I think someone like Big Papi or like Manny Ramirez built a strong connection with the American public with heavily accented English...

that they would not have been able to do if they only spoke through an interpreter.

but we can agree tio disagree

Ohtani has full on interviews without an interpreter. It takes 2 seconds of research to know that.

1. okay you know what i mean tho, i just pulled a random country. pick any country where the main language is not english. the point still reamins

2. he didn't say "dude speak English"

SAS speaks to the lowest common denominator of people. Some will 100% take it for that. Either way, he’s wrong.
The game grows through performance and visibility. Always been this way.

I've seen him do a full 3 minutes without one.

Your stances are always based against being annoyed with others' so this is a waste of time anyway.

well yes, dumb things people say sometimes do annoy me.
im weird like that.

Ohtani speaks Japanese so his fans at home could understand then the translator is in english so his fans here could understand.

Not sure why it's a hard concept to grasp.
This is another thing. Baseball is HUGE in Japan. If I'm in the home of baseball showing off, I'm doing it for the people back home and letting them know. What are they gonna do, get rid of me? I'm one of the best players alive. Better learn Japanese.

If you want a real example of SAS xenophobia.

Didn't he make fun of Sammy Sosa for using an interpreter when he was UNDER PENALTY OF PERJURY.

making fun of a dude for not wanting to use his second language to answer questions that, one wrong statement could land him in jail
is about 10 million times worse than the Ohtani comment.

A "real" example? It's not an either-or thing, there can be a sliding scale.
The existence of lynching doesn't absolve all "lesser" acts of racism.

If I was playing basketball in the Philippines and was big star

and someone told me;
"man you'd be a bigger star if you learn Tagalog. kinda sucks the biggest star in the PBA can't speak Tagalog. "

I would not recoil in horror and accuse them of anti canadian immigrant xenophobia.
and neither would anyone in this thread. because it's pretty self evident.
This comparison is so bad because of the unique history of America and the colonizing West and you know it.

Saying someone needs to learn English because he’s in America isn’t making fun of him. It’s way past that. I’d make a point to not speak English on camera for a while behind that. Maybe reporters should learn his language since they want information from him.

With 2 days between games, I’m surprised it’s still sports related. It could be worse.
There hasn't been a good cookie discussion in a minute, has there?

Oatmeal raisin is the reason for most trust issues.

I find this perspective to be totally baffling.

So because american colonization, you can't state a self evident truth about the advantage of speaking english in a majority english nation?

Should my mom have been offended because of Canada's history of colonization
when people told her she needed to learn french if she really wanted to rise in her job?

Your arguments for this are so bad that I’m just nit going to respond. Comparing your mom’s 9-5 to professional athletes is asinine though.

I've been to Canada many times, it's great. It's not that great to be so consistently ignorant on racial issues.

Sure okay.
It's the exact same principle and you know it.

Never mind the fact I gave multiple examples of athletes in hockey making efforts to learn French to improve their marketability.

but hopefully the multi millionaire Ohtani is heartened by your attempts to protect him from SASs supposedly vicious xenophobia.
