Amare only looking for contender?
12:19PM ET

[h5]Amare Stoudemire | Suns | Interested: Wizards?, Spurs?, Nets?, Heat?, Bulls? [/h5]

[h5]Possible Stoudemire destinations[/h5]
 • Philadelphia. The Sixers could send Andre Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert in return. According to ESPN's Chad Ford, the Suns are most intrigued by this offer.
 • New Jersey. They'll be in Brooklyn in a few years, and can offer young talent and draft picks.
 • Miami. Stoudemire has a place in the area, and has the opportunity to play with Dwyane Wade. The Heat could send back Michael Beasley or Jermaine O'Neal.
 • Chicago. The Bulls are looking for a power forward who can score. They play in a big market and have cap space to re-sign Stoudemire. Local media says the Bulls have reservations about signing him, but a package of Tyrus Thomas and possibly Brad Miller or Kirk Hinrich is in the mix.
 • San Antonio. Seems unlikely, but reports say they are mulling it over. The Spurs could send Manu Ginobili's expiring contract in return.
 • New York. It's a big market and Mike D'Antoni is familiar with Stoudemire, but Donnie Walsh doesn't see it happening.
 • Washington. With the Wizards being in sell mode, the Suns could receive Antawn Jamison in return, a stretch 4 who would work well in their system.
 • Cleveland. The Cavs could send Zydrunas Ilgauskas and J.J. Hickson in return, and Cleveland would net a frontcourt scorer in Stoudemire. But would a Shaq reunion work?
 • Golden State. The Warriors were linked to Stoudemire on draft day. But the team is in saving money mode now. If they were to put their chips in, the team could offer an expiring contract along with young talent such as Anthony Morrow, Anthony Randolph or Stephen Curry.
 • Detroit. The Pistons could offer a young talent in Charlie Villanueva along with expiring contracts in Chris Wilcox and Kwame Brown. But with ownership changing hands and the team already having a few long-term deals in place, it isn't very likely.

This Amare Stoudemire trade situation seems to add a new thread every day.

Here's what we know now.

As we told you yesterday, Stoudemire publicly stated that he's leaning towards opting in on the last year of his contract. Some thought this meant he'd be staying in Phoenix, but as ESPN's Chad Ford wrote today, that's not quite the case.

Yes, the Suns are still expected to offer him a contract extension soon. Yes, he could still very well opt in, re-sign and be a member of the Suns for the years to come.

But the Suns are still looking at trade options as well.

Part of Stoudemire coming out and saying he's leaning towards opting in on the last year of his contract is a bit of a power play: according to Ford, the Sixers are hot after him and are offering Andre Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert. So from the Sixers end, if Stoudemire opts out next season, they clear a ton of money off their books with Iggy and Dalembert gone, and Stoudemire's contact gone.

But by saying he may opt in, that means teams can't just look at Stoudemire's contract as an expiring one this season, they have to look at it as $17.6 million added to their payroll next season if they swing a trade for him. That's quite the opposite end of the spectrum.

As Ford also notes today, Stoudemire talked about opting in because he wants to go to a contender, wants a team that will re-sign him and that will be competitive. If weak teams use him as a salary dump, he doesn't seem as amicable to that.

ford_chad_30.jpg
[h5]Chad Ford[/h5]
Stoudemire wants a winner, whether it's the Suns or not
"Stoudemire wants a commitment from owner Robert Sarver that the Suns will continue to spend to get back into contention. Stoudemire doesn't want to commit to a team that's going to be in the lottery in future years. So unless the Suns blow Stoudemire away with their offer, they'll reach an agreement only if he is persuaded that the Suns are committed to further spending .... there's a reason Stoudemire went public about optin in: He wants some control over where he might be traded to. Philly -- a struggling team that sees Stoudemire as more an asset with a potentially expiring contract than as a cornerstone -- would likely be less interested if Stoudemire were planning to play out his contract. Therefore, when Stoudemire heard about the possible trade with the 76ers, he expressed his reservations about being traded to Philadelphia by going public with his musings about staying with his contract. In other words, he's sending a warning to teams that might see him as nothing more than an expiring contract. That aside, it seems likely Stoudemire will exercise his option to terminate his contract. If he doesn't, he's betting that he can (A) stay healthy and (B) fare well under the next collective bargaining agreement, which might be the rules of the game that shape Stoudemire's next contract if he doesn't exercise his option this year. Given his injury history and the determination of the owners to tighten up the next CBA, that's a huge risk."
[h5]Chris Sheridan[/h5]
Teams leery of signing Stoudemire to max deal
"The biggest complicating factor is that Amare wants a max extension, and with the cap expected to shrink next summer, and a potential lockout looming for 2011, there aren't a lot of teams anxious to tie up what could amount to 30-40 percent of their salary cap for a half-decade on a guy with his injury history."

http://
Why did Harris leave Nets?
11:19AM ET

[h5]New Jersey Nets [/h5]

In yesterday's Daily Dime, ESPN's Chris Sheridan reports Del Harris, who came in as interim coach Kiki Vandeweghe's lead assistant once Lawrence Frank was fired, has decided to leave the team.

