[[ NEW YORK METS 2009 OFFSEASON POST: Beltran ahead of schedule ]]

Parnell should be the 8th inning guy from now on. Putz has to chillax for a little. its just a bad loss relax, mets are on a hot streak right now. We'regonna win the next 3 games with johan and pelf next 2. i like Fmart and i cant wait till reyes hopefully by friday and beltran get back .

Mets go Lets!

Gotta give the Mets some credit for grinding it out with all the injuries, but it seems like the depleted lineup is catching up now. Top of the order nothitting now for two games (even though last night should have been a win), they can't seem to take advantage of the opportunities when they get them. Omarhas to seriously consider another bat by the deadline, whether it's someone to play first or a corner outfield spot.

Its not easy when 3 of your 4 core players are out, and David struggling. Sheff can't even rest his hamstring since Tron is out.

I heard something about Beltran possibly having swine flu, Maine as well. Apparently someone in the SNY crew had it.

Doubt its swine flu because those symptoms are relatively mild compared to a normal flu, its pretty much just that stomach virus that's been going aroundlately. We are just going to have to hope Pelf wins tonight because this there isn't much we can expect from this offense right now with all of these guysout.....they just have to be thankful all of this has coincided with a weak schedule. Reyes and Tron should be back by the weekend, the Nats are far far worsethan the Pirates.

In other news, Brad Holt has been promoted from single A to AA. He had a shaky first outing in A-ball but he dominated his last 7 starts. I think Omar has theguy on a fast track to the majors, he's a guy with more potential than Neise in my opinion.

Omar needs to trade Putz. He's the only player that can really bring something good back that won't mortgage our future.

Considering only K-Rod, Parnell, and Stokes are the 3 best arms (with Feliciano being a good lefty specialist), I can't see them getting rid of Putz toweaken the pen depth. Maybe if Shawn Green were pitching well it'd be a different story, but you can't can't weaken the pen right now.

Mets NEED Putz to get back on track.

Rain out today is a good thing, Reyes suffered a setback though some problem with his hamstring, so much for that.

After the Nats it won't get easy with this lineup, Mets went from 1.5 games up to 3 games back in a hurry.

Nice to see Green pitching better lately, Putz is throwing 90-91mph i don't know how much more evidence the Mets need to further look into a possibleinjury...he threw 97 in the WBC.

Nice to see Beltran back in the lineup and pick up right where he left off, Pelf just didn't have ANYTHING today. Mets have had some tough luck playing @PIT these last few years.

Following today's 11-6 loss to the Pirates, Carlos Beltran said:
"The reality is, coming here to Pittsburgh and getting swept, for me, I feel embarrassed… We need to find a way to play better and to focus more on what we need to accomplish… I mean, we have to take this personally. It can't happen… I know the Pirates are a big-league team, but we're better than them. We're better than them, and we know we're better than them. But, we have to do something about it. McLouth wasn't here and they still came out and scored 11 runs. 11 runs? We have to play better."

Nice to see that.

But in BAD news.....WFAN stated that Reyes has a minor tear in his HAMSTRING. I wish they could tell us how minor it is (grade 1 being slight, grade 3 beingworse), but you know the Mets medical staff, and Jerry will state the usual "he'll be fine in a week".

i'm like about to cry lol, i cant believe both delgado and reyes are out for redic. long.

they have to get someone with power imo and quick, we'll see

I doubt people will agree with me, but say Reyes injury is worse than we think and hes out for the season (same with Gado)....

.....Cora with his thumb, Church out, Sheff with a bad hammy, Pagan out, Beltran's sore knee (although he's playing through it), Putz OBVIOUSLY HURTwith his low velocity, Delgado/Reyes out, Oliver Perez on the DL.......

.....I wouldn't be completely against being sellers this season. Why trade our good young prospects like Parnell, Fernando Martinez, Brad Holt, Neise,etc.....for a QUICK FIX this season when there are so many holes right now with these injuries. I wouldn't mind getting rid of any of the older guys tocontending teams and stock up for next season. Get a new GM as well (not all Omar's fault) and a new manager, just get something new going.

If this team were healthy they would be one of the top 4 teams in the National League, easily. But at this point I wouldn't trade any young guys for aquick fix, won't solve anything.

You keep Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, K-Rod, Parnell, Fernando Martinez, and all the prospects in A/AA in tact.

Injures getting out of hand quick. The week I was in Vegas we go 5-1, and now this crap when I return? Need to do work this weekend.

yea mez i have a feeling reyes and gado will be out for season, putz will be out soon also i feel but parnell is nasty. i dont think we should give up on thisseason. its really redic that we can't make playoffs with this team. we have so much talent i dont get it. i think its like a curse

I agree 100%

But my question is, is this even possible (being sellers) ? Being in NY, and the first season of the new park?

I doubt it would happen because that would mean empty seats at a new stadium, not a good look.

I personally would though, they say Reyes may miss up to 6 weeks....in mets terms that means 12 weeks + rehab...I'm going to assume out till September.

I'm not relying on Delgado at this point either, he is older and who knows how long rehab would take him. Its his last season with the Mets anyways, justmore payroll off the books (12M), and Wagner is off the books as well (out for the year also).

I guarantee that the Nats win 2/3 this weekend.

Nah, maybe win today because Redding has done nothing so far, but thats as far as it goes.

i dont think we should give up on this season. its really redic that we can't make playoffs with this team. we have so much talent i dont get it. i think its like a curse

The Mets were playing good baseball then it all went downhill in PITT, you can't expect these bench players to put up a ton of runs consistently. Evenyesterday with Pelf having NOTHING, the Mets came back two times, got it to 5-4. then the Pirates put up another 4 spot and it was over.

I still think the Mets will make ONE move to get either a 1st baseman or corner outfielder just to make some sort of push, because they still have a chance ata playoff spot......but everyone of us will have to lower our expectations at this point. Our starting pitching will have to carry us often since runs will behard to come by, David is already not getting ANYTHING to hit. Murphy looks tentative out there and is pressing, also doesn't help that Jerry has treatedhim and Church like a couple of minor leaguers when they were both hitting .400, no coincidence both are struggling now.

Redding gets rocked again tonight I want to see Niese up here. Yea I know we'll be rushing him, but what do we have to lose at this point? Give Niese acouple of starts and see where he goes from there.

The only problem with us being sellers is who can we sell that won't hurt us and bring any value?

Sheffield
Castillo?
Putz
Church?

That's pretty much it. There's not much to sell. I'd rather buy, but buy smartly. No way in hell I want to see another Victor Zambrano trade.

I have no problem trading Fernando Martinez for Holliday IF he signs an extension. It won't be a terrible move imo. You get a very good hitter in his primeand will be there for the next 7 years in exchange for a 20 year old that could be a beast, but has been hurt a couple of times at the minor league level.

True, I was about to bring up that point, who would we sell? (Mets won't sell anyways but just for arguement's sake)

- Delgado is hurt way beyond the trading deadline.

- Schneider only has 1 year left on his contract, a contender could use him as a backup.

- Putz is hurt but still has a lot of value, Church is another servicable outfielder a team could use. Sheffield yes.

-C astillo is stuck here, Cora is a great veteran backup who can contribute on any contender.

So pretty much Schneider, Sheffield, Church, Putz, and Cora........you won't get much but its better than nothing.

I agree with buying ONLY if they buy smart. Don't trade any prospects if possible (maybe single A guys), there are lots of cheap teams who want to unloadguys with contracts they no longer wish to pay, Mets could easily take the bulk of the contract assuming its nothing long term.

For arguements sake:
