I don't think Christian Slater expected to be back for season two when he started either.
I think I read somewhere that the plan was to use him for season one. Set the tone for the rest of the story, then he'd be out. He's just too good in this, though.
Joey Badass and Craig Robinson added to the cast, too. Really unorthodox. Can't wait to see how a rapper and a comedic actor take on these roles. I love seeing actors step out of their comfort zone.

That's partly why I expected him to be out.
Same with Sean Bean in season one of Thrones. Figured he was too big a name for a brand new show to be able to continue to pay him.