"In a printed statement he issued afterward, Harris said he believes interim coach Kiki Vandeweghe has made strides with the New Jersey Nets; there is 'strong evidence that the team has gotten over the hump and will be much more competitive the rest of the way,' Harris said," writes Sheridan.

"But anybody who has ever written or read a prepared statement knows that the real truth is usually untold or glossed over, and Harris was dumbfounded that the news of his departure had broken during the game."

Sheridan, as you can see, was rather dubious of this crafted statement.

Adrian Wojnarowksi of Yahoo! Sports dug deep into the matter, and says Harris become tired of the immaturity on the Nets' roster.

"Sources familiar with Harris' decision suggested issues far less tidy: The Nets' front office made it clear to Harris he wouldn?t make the short list of candidates to take over the head-coaching job this spring," he writes. "Once Harris was told that, he decided he was done dealing with the immature elements of the Nets' locker room."

As we told you this morning, there's a possibility Harris will be back working with the Frisco D-League franchise, or the Mavericks in some capacity.

[h5]Dallas Mavericks [/h5]

[h5]Iggy's possible new teams[/h5]
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn't think he would make a trade before the deadline, but he has changed his mind after the way the team has been playing lately.

"Whereas before, we might not have listened, at least now we listen," Cuban told The Dallas Morning News. "Nothing dramatic has changed, except our performance."

Cuban said he worries about the Mavericks' locker room.

"You worry about chemistry all the time, [especially] when things aren't going well," Cuban said. "No team has perfect chemistry the whole year around."

According to Adrian Wojnarowksi of Yahoo! Sports today, the Mavs are monitoring the Kevin Martin situation in Sacramento, and are also in play for Andre Iguodala. They were at one time intersted in Caron Butler, but that's cooled off with his so-so play this season.

[h5]Chad Ford[/h5]
Sixers likely to make deal, and Dallas is in play
"It sounds as if the Sixers are very motivated to make a deal that gives them salary relief right now. They've been dangling Iguodala, once the cornerstone of the franchise, to any team willing to take Samuel Dalembert, too. Cleveland, Dallas and Houston have been mentioned as possible suitors. While Iguodala might be a little overpaid (and Dalembert is way overpaid), both players could help a team. Given that, I have to believe Philadelphia is going to find a way to make this happen."

[h5]Boston Celtics [/h5]

Rajon Rondo said Tuesday that he thought personal agenda's were going on with the Celtics, but Kevin Garnett says he doesn't think that's true.

"I'm not speaking for him, but on this team we have a lot of strong personalities," Garnett told ESPNBoston.com last night. "I remember last year when we lost to Portland -- lost three straight -- I could just sense that everybody within themselves was just trying to do more than they should or (were) reverting back to being leaders on their team versus the way we have been doing it.

"When I read the comments, or when I talked to him personally ... that's what it was. We aren't a team here that points fingers. We keep everyone accountable. Everyone knows what this is within the locker room. But if anything needs to be said, it will be said within the closed confinements of the locker room and among each other as men. I want everyone in here to respect that, all right?"

[h5]New Orleans Hornets [/h5]

Hornets All-Star Chris Paul is out with a meniscus tear in his left knee and will miss at least a month of action. Even though the team has only one true healthy point guard in Darren Collison, general manager/head coach Jeff Bower says he will not sign a player to a 10-day contract.

"We will have to redefine how we play in certain areas and play to the strengths of our players that we have out on the floor," Bower told The Times-Picayune. "We have some different things we have worked on, and we will continue to move forward."

The Hornets just got under the luxury tax line after trading Bobby Brown and Devin Brown, so Bower has to be careful about increasing the payroll.

[h5]Toronto Raptors [/h5]

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1977Chris Bosh has been the focus of most trade speculation surrounding the Raptors, however the power forward probably won't be moved this season. Team president Bryan Colangelo says he is talking to other clubs about potential trades.

"We're talking to a few teams to see if there's anything we can do to improve our basketball club," Colangelo told the Canadian Press . "We've never sat back and been comfortable. We're always going to compete and improve our levels of competition. I'm talking about not only a tweak, but in a big deal, we're going to be a buyer, not a seller."

http://
Big trade for Lakers unlikely
9:55AM ET

[h5]Los Angeles Lakers [/h5]

The Lakers have the second-best record in the league and the highest payroll. There has been some talk they would look at somebody like Kirk Hinrich, but general manager Mitch Kupchak doesn't see a trade on the horizon.

