NT, convince me "cutting the cord" is a good idea

Finally think I've found a use for my old Macbook. Gonna set it up as a my home/remote media server. load Kodi on it and off I go!

Anyone use a Macbook too for this or foresee any issues?
thats what i did but instead used an old desktop pc.... just added a bigger hd, more ram etc.... It truly is the best way seeing that it hardware etc is better then a chromebox, firetv etc....

This. My PC is actually mid to high end so pretty much all I did was cop one of those 30' ft HDMI cords off Amazon for like $10 and run it to my TV.

Im not much of a TV watcher, but having access to everything definitely helps.

i just have mines setup along with my entertainment system... like have my ps4 my router and my desktop pc....same way ppl have the set up with like a cable box except i just have a pc there instead...

And as far as remotes i just use my 6+ because xbmc has a remote control app that is faaaaaaaaaaaaaar better then any remote because it displays all the options etc whereas your traditional remote you gotta figure and etc buttons for like menus back/forth so on and so forth, plus you can control the volume etc all thru the app including sleep/power on/off........

What's a proper internet speed I should be looking for if I want to stream sports/movies?

What exactly are the steps on getting Kodi on the Chromebox? Can you just turn it on and select an option to install Openelec? I don't understand. If it's anything like the Chromebook, then it's going to be a pain. I tried installing Ubuntu with xbmc on Chromebook using various versions and they all had one problem or another making it unuseable. If Chromebox were a simple plug and play solution, I'd buy that schit right now.

Other thing, why does Kodi have so much buffering issues on HD streams? What are the speed requirements for it to run flawlessly? I'm on a 15Mbps connection on wifi. I have no problems with SD, just HD. Amazon, Netflix or any other HD streaming sites only use up to about 3Mbps at 1080p, so what's the deal with Kodi?
Lots of variables on why you are buffering....hardware, software, network....don't blame kodi.  I'm running Kodi on the Chromebox and HD streams load in 5sec, with no buffering.  Check my previous post where I posted a youtube of my setup. I'm still rockin it on the daily

Since the new Internet Standard is now 25mb....I would say atleast that.  Also you have to consider your source.  If you're talking the major release sites Netflix, Hulu, Amazon...then you should not buffer AT ALL.  If you're talking the seedy repositories...Icefilms, 1channel, Mega, Movieshare, etc.....Its on their backbone.

You say that but a bunch of people and myself are having buffering issues. Do a search and it's everywhere related to xbmc. None of the pay sites or even free ones have buffering issues. My hardware/network is good. I hit 15mbps 14ms ping.

I rarely have buffering issues but clearing the cache usually clears up my buffering issues right away.

I'm coming in late on this but what type of buffering issue are you having and what addons are you using for your stream service. Only unbearable buffering issue I come across is on sport devil.

Jail Broken Iphone, Apple TV 3rd gen., Movie Box, NFL Game Pass, NBA Gametime, KODI>>USATV plugin if i get the itch to ever watch live tv if dont.. Also, hulu and netflix streaming.. all bases covered for 16 dollars a month.

I pretty much only watch Genesis. Every damn time I try to load an HD stream, it's just there 1%, 2% and so forth and it goes slowly to the point it just says "cach fully loaded" or something and plays but then gets buffered shortly after the filled cache plays out.

Movie box is too unreliable for me so I usually spend most of my time on the genesis and 1channel plugins. And thanks to my college fraternity I've got fios Mobile for 80+ live HD channels, HBOgo, Cinemax go, showtime anytime, and Netflix at no cost to me.

I'm also running the tvaddons edition that comes preloaded with everything you need as far as movies and shows are concerned.

How do you get the free US network channels on live stream? I'm looking up ustv and it says something about account login. It's a pay service?

I have that problem on a few movies using Genesis and Cartoon HD. Have you tried cleaning your cache when it happens? I been meaning to buy another 2gb stick of memory for that problem.

How do you do that? I've the Xunity tool but that fails. I try clearing the cache within Genesis' tools. Doesn't seem to work. What else is there?

You register for an account on ustv for free and get some basic channels they offer.

If you pay the $19 a month you get more channels, check their website.

I got it set up but how do I get a program guide of live streams like jdfrenchbread23's screen shots? The way mine is set up, it's all pre-recorded stuff.
Alright I messed up. I signed up on ustv vod. So I just installed ustvnow with the credentials I created but whether I click Live or Recordings, it's empty.
I think the screenshots are because he's using ftv guide. I'm not sure why the live or recordings are empty tho, because I've never used USTVNow.

I just use the Phoenix addon to catch live tv, but sometimes the channels are down.
Alright who got a link on how to set up Kodi for dummies

I have a Mac, iPhone 6, and AppleTV
Kodi is only available on a jailbroken apple tv 2.

You can put it on your mac: http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install_Kodi_for_Mac
