Sure okay.
It's the exact same principle and you know it.

Never mind the fact I gave multiple examples of athletes in hockey making efforts to learn French to improve their marketability.

but hopefully the multi millionaire Ohtani is heartened by your attempts to protect him from SASs supposedly vicious xenophobia.

What has those athletes learning French done for hockey's popularity? We still don't give a **** about it here
Meanwhile I'm tuning in to see Ohatani when I can and I don't like baseball much at all.
Which hockey player has been close to as popular internationally. Subban is the only name I can give you

Someone said it. These "American" sports leagues desire globalization. Why? Money.

The First Take segment was stupid. And the company got SAS in hot water for engaging in it. Worse, he HAD to apologize for it. Granted, it was on air versus the behind the closed doors (and lack of an apology from Nichols).

Baseball is big in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Japan, etc.

We acting like the NBA hasn't gotten players from China, Yugoslavia, Canada, Africa, etc. If the player can't speak English, the only thing it's hurting is the bottom line not the game. It raises the profile of the game and inspires locals to pursue playing and possibly becoming a professional.

I've been to Canada many times, it's great. It's not that great to be so consistently ignorant on racial issues.

please

my family faced lots of discrimination just for having thick accents.
I know well what it took to be successful and the difficulties they faced.

pretending like learning english doesn't help you in american doesn't actually help anyone experiencing language related discrimination.

it helped with their marketability in quebec. where french is the dominant language.

quebecers like it when you speak french, even if it's just a little bit.

If you want a real example of SAS xenophobia.

Didn't he make fun of Sammy Sosa for using an interpreter when he was UNDER PENALTY OF PERJURY.

making fun of a dude for not wanting to use his second language to answer questions that, one wrong statement could land him in jail
is about 10 million times worse than the Ohtani comment.

The main thing they were investigating was steroid use, Sosa still lied and said he didn't use any, they thought about a perjury investigation like 4 years later and nothing came of it.

If you are a star hockey player in quebec it is good to learn french.
If you are a star baseball player in america it is good to learn english.

neither statement is xenophobic.

Looking at things like this so black and white (no pun intended) is just tone deaf to me. But do you man.

making fun of a dude for choosing to use an interpreter under penalty of perjury is obviously xenophobic.

Ohtani is a multimillion-dollar pro athlete, and is doing **** in a major professional sport we have not seen in generations

That dude doesn't need English language skills to improve his job prospects. Comparing him to regular joes working 9-5s is ridiculous

If he wants to improve his English language skills for whatever reason, whether it be to communicate better with his teammates and coaches, or be able to land more marketing deals, then cool for him. But he doesn't have to, he doesn't have to play by the same rules as the regular Joe.

Nor does he need to worry about promoting the game as an English speaker, in America. I really don't care if the mostly white owners don't have another marketing tool at their disposal to help make them more money.

No, this was perfectly fine. My mom was in court for PEDs once and she testified in broken english. So that means everyone should be okay with it.

Damn, can y'all tell there's no game tonight?
what you talking about
MLB all star game is tonight

ohtani pitching to tatis

Cool call it xenophobic if you like

I am saying there is more context to what happened. Sosa didn't give answers in Spanish like Ohtani does, he had one next to him to translate the questions. He answered in English if I remember correctly. I the joke at the time is that when he was testifying his English skills seemed to decrease, and was way less talkative than usual, as a way of not having to give longer answers. But even then, Sosa still perjured himself. So did other players. So if Sosa was so concerned of unintentionally committing perjury, then why leave out the thing that almost got him caught up is him intentionally lying about his steroid use.

No one said he needed to do anything. He can do it or not.
You don't need to learn french if you play for Montreal, it just helps if you do.

I agree totally.

Im confused so because he's rich athlete it's xenophobia to point out he'd be more marketable if he spoke english?
when you say it to regular people its all good?

that's cool. I don't care either. im a sports nerd i'm watching regardless.
but i can admit itd be better for baseball if he did speak english.

if you wanna attack him for lying sure, he lied.

but people don't do that they make fun of him for using an interpreter. which is a totally reasonable request when english is your second language.

Dude, stop and think for a second....

Sosa didn't need an interpreter for 99% of the things he did

But he needed one to make sure he didn't say something that would land him in jail

Yet with her presented, he still lied and said something that would have landed him in jail

So you if wanted to argue the interpreter was needed to keep him from committing unintentional perjury, it undercuts that claimed that with her present, he intentionally committed perjury.

Call Smith's comment xenophobic, I got no issue with that, but you put some extra sauce on it that was not needed.
