..:Official 2008 NL Central Thread:..Congratulations Chicago Cubs...:

If the Cubs sign Jim Edmonds, which it looks like they will, I will boo him unmercifully until his death, or until he retires and buys a few supermarket chainsback in his hometown, which ever comes first.

That man is a St. LOUIS CARDINAL , and I will never accept him as a CHICAGO CUB. That is wrong, its re-aligning the stars, spitting in the face of death, mixing oil with water.......it just shouldn't happen.

Secondly, memo to Jim Hendry......Edmonds sucks hard at this point. He was released by the worst offensive team in BASEBALL. NO NO NO NO NO....do NOT sign JimEdmonds.......NO.

If he hits a few walk-offs, I may change my mind.

I don't think we need him, Johnson and Pie are doin just fine, I don't see what Edmonds could bring at this point. Vet leadership? We have enough ofthat. But, we'll see.

As for the Edmonds signing, I just don't get it. I know we need another left handed bat, but I thought Edmonds left SD partially because he wanted to playeveryday, something he won't be able to do.

Let's admit it -- he's a has-been. If we sign him, I'll root for him....but in all honesty the guy can't stay healthy and he's clearly notthe field demon he used to be. He's merely average. He's Mark Prior in an outfielders clothing.

As for our Cubbies - still a game up on the Cards even after last night's loss.

In other news...I just bought a condo literally steps from the Friendly Confines. I close at the end of July! I am beyond stoked....

^ Damn man, congrats on the spot.

I bought my first place last year, but it's in Oregon, so I suck.

CONGRATS!!! Man i love that damn area! i am envious. I go to so manygames i should just live at wrigley!

You gonna have room for all your kicks Flint?? or do you have other places to store em?

Congrats on the spot though. Thats what life is all about.

Party at Flint's !!!!

Color me jealous. When I go to Chicago I am hitting you up, and I don't even know you. Just let me sleep on the couch and I will be out of your hair.

I also heard on the score that Edmonds is a cancer in the clubhouse. Whether there's any truth to that, who knows? But I agree with the other Cubs fans onthis board. I don't approve of this signing. Just because he's a former Red Bird is the last reason why I don't want him on this Cubs team.(thisreminds me of when the Bulls signed John Starks lmao)

Indeed, tough loss last night, but can't win em all.(Former Cub Shawn Estes getting his first W since '05? SMH lol). Dust it off, and get em tonight.Peavy is no easy task, but we have to get it done somehow.

FLINT:

I hoping it's a rooftop condo you bought?

But yeah, you won'tbe that far from me. I stay roughly a mile north from Wrigley. Just take Clark north. PARTY!!!

Only thing that bothers me about Edmonds is his reputation as a pud in the clubhouse. The Cubs seem to have good chemistry going on, you don't need thisdude coming in and screwing it all up. Now, I've heard that he is OK in the clubhouse as long as he's on a winning team so we'll see.

As far as him being a former Cardinal...I really don't care. If he helps the Cubs win it shouldn't matter. Remember Gary Gaetti in the late 90s? FormerCard, had some big hits for the cubs when they were on the run to the playoffs.

Pie needs to be in the lineup every day, if Piniella isn't going to play him in the bigs every day he needs to be in AAA getting ABs. I personally thinkPie would be fine if he was given the opportunity to play in the bigs every day, but it's not happening. The last 2-3 weeks he's been playing just aswell as Reed has been playing (even at the plate).

The Edmonds situation really isn't a very high-risk gamble. You're not paying him much, you're not removing a well-liked veteran to make room forhim, he can't do much worse than Johnson/Pie at the plate (he was starting to hit prior to his release), Pie gets PT to work at the plate every day inAAA.......if Edmonds sucks you just cut him and bring Pie back up. I think it's worth the gamble. If he hits 75% of what he was in his prime anddoesn't spread his douchebaggery in the clubhouse I think it's a good pickup.

Flint - I'm jealous of the new pickup. I should be moving to Southport near Addison on Aug. 1. Will make my trip to the games (live in Schaumburg now)easier...been to 4 so far this season...going again Saturday. Can't wait.

Go Cubs Go!

^^^I agree...he has KILLED AAA pitching the last year or two...but it's not doing him any good to be in the bigs if he's not getting ABs every game.I'd rather see him killing AAA pitching than sitting on the bench getting no work in.

Lilly and Peavy tonight. Need to make up for not beating Estes and his magical testes...gotta find someway to get to Peavy.

I was hoping for 5-2 on the homestand after the D-backs...but that was assuming a loss to Peavy.

I also think the Cubs don't want to make the same mistake they did for Patterson when he was highly acclaimed like Pie is now. Corey had his share of ABs,and we all know what happened there.

I don't want to risk Pie making him play now while we are in the chase of a pennant and World Series. It only adds more pressure to him. He should playmore, but not in the ML level. He should get more at bats. At AAA Iowa.

It is too risky for him to be playing everyday, when his defense is so stellar, and that is the only thing going for him. (Think about it, if that was Pieinstead of Reed Johnson at Nationals Park, when Johnson made that diving catch, Pie probably wouldn't even dove for the ball!

