Offensively the Bucks actually made the right adjustments going back to G2.
Ayton is a drop big, Giannis is the best roll man in the league, so get Middleton out of iso and let him handle the ball in the PnR. He can walk into his midrange, he can spray the ball out to shooters if Phoenix sends help on Giannis rolling. Much easier & cleaner looks than going iso against Bridges. Jrue can run it as well. Everybody gets cleaner looks.
Giannis’ knee felt better in G2 and he was able to play his regular playoff minutes again. Bud has mostly scrapped those 30 foot isos and has him either rolling in the PnR or posting up at 10-15 feet, and he’s going quickly. It’s impossible to double him in a lot of these scenarios.
Just great coaching, everything they did in G7 to close out Brooklyn. Bud has turned in a great playoff run.
Bucks finished with a 118 offensive rating in G2, which is elite
This is with Giannis & Pat Connaughton being the only guys making shots in that game.
So you get back home, Giannis is still unguardable playing like a center instead of a wing & the hope is that Khris & Jrue make more of these open looks out of PnR on their home floor, which is exactly what happened.
In G3, they stuck to the script, Phoenix’ offensive execution wasn’t as sharp on the road and Milwaukee started flipping the game in the 2nd quarter. You saw a bit of everything.
- Hit ahead in transition to lock in the cross match
- Jrue continued aggression against smaller guards, beating cam Payne twice
- Ayton guarding nobody in drop
- Giannis starting his offense at 15 feet, putting crowder in the rim, perhaps you double quicker in situations like these but obviously you’re then exposed to 3s
- A steady dose of Khris/Jrue PnR
Just exceptional execution in the halfcourt, continued from G2. PHX sloppy play led to some run outs & easy layups on the break and the Bucks end up with 35 in the quarter.
You see the Bucks have changed up so simply sending more help at Giannis doesn’t actually solve much here. For you Dario Saric folks you also see Ayton on the floor for most of this
3rd quarter, Phoenix got it going again offensively but on the other end they continue to get killed by PnR
You see below, even when Giannis starts out from 30 feet, he’s doing a better job making sure he has a mismatch first. Crowder sits right on the free throw line so Giannis has the kick out to Middleton if he wants it.
You already saw that terrible pass from CP leading to Ayton’s 4th foul that so then the Suns go small & switch to a 2-1-2 zone, which is susceptible to corner 3s and has a soft spot in the dunker like all zones.
Milwaukee continues to get to their spots with PnR & timely cuts & just like they did to the man defense with Ayton out there.
You see around the 6:30 mark in the quarter, Jrue hitting all the open jumpers he missed in Phoenix
At 2:50 mark you see Giannis gets loose.
He gets a cross-match in transition twice
Rolls to the rim & ducks in for the post up like Ayton has been doing
Hunts Cam Payne on the switch & waits for the help since he’s a little winded
Just much smarter basketball than those isos at 30 feet out against the defense’s primary defender we used to get from Giannis & Khris.
Milwaukee forcing Phoenix to answer the exact same questions that Milwaukee has to answer defensively
You switch that Khris-Giannis PnR, Khris can blowby Ayton or Giannis can victimize crowder/Bridges.
You put Ayton/Crowder in drop, Khris walks into open jumpers.
You trap Khris and it’s a dump off to Giannis.
You zone and they have shooters 1-4 and know how to properly cut.
In between all of that, Milwaukee is pushing the pace to get cross matches in transition & Giannis is making quick moves when he gets it 15 feet out.
So both teams are between a rock & a hard place defensively. Add all of this up & we have the shootout that it looked like we were going to have after G1.
Both teams have drop bigs & 1 or 2 weak perimeter defenders out there at all times so they have to concede SOMETHING defensively.
No series or in-game lead is safe in this one. Even if Phoenix goes up 3-1 tonight you can’t dig Milwaukee’s grave.
