Hollins named December's Western Conference Coach of the Month
Grizzlies post best December record in franchise history after 1-8 start.

MEMPHIS, Jan. 4, 2010-Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach Lionel Hollins was named the NBA's Western Conference Coach of the Month (December) for the first time in his career, the NBA announced today.

Hollins led the Grizzlies to a 9-4 record in the month (second only to the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, 12-3, .800), marking the highest winning percentage ever in the month of December (.692) and the sixth-best record in the franchise's 15-year history for any month. Eight of the 13 games were against opponents with a winning record, including three victories against division leaders (Dec. 4 vs. Dallas, Dec. 8 vs. Cleveland and Dec. 20 vs. Denver).

The 21-year coaching veteran has helped the NBA's youngest team overcome a 1-8 start, guiding the Grizzlies to a 15-8 (.652) record over their last 23 games. The Grizzlies are on pace to win 41 games in 2009-10, which would be a 17-game improvement over last season's campaign (24-58). Under Hollins' guidance, the Grizzlies set monthly franchise records in December for rebounding (45.5), breaking the old record (44.0) set in February 1998. Memphis also scored 106.8 points per game in the month, the third-best monthly offensive output in club history.

The 11th head coach in Grizzlies history has the club ranked No. 1 in several key team statistical categories, including points in the paint (52.

, offensive rebounding (13.

, rebounding margin (+5.4) and second-chance points (16.2). Hollins also has the team ranked third in rebounding (44.1) and sixth in field goal percentage with a franchise-best .480 clip.

Hollins joins Hubie Brown (February 2004, March 2004) and Mike Fratello (January 2005, April 2006) as the only coaches in franchise history to win the award. The Grizzlies (16-16), who have won six of their last seven games, will try to climb above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2005-06 season when they play Portland at 9 p.m. CT tomorrow night at the Rose Garden in Portland.
Congrats to Coach Hollins.

Guess he isn't a dumb %$+ coach after all

I got to give him credit. The players trust him and he worked with zbo all summer. He didn't want iverson here and he didn't play him, so he could getout of town. He doesn't get ran over either. I know I wanted him fired because the team wasn't playing up to their potential. memphis have the 4th bestrecord in the west after their 1-8 start too. Its time to bring that nba prediction thread back.

It's not so much Coach hollins as its ZBO+Juice+mike+Rudy+Marc all playing in unison together. When you watch the grizzlies now, they truly look like acohesive unit on the offensive end and that seems to spark them on the other end of the floor as well. Well...Maybe that has something to do with Lionel butnone of the less, its good to see the the grizzlies in a position to contend in the rigid western coference.

Grizzlies looking for deal if the price right

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Earning a postseason berth hasn't been one of the Grizzlies' stated goals for this season.

But privately, they have made appearing in the playoffs a mission.

To that end, the Grizzlies' effort to improve the team's depth is ongoing. Memphis has three first-round picks in the 2010 NBA draft and is peddling its two late-round selections in an attempt to add scoring off the bench.

The Griz will not take a player whose deal extends beyond this season if they indeed consummate a deal. Although they are willing to trade draft picks because of the team's youth, the Griz are not offering their own 2010 selection.

Memphis' first-round picks that are owed from Denver and the Los Angeles Lakers are in play.

The process began earlier this season when the Grizzlies approached tonight's opponent, the Portland Trail Blazers, about a potential trade involving forward Travis Outlaw.

According to league sources, the Blazers weren't interested in swapping Outlaw merely for draft picks so the deal quickly fizzled. It was the second time since last season that the Griz expressed interest in Outlaw, who is out another two months while recovering from a broken bone in his left foot.

Outlaw is one of several injured players expected to sit out the Grizzlies' final road game against the Blazers. Centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla are done for the season. Forwards Nicolas Batum and Rudy Fernandez aren't expected back until late January while LaMarcus Aldridge will sit out this week with an ankle sprain.

The Grizzlies are healthy but fear that an injury can derail what has become a promising season partly because of their lack of depth.

Since their failed bid to acquire Outlaw, the Griz whiffed at signing free-agent guard Von Wafer. The former Houston Rocket reached a buyout with a Greek team last month but then failed his physical with the Grizzlies.

That development led Memphis to negotiations with the New York Knicks about maligned guard Nate Robinson. Team insiders confirmed a recent New York Newsday report that the Griz and Knicks agreed in principle to exchange Robinson for guard Marcus Williams and a draft pick.

The deal died because of Robinson's veto. Robinson is in the last year of a qualifying offer with the Knicks therefore he has to approve any trade, according to league rules.

Griz general manager Chris Wallace wouldn't confirm or deny any trade discussions. Wallace would only say that the Griz are active and will remain so until the league's February trade deadline.

"We would like to add to our offensive firepower off the bench but we want to do so on our terms," Wallace said. "We don't want to complicate our long-term team salary obligations and potentially detract from our ability to sign Rudy Gay."

Gay turned down a multi-year contract extension starting at $10 million. He will be a restricted free agent this summer. The Griz are also planning for free agency involving Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph in 2011, and future contract extensions for Mike Conley and O.J. Mayo.
Wouldn't have minded seeing Outlaw in Memphis.

stays putting up numbers

Blazers did a horrible job closing out the game, and that call on Roy with 30 secs left was sketchy.
Let these dudes play.

GG though, Z-Bo killed it.

These next two games against Utah in a home/home are huge.

Memphis is only a .5 game back from them. They need to at least win one of those, but it would be great for them to win both (which is asking for a little toomuch).

Not in the least bit. We've been playing very well as of late and ZBO is on a phenomonal run right now. If him and OJ can bring it like they did tonight, then yea they could sweep this home and home. None of the less, good win tonight, and excellent D by OJ down the stretch against Brandon Roy.

Im Juiced

I was out ballin, so i missed the second half, but I was pretty pumped to come home and see that they took this %%!.
I hope we see OJ on DWill, and perhaps a back and forth offensive display.

I won't be able to catch the game live tomorrow, but I'm just gonna chill on Friday and watch the home game against Utah.
The Grizz are definitely doing it.

News for tonight's game @ Utah:

- Tinsley will be out due to personal matters.

- Deron Williams is questionable with a sore wrist.

- Randolph will play; had a small bruise on his knee after the bump he got in the Blazers game

Tough game tonight. Memphis doesn't do well in Utah, but they're playing their best bball right now. Utah is playing some of the worse bball. Memphisis on a back-to-back as well.
