 train scene and X2 Nightcrawler/DoFPs Quicksilver scenes might be on top for me. There's also others whose also pretty good, the Avengers 1 sequence, V for Vendetta final fight, Bats v Bane and Supes v Metropolis Zod were all great too.
