Damn ESPN article talking about trading Will for pitching prospects or some starters. I think the untouchables are Mookie, Freddie, Julio and Will. I rather trade away prospects for proven guys.

Once again, the Los Angeles Dodgers were baseball's best team during the regular season. Once again, they didn't take home a World Series ring.

L.A. fell far short of the Fall Classic, suffering a stunning NLDS upset defeat to their NL West rival San Diego Padres. Though the Dodgers won it all in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, that remains their only title in a run of 10 straight postseason appearances.

After four 100-plus-win campaigns in the past five full seasons, what can the Dodgers do to stay on top all year -- October included? Here's a look at their notable free agents and trade candidates and their three biggest questions heading into 2023 and beyond.

Los Angeles Dodgers

i

Notable free agents: SS Trea Turner, SP Clayton Kershaw, RP Craig Kimbrel, 3B Justin Turner (club option), SP Andrew Heaney, SP Tyler Anderson, RP Tommy Kahnle, INF Hanser Alberto (club option), SP/RP David Price, OF Joey Gallo

Let's use this section to explore a name who is not on this list but could be: Cody Bellinger, who's slated to make somewhere in the neighborhood of $18 million in his final year of arbitration this offseason. Bellinger won the NL MVP in 2019, but since then he has batted only .203/.272/.376 and hasn't really shown any signs of getting back to his elite form offensively. In Game 4 of the NLDS, with a right-hander on the opposing mound and the Dodgers facing elimination, Bellinger was on the bench, a telling representation of how far he has fallen. Bellinger still brings plenty of defensive value at center field and is a major power threat at the bottom of a lineup. At 27, he's also young enough to inspire hope. But one has to wonder if a change of scenery might benefit both sides at this point. And whether the Dodgers would be better off non-tendering him in order to allocate that money elsewhere.

Trade candidates: C Will Smith, 2B Gavin Lux, RP Brusdar Graterol

The Dodgers continually produce elite catchers, the latest being Diego Cartaya, the No. 17 prospect in Kiley McDaniel's midseason rankings. Cartaya is probably still at least a year away from the major leagues, where Smith has established himself as arguably the game's best catcher. But if the Dodgers can get a haul for Smith, particularly to bolster their rotation, perhaps they'll be tempted. Smith is entering his first year of arbitration and brings a lot of value to a premium position, so he would be very highly coveted. The same can be said for Lux, though to a lesser extent. The Dodgers might also be able to get a good return for Graterol, whom a lot of teams might see as their full-time closer. The Dodgers probably don't -- and they have proved highly capable of producing high-end bullpen arms from within.

Extension candidates: SP Julio Urias

Walker Buehler is recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, Kershaw is seemingly going year by year at this point in his career and only Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin are locked in for the foreseeable future. The Dodgers would be smart to attain some certainty for their rotation by extending Urias, whom they signed out of Mexico when he was only 16. But they'll have to come with a big offer. Urias can be a free agent after the 2023 season and Scott Boras is his agent.

1. What do they do at shortstop?

A lot of the talk surrounding Trea Turner when he came over at midseason last year was that he would eventually sign with an East Coast team, or at least one that conducts spring training in Florida. Turner has rebutted that notion, as you might expect for a pending free agent who wants to maximize his market. But he also seems to be having a lot of fun with the Dodgers, so perhaps his mindset has shifted. In any case, shortstop is one of few places where the Dodgers have a clear hole. They can play Lux or Chris Taylor there, but that wouldn't be ideal. Turner will join a star-studded list of free agent shortstops that also includes Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts and Dansby Swanson. Chances are the Dodgers will come away with one of those players. If they're going to spend big again this offseason, this is probably where they'll do it. An ideal cross-section of top free agents is lining up with a major need on a high-spending team.

2. How do they fill out their rotation?

As noted above, three members of the Dodgers' starting rotation could soon venture into free agency. That doesn't mean the Dodgers are low on starters: They still have Urias, May and Gonsolin lined up for next season. The expectation is that Kershaw will return as well, but his hometown Texas Rangers still loom as a possibility. And even if he does come back the Dodgers would probably like to add at least one more starting pitcher. Perhaps they leave a spot open for one of their young arms -- Bobby Miller, Gavin Stone, Ryan Pepiot -- but they'll at least try to bolster this group.

3. Who becomes their closer?

As a modern executive, Andrew Friedman fits the mold of someone who wouldn't be prone to shelling out big money for an established closer, given the volatility of relievers in general. But that hasn't necessarily been the case. Friedman signed Kenley Jansen to a five-year, $80 million extension in 2017, then traded for Kimbrel this past April -- shortly after failing to re-sign Jansen again. Kimbrel underperformed in 2022 and was stripped of his job as closer heading into the postseason. The Dodgers are expected to look elsewhere this offseason. Jansen will be a free agent again, as will Edwin Diaz. But perhaps the Dodgers finally decide to go by committee in the ninth. Their bullpen depth is still very strong.

TBH rather trade Cartaya for some wild haul and keep Will to avoid the waiting. Pitching is fine (maybe an established closer or someone steps up into the role) but SS/hitting depth is the problem.

If they trade Will it means they really believe in Cartaya and confident Barnes can help ease his transition.

