Kinda……SAS is not talking about his ability to play baseball
he's talking about promoting the game, selling the game.
he's saying it helps if big stars can promote the game, and
its harder to promote the game when you don't speak the native language of the country.
do you disagree?
They can just condense it to the 12minutes of actual gameplay.if any sport needs to go
its american football
Kinda……
1.)His play does that.
2.) You need to hear your favorite athlete say, “I’m good, come watch me.” to be a fan?
“need Bryce harper or Mike trout to be the face of the game.”
**** outta here
The thing is MLB doesn't even market the white guys like Trout and Bryce well either lmao. That's why SAS' comments don't stick
I could not point out Mike Trout in a crowd nor do I have any clue what he sounds like and he's a generational talent
Its obviously a problem if your biggest star can't communicate in the native language of the country. What SAS said went well beyond suggesting that Otani speaking English "might help". It was a rant suggesting that it was a problem the biggest draw in MLB baseball is needs an intepreter. I would argue that it was unreasonable in conecept and certainly stated in an unreasonable way. And the people who I see most angry about it on Twitter aren't "elites", but other American immigrants for whom English is a second language.

Ohtani being able to speak English would definitely help.
PK Subban hockey player got drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and took French lessons to increase this marketability in Quebec
Why? Because it helps to speak the native language of the people your selling to.
I don't really care who is angry about this on twitter,
It doesn't make it less true.
I really think it's the defense more than the nose. He got his nose reset that same night. Was still having to go head up with pat Bev. And now jrue and PJ.True he’s still putting up big counting numbers.
But in the 7 games since breaking his nose, he’s shooting 36.4% from the field and 28.8% from three.
In games 1-12, before he broke his nose, he was shooting 48% from the field and 38% from three.
Dog whistle is such a slippery unfalsafianle term. That's nice
But Stephen A. Smith said the dude was hurting the MLB by relying on an interpreter.
It was cool that Marbury learned the language so he could market himself. But I don't think it would be reasonable to argue the Marbury hurt the China basketball league with his English
Nor do I think it would be reasonable to put it on the employee in a foreign country hurting their employer by not having great local language skills
It is one thing to say it would be good for Ohtani to learn fluent English to market himself and in turn the game better. It is another thing to claim he is hurting the MLB. That seems like taking it one step pass a reasonable take
Plus Smith threw in some more buffoon sauce my saying it would be better if a white guy was playing this good. Welp, they are not.
A reasonable point can be made about it better from a marketing standpoint if a young generational talent spoke the same language as most of the league's potential viewers. Smith chose to throw in unnecessary dog whistly nonsense. So I think it is fair people have an issue with that.
But then why is he wasting our time stating this fact? So as a viewer, should I get upset at his words and his station's decision to broadcast this segment? There's not better things to talk about in more constructive and critical ways. Or do we just scream and parse together pseudo intellectual arguments?Dog whistle is such a slippery unfalsafianle term.
I think it requires reading parsing SAS in the most obtuse and uncharitable way to come to that conclusion.
Nobody really believes that SAS beef with Ohtani is that he's Asian or that it'd be better if he was a white guy.
He's staying the obvious truth it's easier to promote when you speak the language.
I don't know why we're pretending otherwise.
Homie is like one of 3 baseball players I’ve heard about this year. He pitches and hits homers. Don’t care what language he speaks, if I’ve heard of him he’s promoting

Wouldn’t have known about it if it didn’t pop up here. This is the extent of me being active on social media. These last few pages proves ESPN and their hot take strategy works. The takes are dumb but it gets people clicking, mentioning, and retweeting the brand.
Ever since ESPN crafted their entire model after Skip and SAS, I view it all as sensationalized nonsense just like the political news.
It's one thing to say 'It's easier to promote in a country if you can speak the language'
But knowing SAS I'm sure he didn't say it quite like that
I figured.He didn’t. At all.