"There is no compelling reason to dramatically change this team, in particular its core," Kupchak told the Los Angeles Times. "We won a championship last year and we feel like we can be as strong this year with the one change we made -- the Ron Artest change.

"If this is the team we go into the playoffs with, we'll be happy with our roster, provided we stay healthy. The caveat, as always, is we'll look at roster flexibility and areas where we can tweak the roster."

http://
Allen feels better after talk with Ainge
9:18AM ET

[h5]Ray Allen | Celtics [/h5]

Ray Allen's name has been part of the rumor mill, so he and his wife talked with Danny Ainge on Tuesday. Allen says he'll no longer worry about the speculation.

"Danny just told me, 'Look, I know you guys have been dealing with this over the past couple of weeks,' " Allen told the Boston Herald. "He was like, 'I haven't made any calls in trying to get you traded. It's always speculation coming from other franchises and other newspaper outlets around the country.'

"So anything could happen. For me, I just keep playing basketball. It's not my job to sit here and worry and let it stress me or bog me down. You know, it was great to sit there and talk to Danny because he and I have a great relationship."

[h5]Dallas Mavericks [/h5]

Earlier this week Del Harris resigned as an assistant coach with the Nets. Harris is back in Dallas now and says he will go back to being the general manager for Frisco, which will begin play in the D-League next season.

Harris told the The Dallas Morning News that he would "like to work with Frisco and the Mavs in some combo way."

http://
Lowry won't rush back
[h5]Kyle Lowry | Rockets [/h5]

Kyle Lowry has been out with a sprained knee and could play Saturday in Philadelphia, but he won't rush back.

"It may be sooner or later, it may be after All-Star (weekend)," Lowry told the Houston Chronicle. "I'll take my time, and I won't come back unless I'm ready. I'm a tough guy. I always want to be out there with my teammates. I don't like to be out. Once I got the word it wasn't any tears or anything, I'm trying to do anything and everything I can to get back as soon as possible."

[h5]Darren Collison | Hornets [/h5]

During ESPN's Fastbreak show on Tuesday, former Hornets head coach Byron Scott said he didn't think rookie point guard Darren Collison could handle the burden of leading the team as they wait for Chris Paul to return from knee surgery. That comment has motivated the rookie.

"I woke up different this morning after hearing about that," Collison told The Times-Picayune. "I'm going to use that as motivation. Everybody is going to say this and that because I'm a rookie. But at the same time, this is about the team and not about myself."

http://
Van Gundy a numbers guy?
7:06AM ET

[h5]Stan Van Gundy | Magic [/h5]

Opinions are mixed about how statistics and various formulas can help a team when putting together scouting reports. Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy is one who thinks number crunching is important.

"If I have a gut feeling on something I generally like to check it out," Van Gundy tells the Orlando Sentinel. "I don't think you can quantify everything. I don't think you can go by the numbers [alone]. But I think they can certainly help you a great deal. And I think anything that can help you support what you think or change the way you think is important. I just don't think you can do it without looking at that stuff."

"Your gut is one thing, but I think you need to check and see if your gut is correct," Van Gundy added. "I've had people say, 'I don't need to check the numbers. I've seen it with my eyes.' Well, I would also say your eyes lie to you sometimes, and some of the guys you may really like and think are really doing things, when you get deeper into it, aren't or vice versa."

http://
Rumors getting to Iguodala?
6:19AM ET

[h5]Andre Iguodala | 76ers [/h5]

Andre Iguodala is aware that his name is all over the rumor mill and he's confident he can play a key role for the 76ers or any team that would acquire him.

"I feel like I'm one of the top players in the league and I can give whatever team I'm on a whole different dimension," Iguodala told The News-Journal. "Thinking in that perspective alone gives me that added confidence. It shows a new team what I can bring to the table."

"I try to block it out, but you hear it a lot, even when you're playing, because it's a tough crowd at home," he continued. "Our fans bring it up a lot. I don't think it changes my play at all. You continue to try to find a rhythm and try to be a good ballplayer no matter what the situation brings."

http://
Dalembert done pointing fingers?
[h5]Samuel Dalembert | 76ers [/h5]

Last season Samuel Dalembert let it be known that he wasn't thrilled with his situation with the Philadelphia 76ers and asked to be traded. Dalembert's focus this season is to help the team win, although he's aware the 76ers are trying to move him.

"I'm not focusing on trade rumors right now," Dalembert told the Philadelphia Daily News. "I'm trying to maximize my talent and help us to win. I'm done trying to point fingers or anything like that. When I came forward last year, people took it the wrong way, tried to make it seem like I was complaining. I don't like complaining. I like consistency."