With the shift rules changing I’m sure we’ll hear some interesting names pop up this offseason. One thing I think we all can agree on is that the only wrong move would be to run it back LOL!

Watching this Yankee game. Must be nice to have a pitcher go more than 5 inning :smh:

Be allowed to go more than 5.

Tony IMO could have gone 2 more. Musgrove threw 101 pitches.

But the team that manages Dave made him take Anderson out...

And I go to check the Yankees game and all I hear is 111 win dodgers....

I don't think I'll watch another game because if I hear 111 again I'm gonna throw something.

Media creates some nasty narratives while knowing regular season wins mean nothing in the post season.

I can’t believe that after more than a decade of dominance and the highest payroll year in and year out the Dodgers only have a “bubble” World Series to show for their efforts. Wow.

I mean even the 90s ATL Braves won a legit title through their run. Disappointing.

We are the new Braves, minus the title. All we have to show for it are 9 out of 10 west titles. Some memorable wins, crazy choke jobs.

Although I don’t think it’s fully his fault, I think it’s time to move on from Dave Roberts and change things around. Dodgers can breeze through a season but once the playoffs come idk if the pressure breaks the guys, the manager freaks out over every little thing and over thinks it, or they’re just not good when it matters the most.

They’ve had a multitude of great players, big free agent signings, diamond in the rough stars, but can’t put them all together once the playoffs hit. 2017 should have been a title. Took the Astros to game 7, even with them cheating every game. But besides that it’s been pretty good regular seasons and poor performances in the playoffs.

I wonder what the plan is moving forward. I honestly don’t know how much autonomy Dave Roberts has and how much of it is him being micromanaged by the nerds above. But the memo needs to get out there to both of them that you gotta manage differently in October than you do in the regular season.

If a guy is dealing like we saw in game 4. You gotta let him go back out to try and give you one more inning. All that quick hook to pull the pitcher crap, by all means have at it during the regular season. But that stuff needs to go out the window in October.

Hopefully they approach the regular season differently next year though in terms of having a team that’s better suited for October baseball even if it comes at the expense of regular season wins.

6 teams in each league make the playoffs. Wild card teams are guaranteed a best of 3 instead of the 1 game elimination under the old format. Nothing wrong with taking the foot of the gas during the regular season and coasting at times in a way similar to how veteran NBA and NHL teams approach the regular season knowing they’ll turn it on when the playoffs start.

You mean the proven guys who all choked in the playoffs?

Come on, it's one series. You can't tell me you'd be serious about wanting any of the four he mentioned to be gone.. hitting catchers don't grow on trees, Mookie didn't show up in a critical series that most others didn't show up for, Freddie actually did well, and Urias did his thing.

Man...

This one stings because we were up. Tyler was dealing IMO...

Going with the stupid analytics changed the series.

We won a world series because of pulling a pitcher too early and we turn around and do the same thing.

If we wouldn't have had a lead and just lost the game I'd be ok. The way we lost game 4 bothers the hell out of me.

There is no reason to fire Dave....I just wish they would let Dave do his job and MANAGE the game.

Nah I’m keeping those four. Just pissed at all these guys right now

Yeah man, it was just so avoidable... It's wild because earlier that same day, I watched the M's let their rookie in George Kirby go back and pitch the 7th against the Astros, purely based off of feel and how he looked leading up to that point. Also, using Kahnle and Yency on back-to-back nights, but we don't see Dustin May at all?! More I think about **** the more I get upset..

Yeah...I mean besides 2020 we have delt with these losses but this one is entirely different.

I don't get it...in 2020 we used Urias to close...why not use May there as a long closer so you can have Martin and those other guys fresh for a possible game 5?

Just a very troublesome end to this season.

If they don't win next year wholesale changes have to happen.

I think if they finally pull through in a full season with this group. It’s going to be in a season where they aren’t the regular season powerhouse they’ve been in years past. It’s going to be in a season where they face all types of adversity and scrutiny during the season, make some season changing moves at the deadline and go into October not being the team expected to win it all.

It happens in sports a lot where the team that finally does pull through isn’t as good record wise as some of the other teams they had in recent years.

Sadly you described the Padres to a t....

Hell the Braves last year didn’t go over .500 for the season until early August. The Nationals won it all the season after they lost Bryce Harper and had a 19-31 start. The Royals won in 2015 after being a few outs away from elimination and the Johnny Cueto trade pushed them over the hump.

Imo regular season adversity is good. They didn’t get the final result they wanted. But I can appreciate the 2018 team. Started slow, 10 games under .500 at some point. Turned it around and went on a deep run.

Still disgusted with our performance

F it. Sign a big FA pitcher. Call up the farm

Let the Turners and Chokeshaw walk

I bet we’ll end up winning it all when we have low expectations for this team. Like half the team is hurt and we barely make the playoffs  :smh:

That’s exactly how it’s going to be. If you want to know something that’s mind blowing. Since 1990, the eventual World Series champion only won 100+ games 5 times. 98 Yankees, 09 Yankees, 16 Cubs, 17 Astros, and 18 Red Sox.

When they win it again it’s going to be some scrappy 90 win team that gets the job done.

Technically 4. Astros cheated
