At 12 mil a year can they afford to take him off air though...we'll have to see
Sunk cost. The people watching espn will watch if he’s given a seat next to Rachel and replaced with a familiar face. Butchering those players’ names from Nigeria and the dumb **** he said about Ohtani should get him sidelined, don’t care how much they pay him. Like baseball hasn’t been dominated by guys not from the US for ages. He’s a ******* bum.

They’re really trying to swing for the fence, hopefully it’s just talk. Not saying Dame, Steph, and Klay wouldn’t be legit, but they need someone to anchor the bench. Tsunami Poppy isn’t it.
Yeah, I'm not sure how okay I would be to want that deal to even be considered. But we'll see what happens. GM Bob Myers has to build this roster right. Steve Kerr also needs to let Steph play free like he did this season moving forward.

IMO, Wiseman is going to stay.

Karen A Smith clearly hates or at the very least dislikes non-Americans. Between the offensive Nigerian comments and telling Shohei he needs to speak English in this county, he’s looking real bad.

didn’t he have some questionable Jeremy Lin takes too?

Stephon Marbury improved his ability to speak mandarin lines in commercials for the chinese market.

Why did he do this?

Because it helps to be able to speak the native language of the country you're are trying to promote products in.

If you lived in Japan, and hoped to help market products in Japan

it seems pretty obvious that being able to speak Japanese would pretty helpful.

An obvious anodyne comment that any reasonable person would agree with get blown up into a controversy...

it's textbook example of elites using the fight for social justice as greasy office politics.

it's absurd. do not be fooled.

Except he’s trying to play baseball, not do commercials to sell baseball which is supposed to be America’s pastime. SAS said a lot of words just say “we speak English in the country”. There are plenty of rants where ignorant people said the same thing that got them fired.

SAS is not talking about his ability to play baseball

he's talking about promoting the game, selling the game.
he's saying it helps if big stars can promote the game, and

its harder to promote the game when you don't speak the native language of the country.

do you disagree?

What about misogynistic too?

Was he outright racist? No. I just think his wording and point were asinine. We live in fragile/sensitive times. He clearly was looking for something to talk about. He's got hours of content to generate every day.

But I just threw my social justice warrior shades on and say Stop the Asian Violence.

There is a huge temptation to pile on someone as annoying and extra as SAS

but don't take the bait.

its annodyne obvious comment, that would be applicable in any country on the planet earth.

Well baseball been having dudes as stars who could only speak Spanish for decades now and the game kept going, don’t see how its any different for the Japanese cat now

Stephen A just saying anything and you running to the counter point as usual

That's nice

But Stephen A. Smith said the dude was hurting the MLB by relying on an interpreter.

It was cool that Marbury learned the language so he could market himself. But I don't think it would be reasonable to argue the Marbury hurt the China basketball league with his English

Nor do I think it would be reasonable to put it on the employee in a foreign country hurting their employer by not having great local language skills

It is one thing to say it would be good for Ohtani to learn fluent English to market himself and in turn the game better. It is another thing to claim he is hurting the MLB. That seems like taking it one step pass a reasonable take

Plus Smith threw in some more buffoon sauce my saying it would be better if a white guy was playing this good. Welp, they are not.

A reasonable point can be made about it better from a marketing standpoint if a young generational talent spoke the same language as most of the league's potential viewers. Smith chose to throw in unnecessary dog whistly nonsense. So I think it is fair people have an issue with that.

What SAS said went well beyond suggesting that Ohtani speaking English "might help". It was a rant suggesting that it was a problem the biggest draw in MLB baseball is needs an intepreter. I would argue that it was unreasonable in conecept and certainly stated in an unreasonable way. And the people who I see most angry about it on Twitter aren't "elites", but other American immigrants for whom English is a second language.

best player in baseball speaks english and does nothing to promote the game

stupid take by screaming a smith

That clip about the Nigerian team :{

I really wish people would stop posting his videos in here lol this is the only place I ever come across screaming a smith content.

In addition to the otehr stuff you said, the fact is Ohtani already makes the most money in endorsements of anyone in Major League Baseball. So him becoming more proficient at English doesn't seem necessary and probably would only "help" marginally, if at all.
