Hudson to have Tommy John surgery

from mlb.com

ATLANTA -- Displaying that stubborn pride that helped him become of the best pitchers in the Majors, Tim Hudson will spend the next fewdays awaiting a miracle. At the same time, from a realistic standpoint, he understands that he's likely going to miss most of next season.
"Miracles happen," Hudson said at Turner Field before the start of Thursday's series finale against the Cardinals.

After examining Hudson on Wednesday, Braves physician Dr. Xavier Duralde and noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews both concluded that the Braves pitcher needs toundergo the Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgical procedure that typically requires a full year of rehab.

Hudson was given an opportunity to view an MRI exam that was performed on Monday, and he was shown where there appeared to be both a partial tear and fulltear of his ligament.

"The writing is on the wall," Hudson said.

Hudson will attempt to throw some time this weekend, and if he's able to do so without discomfort, he'll hold off on having the surgery. But thelikelihood of this happening is very slim. Odds are that Andrews will perform surgery in Birmingham, Ala., some time next week.

"You try to treat the symptoms," Hudson said. "You hate to just decide to do [Tommy John surgery] right off the bat. ... But it's at thepoint where it would be kind of foolish for me to rehab five months and try to let it heal that way."

Hudson, who is 11-7 with a 3.17 ERA in 23 appearances (22 starts) this year, is set to make $13 million in the final year of his contract next year. Thecontract includes a $12 million option, with a $1 million buyout for the 2010 season.

With this in mind, Hudson wants to give himself every opportunity to pitch as much as possible next year. While his desire is to stay with the Braves, hesimply has to get back on the mound just to earn a contract from any Major League team for 2010.

"It's frustrating," Hudson said. "I'm obviously disappointed. It's part of the game, and you can't do anything aboutit."

Hudson was removed from his July 23 start at Dolphin Stadium after just 68 pitches. He'd completed six scoreless innings against the Marlins. But heexited because of discomfort below his elbow. At the time, he thought he was suffering from a forearm strain caused by the fact that he'd thrown moresplit-finger fastballs than usual.

Over the next couple of months, Hudson will have the opportunity to talk to many of his teammates who have come back from Tommy John surgery in the past.Among this group of players are John Smoltz, Mike Gonzalez, Peter Moylan and, of course, Mike Hampton, who missed both the 2006 and '07 seasons whilerecovering from separate surgical procedures on his left elbow.

"Hampton probably has every answer that I can dream of having," Hudson said.

Braves were in talks for Jason Bay but nothing happened.

Imagine that Hampton the healthy one

Smoltz (thought he would give us 16 wins)
Hudson (thought he would give us 16 wins)
Glavine (thought he would give us 11 wins)

next year i hope Braves use money wisely because the Starting Pitching is bad with the exception of Jair Jurrjens. With Hudson being out until August of nextyear help is definitley needed.

1. Jair Jurrjens
2. Jorge Campillo (reliable so far but not good enough for 2nd Starter)
3. ____________ ???
4. Jo Jo Reyes

5. ____________ Charlie Morton? Chuck James ?

^ I'm going to have to wait and see who will fill in for Hudson and whoever for the rest of the season, then I'll update the OG post.

BTW 9-4 win for us.

Next Series Braves vs Brewers and face Sabathia and Ben Sheets looks to be a two game Shutout (prove me wrong Braves please)

Braves called up Chuck James and Clint Sammons because McCann is still shook from the head first tackle that Shane Victorino applied.

Baseball mourns loss of Skip Caray

Beloved Braves announcer continued legacy of excellence

ATLANTA -- The Braves family lost one of its most beloved members on Sunday, when Skip Caray passed away at his Atlanta-area home. Caray, who would have celebrated his 69th birthday on Aug. 12, went to take a nap Sunday afternoon and didn't awake. He is survived by his wife, Paula, two sons, Chip and Josh, two daughters, Shayelyn and Cindy, and seven grandchildren. Our baseball community has lost a legend today," said Braves president John Schuerholz. "The Braves family and Braves fans everywhere will sadly miss him. Our thoughts are with his wife Paula and his children."

Chip serves as both a Braves announcer and the play-by-play announcer for TBS' Major League Baseball coverage. Chip was broadcasting Sunday's game between the Angels and Yankees at Yankee Stadium when he heard the startling news about his father. "I'm just in shock," Chip said. "I know he wasn't feeling good, but this was unexpected. He hung the moon for me. I got to talk to him [on Saturday], and the last thing I got to say to him was, 'I love you.'"

Caray, who began broadcasting Braves games in 1976, battled multiple ailments over the past year that he linked to diabetes. When he wasn't available to broadcast this past weekend's series against the Brewers, it was revealed that he was suffering from bronchitis. Since the final month of last season, he had been limited to broadcasting only home games. When Caray returned to broadcast games at the beginning of this season, he talked about his near-death experience and said that he was happy to at least have an opportunity to return to the baseball world that had provided so much to himself and his family.

"I'm 68," Caray said on April 2. "If I go tonight, I've had a hell of a life."

While his presence may be gone, Caray's voice will continue forever live with the history of the Braves. His most memorable call arguably came when he exclaimed, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" after Braves center fielder Marquis Grissom caught the final out of the 1995 World Series.

Caray's arrival in Atlanta allowed him the opportunity to develop a friendship and working relationship with Ted Turner, whose innovative media initiatives allowed Caray and his close friend, Pete Van Wieren, to broadcast Braves games to a national audience on a superstation that would become TBS. Caray and Van Wieren began broadcasting Braves games together in 1976 and were still serving as broadcast partners during radio broadcasts this season. Both of them were inducted in the Braves Hall of Fame in 2004.

Last year, when TBS ended its 30-year affiliation with the Braves, Caray was saddened to know he was saying goodbye to a number of people that had been so good to him. He was always extremely grateful for the outpouring of sympathy he received after his father died in 1998. "In essence, you're saying goodbye to people who you've been part of their life for a long time," Caray said last August. "My access to them will now be denied."

Sad because i just heard him on the Braves radio this past week and i didn't even know he was struggling may his soul rest in peace he was a good play byplay man and did the Braves proud.

RIP to a Legend....I mean this season has to the be WORST season in the last 20 years or so, but as long as the Mets don't win the World Series, then allis well in my universe. BTW, Braves fans that see the games live, How is Kotchman doing???

CC needs to become a brave.
along with many other pitchers.

no matter how many bats you have if you give up more than you score you just cant win!

RIP to Skip. A very great Braves broadcasting legend for us...
