Amare only looking for contender?
12:19PM ET
[h5]Amare Stoudemire | Suns | Interested: Wizards?, Spurs?, Nets?, Heat?, Bulls? [/h5]
[h5]Possible Stoudemire destinations[/h5]
- Philadelphia. The Sixers could send Andre Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert in return. According to ESPN's Chad Ford, the Suns are most intrigued by this offer.
- New Jersey. They'll be in Brooklyn in a few years, and can offer young talent and draft picks.
- Miami. Stoudemire has a place in the area, and has the opportunity to play with Dwyane Wade. The Heat could send back Michael Beasley or Jermaine O'Neal.
- Chicago. The Bulls are looking for a power forward who can score. They play in a big market and have cap space to re-sign Stoudemire. Local media says the Bulls have reservations about signing him, but a package of Tyrus Thomas and possibly Brad Miller or Kirk Hinrich is in the mix.
- San Antonio. Seems unlikely, but reports say they are mulling it over. The Spurs could send Manu Ginobili's expiring contract in return.
- New York. It's a big market and Mike D'Antoni is familiar with Stoudemire, but Donnie Walsh doesn't see it happening.
- Washington. With the Wizards being in sell mode, the Suns could receive Antawn Jamison in return, a stretch 4 who would work well in their system.
- Cleveland. The Cavs could send Zydrunas Ilgauskas and J.J. Hickson in return, and Cleveland would net a frontcourt scorer in Stoudemire. But would a Shaq reunion work?
- Golden State. The Warriors were linked to Stoudemire on draft day. But the team is in saving money mode now. If they were to put their chips in, the team could offer an expiring contract along with young talent such as Anthony Morrow, Anthony Randolph or Stephen Curry.
- Detroit. The Pistons could offer a young talent in Charlie Villanueva along with expiring contracts in Chris Wilcox and Kwame Brown. But with ownership changing hands and the team already having a few long-term deals in place, it isn't very likely.
This Amare Stoudemire trade situation seems to add a new thread every day.
Here's what we know now.
As we told you yesterday, Stoudemire publicly stated that he's leaning towards opting in on the last year of his contract. Some thought this meant he'd be staying in Phoenix, but as ESPN's Chad Ford wrote today, that's not quite the case.
Yes, the Suns are still expected to offer him a contract extension soon. Yes, he could still very well opt in, re-sign and be a member of the Suns for the years to come.
But the Suns are still looking at trade options as well.
Part of Stoudemire coming out and saying he's leaning towards opting in on the last year of his contract is a bit of a power play: according to Ford, the Sixers are hot after him and are offering Andre Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert. So from the Sixers end, if Stoudemire opts out next season, they clear a ton of money off their books with Iggy and Dalembert gone, and Stoudemire's contact gone.
But by saying he may opt in, that means teams can't just look at Stoudemire's contract as an expiring one this season, they have to look at it as $17.6 million added to their payroll next season if they swing a trade for him. That's quite the opposite end of the spectrum.
As Ford also notes today, Stoudemire talked about opting in because he wants to go to a contender, wants a team that will re-sign him and that will be competitive. If weak teams use him as a salary dump, he doesn't seem as amicable to that.
[h5]Chad Ford[/h5]
Stoudemire wants a winner, whether it's the Suns or not
"Stoudemire wants a commitment from owner Robert Sarver that the Suns will continue to spend to get back into contention. Stoudemire doesn't want to commit to a team that's going to be in the lottery in future years. So unless the Suns blow Stoudemire away with their offer, they'll reach an agreement only if he is persuaded that the Suns are committed to further spending .... there's a reason Stoudemire went public about optin in: He wants some control over where he might be traded to. Philly -- a struggling team that sees Stoudemire as more an asset with a potentially expiring contract than as a cornerstone -- would likely be less interested if Stoudemire were planning to play out his contract. Therefore, when Stoudemire heard about the possible trade with the 76ers, he expressed his reservations about being traded to Philadelphia by going public with his musings about staying with his contract. In other words, he's sending a warning to teams that might see him as nothing more than an expiring contract. That aside, it seems likely Stoudemire will exercise his option to terminate his contract. If he doesn't, he's betting that he can (A) stay healthy and (B) fare well under the next collective bargaining agreement, which might be the rules of the game that shape Stoudemire's next contract if he doesn't exercise his option this year. Given his injury history and the determination of the owners to tighten up the next CBA, that's a huge risk."
"The biggest complicating factor is that Amare wants a max extension, and with the cap expected to shrink next summer, and a potential lockout looming for 2011, there aren't a lot of teams anxious to tie up what could amount to 30-40 percent of their salary cap for a half-decade on a guy with his injury history."
"It sounds as if the Sixers are very motivated to make a deal that gives them salary relief right now. They've been dangling Iguodala, once the cornerstone of the franchise, to any team willing to take Samuel Dalembert, too. Cleveland, Dallas and Houston have been mentioned as possible suitors. While Iguodala might be a little overpaid (and Dalembert is way overpaid), both players could help a team. Given that, I have to believe Philadelphia is going to find a way to make this happen."

