I think you’re vastly overrating how much fhe language thing helps. To use one of your examples, Marbury was a star in China as soon as he got there. Maybe learning Chinese resulted in him being more appreciated there, but he’s a legend there because of what he did on the court. Same reason they love Jimmer now.

And, yeah, if you’re going to say that this whole SAS controversy is “elites” trying to make an issue out of nothing, then who is talking about it on Twitter does make your point less true because it undermines one of your main premises.
I'm overstating fine okay, let's agree to disagree.

But in that you tacitly acknowledge that it helps.
If it does I don't see how you can be outraged by SAS point.

If you wanna disagree fine but acting like he just said something insane that warrants banning is nuts.

On the second point, I strongly disagree.
It's a huge problem, twitter people who happen to fit the identity profile using that to claim a level of representation of an entire group opinion.

And people using that as a cudgel against people they don't like.

i don't know anything about baseball but logically/realistically thinking about this, how can it HURT the MLB? that's a pretty big statement with nothing to back it up with lol.

hypothetically speaking, if all or majority of MLB fans are racists & he doesn't add new MLB fans, i can see how this end up hurting MLB.

I fully expect giannis to continue eating. People forget he averaged 40 against in in the regular season. Suns defense on him didn't get any better. He's doing it again. Bucks have 2 more home games. They just have to take one in PHX. Just 1. We thought they couldn't take 1 in Brooklyn and they did.

I'm telling you, these best players on the sun's built like smores. Hard on the outside, but they soft in the middle. Apply pressure, they'll snap. They would've lost in 5 if AD body wasn't made out of spaghetti noodles.

If Bucks take next game, highly likely they take game 5 on the road. They do, this thing is over in 6 in Milwaukee.

But then why is he wasting our time stating this fact? So as a viewer, should I get upset at his words and his station's decision to broadcast this segment? There's not better things to talk about in more constructive and critical ways. Or do we just scream and parse together pseudo intellectual arguments?

And should his criticism be levied to the organization that brought him over to the states to play? Should we not expect a reasonable time for him to pick up the language? Or perhaps, this could be an opportunity to discuss the globalization of the sport? Japan. Cuba. Dominican Republic.
Lol he's the host of an opinion show?

It all comes down to can Middleton and Jrue show up on the road. You know what you getting with Giannis. Hes automatic. 30pt double double damn near every night.

These last few pages proves ESPN and their hot take strategy works. The takes are dumb but it gets people clicking, mentioning, and retweeting the brand.

Ever since ESPN crafted their entire model after Skip and SAS, I view it all as sensationalized nonsense just like the political news.
See my response several pages back….

Man’s a walking mismatch every night. Of course he’s gonna eat. If Giannis has a bad night, it’s not because of something anyone on the opposing team did. It’ll be because he decided to attempt a bunch of threes.

Dog whistle is such a slippery unfalsafianle term.

I think it requires reading parsing SAS in the most obtuse and uncharitable way to come to that conclusion.

Nobody really believes that SAS beef with Ohtani is that he's Asian or that it'd be better if he was a white guy.

He's staying the obvious truth it's easier to promote when you speak the language.

I don't know why we're pretending otherwise.

Smith said that a foreign-born player was hurting baseball because he used an interpreter, and somehow the issue is with me being uncharitable to Smith.

I don't think it requires to assume the worst of Smith to say what I said. Like it is really crazy for someone to say a middle-aged dude that has expressed some other conservative social opinions over the year might hold some regressive views of foreigners not speaking English. I didn't call Smith a racist or xenophobe, that is the most uncharitable assertion someone could have made of Smith, all I said was framing of the issue was dog whistly because he took it beyond "would be better" or "not helping" and said this lack of language skills was hurting professional baseball.

So spare me this "we don't know what is in his heart and mind" steez. I am talking about his words

I swear once someone doesn't see it your way they must be pretending. You are literally changing what he said to someone more innocuous to act like everyone that doesn't see it your way is wildin out. Wanting people to accept some simple truth instead of considering Smith's rhetoric. If he had simply said it would be better for the MLB from a marketing standpoint if their biggest star new English that would be one thing, but guess what Osh, that is not how Smith framed it.

Smith's job is to critique how someone else does their job. But somehow, it is off-limits to critique how he did his

Good ******* grief

Its obviously a problem if your biggest star can't communicate in the native language of the country.

Ohtani being able to speak English would definitely help.

PK Subban hockey player got drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and took French lessons to increase this marketability in Quebec

Why? Because it helps to speak the native language of the people your selling to.

I don't really care who is angry about this on twitter,
It doesn't make it less true.

The NBA has a huge problem when the story before a Finals game is who the ref is.
only player than whines about scott foster is cpee3 :shrugs:
I was naive and a serious skeptic AGAINST the nba conspiracy theorists for the longest. I feel different now. For one, I’ve been betting nba for almost 20 yrs now. Which gives you a certain perspective. But what really put me over was listening to the Whistleblower podcast that is a 10 part deep dive into the Tim Donaghy betting scandal. They talk about differentiating “fixing games vs manipulating games based on betting lines”. I have absolutely no doubt there’s a lot of shady refs who manipulate and fix games and Scott Foster 100% is one of them. Foster has extremely strong ties to Donaghy. There were phone records where those 2 talked for quick 1-2 minute calls after games for like 150 times over the season when Donaghy didn’t have actual phone calls with other refs more than a handful of times in the same span. All the calls took place before/after games. They said they’d talk to kill time which was a blatant lie

All these leagues are fixed/manipulated. Some more than others.

So, the Bucks actually gave the Suns problems when they put Giannis at the 5 and sat B. Lopez? Who would've thunk?

Suns basically gave up running the PnR every chance they get and have moved on to exclusively targeting Connaughton. Losing Saric was a huge loss for Phoenix. Kaminsky is basically running around like a chicken with it's head cut off.

Why the Hell did it take Bub this long to make this adjustment?
Too damn long

Where did I say he said something “insane” or should be “banned”?

There is a middle ground between that and acting like his comments were completely innocuous and self-evident, like you.

I think he said something offensive, insensitive, to me, not particularly persuasive; never did I use the word insane nor did I ever call for him to be banned.

And on point two, I just want to know how you know who’s “really” bothered by SAS’s comments on this and who are just posturing “elites”?

guy in your avy is hurting the MLB cuz he doesn't speak English. And shame on MLB fans for making him the leading vote getter. His dad was bad for the game too.

1. 'm not saying you specifically I was speaking more generally to what i've seen in this thread.

2. I have no idea, you can't know; that's why it's dangerous to use these people as representation of a groups level of outrage.
