NT: Official Personal Finances Thread

Do guys know if Barclays allows you to open multiple or sub accounts? I'd like to have everything in one place but have multiple accounts for emergency, wedding, etc. I believe Ally does but I was interested in Barclays online savings and dream account.

Thanks.

Yes Barclays allows you to open multiple accounts

This might be stupid question.......
Does Mint make you obsess over spending?? I think im really going to quit buying sneakers, I have enough......I have 2 pairs of kicks coming in this week but like I told a buddy, I am done after this.

How often do you guys go out to eat with your lady or yourself? I guess you just set a budget for entertainment and dining and stick to it......sounds easy but things are always going on. I just hope you guys enjoy life thats all.

I didn't need Mint to tell me to stop wasting money on sneakers I'd never wear lol. I don't obsess over spending, but I like to track where my money is actually going at the end of the month and reallocate my budget. If I see I don't need to pay x amount for electricity or groceries this month, I'll take the extra and bump up my budget for something else.

My budget consists of rent, bills, living/work expenses, entertainment, dining out, personal saving, emergency fund, and investments. Any expense that I don't budget for (like a plane ticket, gadgets, citations etc) come from out of my personal savings.

If I'm eating out it's probably twice a week at most, but more than likely once every other week. Same thing with drinks. I don't need to be at a bar every weekend to enjoy life.

Just because you budget doesn't mean you aren't enjoying life lol. Don't understand where this mindset comes from.

Not you relax I wasn't aiming at anyone in particular.

In real life I know real cheap people, like my best friend from my state he isn't hurting at all. I'm like damn bro enjoy life just a lil more......

He like refuses to until he is a CEO lol

My thing is 100% moderation

Me and my girl go out to eat maybe twice a month and then go to an event (Broadway show, nba game, concert, etc) maybe once every couple of months. That was for the last year or so while we were saving for our place but I can see it staying that way to be honest. We didn't miss anything or feel like we weren't living life by staying in.

Other people go out every weekend and go to the club but dont have much to show for it after. But whatever you like to do or whatever makes you happy thats what you should decide to budget for. But if someone finds themselves not being able to afford or save for things they want then they need to find out whats really important in life.

Of course not me lol. I just said that because anytime you bring up a budget you say that people aren't living enough and enjoying life.

If someone had a budget of spending $1500/mo on shoes or whatever their obsession is, are they not enjoying life?

Everyone has different priorities and their budget aligns with what works for their income and what they feel is most important to them.

Random, how much was that goyard duffle Al lol

Still need to make a trip to NY or MIA to pick up some goyard.

It's just like looking in a mirror. You now know what the truth is and while you might not like the result, it's up to you to do the best with it. Bottom line, many people people want to go through life with their head down being clueless.

The mindset comes from the belief that you have to spend money in order to enjoy it. That fallacy encourages people to continuously live beyond their means. I was raised that way, and it can still be a struggle for me to remain firm on my budgeting.

People think "I worked hard for this money, so I can use it on whatever I want!" instead of "I worked hard for this money, so I shouldn't squander it."

I think it's more related to how people enjoy life. My enjoyment may just be cheaper than another's, but people don't always get that lol.

i.e. I'll hoop with my boys for 2-3 hours Saturday afternoon and then head with them to BWW later for food and drinks. Probably spending no more than $20 and I enjoyed half the day with friends.

Whereas someone else may have spent $60 at a gun range and then chilled at home with their family. We're both doing what we want, just at different prices.

I'm not against debt, I just paid off bad debt that wasn't helping me. I believe in enjoying life an I also believe in "opporunity cost" which I'm sure every single person involved in this thread knows.

For that reason alone it's why I have a lot of respect for entrepreneurs.

I was interested in the P2P lending, either through Prosper or Lending club. But after doing a little homework on them, I found out that because I live in Maryland I'm not eligible to sign up. I'm wondering has anyone in Maryland (or Ohio -- the other state P2P lending is not allowed) disregarded and invested with them anyway?

Cutting up credit cards was the sure way. Anyone cancelled their old c.c.? Will less c.c. help?

I always cancel my credit cards if I'm not using them. The hassle of a potential identity theft far outweighs the possible benefit of a couple points added to my score.

Anyone here have a carecredit card? You know the card that's geared towards health/vision/dental, etc.exams. Anyone put that to good use?

I opened up a care credit account to help pay for extra invisalign trays. Got approved for like $2k. Only charged like $600 to it and paid it off asap

Cool. Basically the same situation with the same limit. Bu I was charged like $700 for some dental work and I recently paid it off as well.

Great point.  I plan on keeping just a couple for convenience.  Definitely learned my lesson.

Do you know if it negatively affects you or whatever?  Thanks.

Closing them can affect your score because of your length of credit history as well as your debt to credit ratio.

I haven't seen any. Just pulled my score today and it's actually up 20 points from last year. Then again, I have an overdraft line of credit and a mortgage too but I think my oldest open line is only about 7 years old including my credit card. My student loans will be dropping off next year, so we'll see what that does. Not worried either way since I don't plan on borrowing anything else anytime soon after this refinance.
