Grizzlies near breaking point?
Since dropping Allen Iverson, the Grizzlies have arguably been the most surprising team of the year, as they're now 17-17 after starting out the season 3-8.
But their entire starting lineup is nursing injuries. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, O.J. Mayo has a sore hip, Mike Conley has a tender right shoulder, Rudy Gay is still feeling the affects of a sprained right ankle, Marc Gasol has a bruised right elbow and Zach Randolph has a sore right knee.
None of them are expected to miss any time, but if any conditions worsen, the Grizzlies might become shorthanded.
And as ESPN's John Hollinger noted in his chat today, if any one of their top four goes down, it could be tough to eek out the last playoff spot in the West.
"I've heard talk of Memphis dealing one or two first rounders (L.A.'s or Denver's, not their own) to get a player to help. But they don't want anyone with a contract past this year. That's pure silliness if they go down the road of dealing a first-round pick for an expiring, especially since they're still going to need some good fortune to crack the top eight in the West -- remember, they're basically counting on four guys (Gasol, Randolph, Gay, Mayo) to stay healthy for 80-plus games to have much of a shot."
And Conley isn't? If you're talking about Conley and his numbers, then that's not the problem. People need to realize that the offenseMemphis runs is not the triangle, but similar in terms of ball movement. A guy like Conley isn't going to rack up a bunch of assists in the type of offenseMemphis runs. He's fine with what he's doing.Originally Posted by hypebeast21

After an unbelievable road trip, that unfortunately ended in a predictable Jazz beat down, the Griz are right in the thick of this thing......
as of 1/7
Seed - Team (games ahead 8th Spot)
6th - Portland (2)
7th - Houston (0.5)
8th - OKC (0)
-------------------------
Seed - Team (games behind 8th Spot)
9th - Utah (0)
10th - New Orleans (1)
11th - Memphis (1.5)
12th - L.A. Clippers (2.5)
Notes:
--Out of the teams listed above, the Griz and Hornets have the best record in the last 10 games (7-3)
--Hollinger has the Griz with 38.8% chance of making the playoffs, the highest probability so far this season
Strength of Schedule (rank)
Houston - 1st
New Orleans - 4th
OKC - 5th
Utah - 10th
Memphis - 15th
LA Clippers - 16th
Portland - 21st
Keep These Things In Mind
--The Griz had one of the most successful road trips in the last 3 seasons and are consistently winning games they are underdogs in
--The Jazz are the kryptonite to the Griz
--Kevin Durant is awesome
--The basketball gods have figured out Portland deserves to be punished
--Houston is playing good in quarters 1 thru 3, and consistently falling apart in the 4th quarter (which is what happens to teams full of role players...we know that better than anyone), they are on a 3 game losing streak (New Orleans, Lakers, Suns)
--In contrast, Chris Paul has been playing great and getting all the calls in the 4th quarter of games lately and will likely keep carrying his pathetic team with the help of sympathetic refs
Looking Ahead
--Griz vs Jazz on 1/8
--Griz vs Clips on 1/12
--Griz having 8 of next 12 at home the rest of January
--Rockets have 9 of 11 at home the rest of January
--Portland vs Lakers and Cavs the 8th and 10th
--Portland finishes the month of Jan playing 6 of 8 on the road (and hopefully with more injuries)
--New Orleans has 9 of 14 games this month on the road
That's basically a good breakdown for the rest of the month. Memphis definitely has a favorable schedule to insert themselves into that 6th, 7th or 8thspot by the end of January.
"Consider this deal: Orlando uses its massive trade exception from the Hedo Turkoglu trade, adding Mike Miller, Dominic McGuire and DeShawn Stevenson (with the exception) from Washington, while sending J.J. Redick to Washington and Mickael Pietrus to Memphis. The trade would shore up the Magic's shooting and also clean up next year's balance sheet a bit. If Orlando doesn't like that one, several potential variants work. For instance, Wizards center Brendan Haywood could go to the Magic while Redick stays in Orlando ... or the Magic could add Haywood, send Redick and Anthony Johnson to Memphis and hang on to Pietrus ... or the Magic could acquire Butler instead of Miller ... or the Magic could obtain Jamison instead of Miller and send either Brandon Bass or Marcin Gortat (with his consent, which presumably he'd give) back to Washington. In any case, a three-way deal with Orlando and Memphis is the obvious escape hatch for the Wizards' predicament ... At the end, the Wizards will have wiped away $9 million in tax obligations, even before we get into any of the particulars with Arenas."
Pietrus would help immensely but I don't think Memphis wants his contract. Got to save up for Gay's impending free agency.
Redick's shooting would be welcomed too.
"The Heat can offer anyone the $951,066 he'll have left on his contract on trade-deadline day to take Wright off their hands, likely adding a sweetener for the trouble (for instance, either more cash or one of the two second-round picks they got from the Hornets on draft day last year). Any number of teams could pull off such a deal, with the prime suspects being the Clippers (a $3.3 million trade exception from the Zach Randolph deal and an owner who loves to make a buck) and the Grizzlies. The added benefit of such a deal for Miami is a $2.8 million trade exception that they would carry into next year's trading season, giving the Heat an added means of loading up the roster following their expected free-agent splurge this summer."
Wouldn't mind Wright, he's a solid defender and decent mid-range shooter. Just had a short leash and injury prone.
In any case, a three-way deal with Orlando and Memphis is the obvious escape hatch for the Wizards' predicament. But Memphis (or Sacramento) must be involved, since all the avenues above require using nearly all of the Grizzlies' or Kings' $4.2 million in remaining cap space. The best arrangement I come up with has Washington sending Randy Foye and Javaris Crittenton to Memphis and the Grizzlies sending Hamed Haddadi and Steven Hunter to Washington to complete the deal.
@ Critt possibly coming back. He better leave his heat inD.C.
Foye would be a nice addition as well.
