Expanded CFP will kill all bowl games. Do people even really watch non CFP games anymore? Especially with the dip in quality with all the pro potential players sitting out.

I’m watching the VT game (yea idk why either :lol) this game sucks. VTs QB is just running around not even looking to throw.

When they had MSU-Alabama in the middle of a work day I knew the CFP was unserious.

A lot of people actually watch bowl games. The steaks aren't as high as they were in the past but it's still a good television product, the coaches like the additional practices and the players get to play in an additional game to end their careers (and get some cool stuff). I don't see the bowl games going anywhere.

I do wonder if we will ever see a player sit out of a playoff game
It's bound to happen. A team like Oregon next season plays week 0 and has 13 regular season games. If they get to the B1G title game and then CFP they'd potentially be playing in 15+ games. Saw a hypothetical they could play 18 games next season if they played a first round game and made it to the ship.

True, I'm sure a good amount of students, alum, faculty, etc. + teams with national brands (I.E. ND and SC) will still watch their teams games in early bowl games. Plus with TV and sponsors these games will stay afloat until the losses really start to stack up.

Speaking of cool stuff, in todays game would a guy like Terrelle Pryor still be punished if he sold his bowl game memorabilia given the implementation of NIL?

ThaxbyChamblis ThaxbyChamblis I think you’re thinking of “even more teams would complain about not making the playoff”…. the players that are NFL prospects who make the CFB playoff would play, and those that don’t wouldn’t, just like now.

Wouldn’t they be doing that already?

If it were expanded we’d at least see the Keon Colemans play.

to a certain extent yeah, but I think that increasing the amount of bowls that “actually matter” further confirms that other games not in that group “don’t matter” and would emphasize that you need to look out for yourself and not risk things

Maybe I think McCaffery sat out that big bowl game or whatever even tho it wasn’t a Playoff, if it were he would’ve played. Who knows I guess.

Myles Jack didn’t just sit out a bowl game, he didn’t even rejoin his team during injury so he could prepare for the combine.

I know it's easy to be cynical when watching modern college football, especially now that the sport has become hyper focused on winning the national championship but winning bowl games is still a big deal to a lot of programs.

Even when you look at just the P5, 95% of football players are not going to play in the NFL so a bowl game is a great way to finish off your career. Also, a lot of smaller programs don't go to bowl games every year so it's not a given that they even get a chance to play.

When you see some of these programs celebrate after winning a bowl game (or how angry other guys get when they lose) you can't tell them that the game doesn't matter.