[h5]Michael Beasley | Heat [/h5]
Last season Michael Beasley refused to wear protective knee pads or braces because he "didn't want to look Patrick Ewing."
Unfortunately for Beasley, he had to start wearing a knee brace Wednesday to protect his right knee, which he hyperextended recently.
"Now, I look just like Ewing," Beasley told The Miami Herald yesterday. "It's tough not to think about it when you've got a big, like, cast on your leg. It's going to take time to get used to."

To be fair, Kidd is a better shooter now than prolly any point in his career.Originally Posted by Im Not You

He is, but still not good enough to shoot a team out of a zone for 48 minutes.Originally Posted by airmaxpenny1

All I'm saying is I think Iggy at least makes them a contender in the west. And Dirk himself can shoot enough for the whole squad. I don't think it would make them better than the Lakers or the Nuggets, but at least be able to play with them.Originally Posted by bhzmafia14

The only thing people have to do is close out on him. He's a good spot up shooter, that's it.
They've been 2-3 in the West all year. If Iggy doesn't make them better than either of those teams then what's the point?Originally Posted by airmaxpenny1

DALLAS -- The NBA All-Star Game at Cowboys Stadium will shatter the attendance record for a basketball game as the league said a crowd of more than 90,000 is expected.
But whether it will reach the grand goal of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is the question.
Mike Bass, the NBA's senior vice president of marketing, said a crowd of more than 90,000 is expected for the Feb. 14 game. That would shatter the record for attendance at a basketball game, which was set when a crowd of 78,129 watched Michigan State play Kentucky at Detroit's Ford Field on Dec. 13, 2003.
Jones, who partnered with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to bring the All-Star Game to North Texas, has a little higher goal. He is determined for the crowd to reach six figures.
"Well, we want to push the magical number and we think we have an opportunity here," Jones said before the Dec. 19 Texas-North Carolina college game, which served as a test run for the All-Star Game. "We're well along the way right now: one-double-0."
The record crowd for an All-Star Game is 44,735, set at the Houston Astrodome in 1989.
A crowd of 105,121 attended the Cowboys' first regular-season game in the $1.2 billion stadium, which features 60-yard-long high-definition screens that will be directly over the basketball court. That six-figure crowd drew concern from the Arlington fire marshals and public safety officials, prompting the Cowboys to limit the number of standing-room-only tickets sold in later games.
However, the setup for basketball features thousands of seats where the football field is for Cowboys games.
"If the NBA will let it go to 95," Cuban said, "there's no reason why it can't go to 100."
Tim MacMahon covers the Mavericks for ESPN Dallas. You can follow him on Twitter or leave a question for his weekly mailbag.
And the NBA doesnt get it when it comes to the All-Star game..............................