THANK YOU. As a Cardinals fan and a Cubs fan, we can certainly agree on this. What does Jimmy have left to offer? I love the guy, but he is just way pasthis prime.
And this is not John Mabry or a journeyman type player, he is basically a Cardinal mini-legend (not even close to Gibby, Stan The Man

Edmonds en route to Chicago
Paul Sullivan, 5:19 p.m.

Jim Edmonds is expected to be in a Cubs uniform Thursday afternoon, playing centerfield and batting ninth in the lineup.

Ninth?

"He's going to hit ninth," manager Lou Piniella said. "I'm going to move the pitcher to eighth, and hit himninth."

Piniella was joking, of course, and spent most of Wednesday's press conference trying to avoid talking about the new Cubsoutfielder.

The Edmonds' signing won't be official until he passes a physical tonight, so Piniella was wary of discussing thesubject.

As has been discussed repeatedly over the last few days, many fans consider the 37-year-old Edmonds washed up, and are wondering why theCubs would sign him, even for $284,000, the pro-rated amount of the minimum salary. San Diego and St. Louis are responsible for the rest of the $7.7 millionhe's owed this year.

Asked if Edmonds had lost a step in the outfield, Piniella hedged.

"I haven't seen him play all spring," Piniella said. "I never saw him. We played San Diego three or four times and henever played against us. I don't know. We're going on past history and we're going on what our scouts say. That's it. We're going to givehim an opportunity, assuming he passes his physical, and we'll go from there. That's all we can do."

The Cubs will have to make a roster move to make room for Edmonds. While Felix Pie is expected to be sent down to Triple-A Iowa, the Cubsmay also put Daryle Ward on the disabled list within the next day or two. Piniella said Ward's back is bothering him and he can't run.

That would give the Cubs an opportunity to bring up another outfielder, perhaps Matt Murton or Micah Hoffpauir, to serve as the fifthoutfielder behind Alfonso Soriano, Edmonds, Kosuke Fukudome and Reed Johnson.

Edmonds' calf injury in spring training could be the reason for his slow start in San Diego, though there's also the possibilityhe's cooked. Piniella said the calf problem "could explain the slow start. We'll find out."

Is this a low-risk gamble by the Cubs?

"What did Jim (Hendry) say?" Piniella replied. "Whatever Jim said is fine with me."

The Cubs general manager said he'd have an announcement on Edmonds after tonight's game, and that he'd be activated on Thursdayif he passes the physical.

"Obviously if it wasn't something we felt could possibly help us, we wouldn't have looked into it," Hendrysaid.

Hendry said Edmonds does not need any at-bats in the minors, and should be ready to go on Thursday. The scouting reports Hendry received onEdmonds were mostly positive.

"I think in general, most people feel he has something left in the tank," Hendry said. "I think he's going to be amotivated player. Obviously we're not going to ask him to go out there every single day. The people we had watching him in their normal coverage -- weweren't scouting him -- felt that he was getting better right before he was sent out. So we'll see."

So will Edmonds be the 2008 version of Gary Gaetti, or the reincarnation of Phil Nevin?

We'll find out soon.

Soriano, Soto Go Deep, Lilly K's 11
Cubs Win 8-5
CHICAGO -- Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto each homered and drove in three runs, and Ted Lilly reached double-digit strikeouts for the secondstraight start to power the Cubs to an 8-5 victory Wednesday night over the San Diego Padres.
Lilly (4-4), who struck out 10 in his last outing against Arizona, fanned 11 over six innings, the first time he has posted back to back double-digitstrikeout games in his career. The lefty gave up four runs on six hits, and improved to 3-0 this month.

For the second straight game, Soriano got things started with a bang. He connected against Jake Peavy (4-3) for his sixth homer this season, and 46th careerfirst-inning leadoff blast, most among active players and third highest all-time behind Rickey Henderson (81) and Craig Biggio (53).

Kosuke Fukudome, who had faced Peavy in the World Baseball Classic, doubled to start the Chicago second. Two outs later, Reed Johnson walked and Lilly wassafe on a wild pitch on a third strike to load the bases. Soriano delivered a two-run single to make it 3-0, and now is 11-for-23 with eight RBIs in his lastfive games.

Aramis Ramirez, Fukudome and Soto hit consecutive singles in the third inning, with Ramirez scoring on Soto's single.

The defending Cy Young champ, Peavy had his shortest outing of the season, getting pulled after four innings. The right-hander came into the game rankedamong the NL leaders in ERA and and strikeouts, and struck out eight.

Tadahito Iguchi hit a two-run single with two outs in the Padres fifth, with the second runner scoring despite a throw home from Soriano. The ball hit thedirt in front of the plate, and bounced over Soto. Scott Hairston scored from third on a wild pitch by Lilly to close to 4-3.

Soto belted his seventh homer in the fifth off Wil Ledezma, driving in Fukudome, who had singled, to go ahead 6-3. Ramirez and Johnson each hit RBI doublesin the sixth and seventh, respectively.