"[I'm] guessing, when things are not working out, usually a team tries to make a trade for the better or to gain momentum," he added. "Am I going to be surprised [if something happens]? No. It'll be what's best for everybody."

http://
Beasley looks like Ewing?
[h5]Michael Beasley | Heat [/h5]

Last season Michael Beasley refused to wear protective knee pads or braces because he "didn't want to look Patrick Ewing."

Unfortunately for Beasley, he had to start wearing a knee brace Wednesday to protect his right knee, which he hyperextended recently.

"Now, I look just like Ewing," Beasley told The Miami Herald yesterday. "It's tough not to think about it when you've got a big, like, cast on your leg. It's going to take time to get used to."

http://
Bibby adjusting to new role
5:19AM ET

[h5]Mike Bibby | Hawks [/h5]

The Hawks signed Mike Bibby to a three-year contract last summer, but the 31 year old is playing less minutes and his statistics are down. There are also times when he doesn't play late in games with Jamal Crawford taking over at the point.

Bibby admits his new role was not expected, but he won't cause any problems.

"I didn't expect it," Bibby tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "but whatever Coach wants me to do, I'm going to go out there and do it. I'm not out there trying to score 20 points. I'm just trying to get the team into the flow of the game."

Head coach Mike Woodson wants Bibby to do more than score points.

"When Bibby is struggling, I throw him in there at the end and he does something. And it may be a pass, it may be a big shot," Woodson said. "The last two years I leaned on him a lot to score. Now I want him to defend and rebound a little bit if he can get in there. I know that's not his thing but I at least want him to help with defensive concepts."

http://
Kuester won't commit to Jerebko
[h5]Jonas Jerebko | Pistons [/h5]

Pistons rookie Jonas Jerebko has started the last two games at power forward, but head coach John Kuester isn't ready to name him a full-time starter at that position.

"As of now, Jonas is playing the four position, and that's an area where I think he can really help us, but I have confidence in all these other guys," Kuester told MLive.com. "Sometimes, it deals with the flow of the game. Sometimes, it can deal with little nicks and bruises. Sometimes, (it's) matchups. There's nothing etched in stone in regards to our frontline right now."

Tony Parker went through a full practice yesterday and didn't have any issues with his left sprained ankle. He's expected to return to the lineup tonight against Portland.

"I think he's possible, or probable, or whatever the words are," head coach Gregg Popovich told the San Antonio Express-News.

@ Woodson asking Bibby to defend and rebound.

Speaking of which.....any rumors/ideas of names of guys who might be waived after the deadline who can latch on somewhere? ATL desperately needs rebounding help (as does BOS), but we've got no real assets to trade...

He is, but still not good enough to shoot a team out of a zone for 48 minutes.

The only thing people have to do is close out on him. He's a good spot up shooter, that's it.

All I'm saying is I think Iggy at least makes them a contender in the west.  And Dirk himself can shoot enough for the whole squad.  I don't think it would make them better than the Lakers or the Nuggets, but at least be able to play with them.

They've been 2-3 in the West all year. If Iggy doesn't make them better than either of those teams then what's the point?

DALLAS -- The NBA All-Star Game at Cowboys Stadium will shatter the attendance record for a basketball game as the league said a crowd of more than 90,000 is expected.

But whether it will reach the grand goal of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is the question.

Mike Bass, the NBA's senior vice president of marketing, said a crowd of more than 90,000 is expected for the Feb. 14 game. That would shatter the record for attendance at a basketball game, which was set when a crowd of 78,129 watched Michigan State play Kentucky at Detroit's Ford Field on Dec. 13, 2003.

Jones, who partnered with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to bring the All-Star Game to North Texas, has a little higher goal. He is determined for the crowd to reach six figures.

"Well, we want to push the magical number and we think we have an opportunity here," Jones said before the Dec. 19 Texas-North Carolina college game, which served as a test run for the All-Star Game. "We're well along the way right now: one-double-0."

The record crowd for an All-Star Game is 44,735, set at the Houston Astrodome in 1989.

A crowd of 105,121 attended the Cowboys' first regular-season game in the $1.2 billion stadium, which features 60-yard-long high-definition screens that will be directly over the basketball court. That six-figure crowd drew concern from the Arlington fire marshals and public safety officials, prompting the Cowboys to limit the number of standing-room-only tickets sold in later games.

However, the setup for basketball features thousands of seats where the football field is for Cowboys games.

"If the NBA will let it go to 95," Cuban said, "there's no reason why it can't go to 100."

Tim MacMahon covers the Mavericks for ESPN Dallas. You can follow him on Twitter or leave a question for his weekly mailbag.

And the NBA doesnt get it when it comes to the All-Star game..............................
