Official Alien(s) Franchise Tread. Alien: Romulus 8/16/24

Finished up Prometheus now on to covenant and then the OG before i watch Romulus

I get it, but this reminds me of a little pet peeve of mine:

As the late Karl Bishop Weyland android in the Aliens vs. Predator video game from 2010 said, "A dying billionaire travels to a frozen wasteland. He knows his chances are slim, but he knows what he finds there could change the face of history. My ancestor, Charles Bishop Weyland."

Why do I need to play a video game to add context to a movie and make it canon? These franchises get so bloated (Star Wars being the worst offender) that asking a simple question inevitably leads to someone saying "well, ackshually..." and goes on to talk about some random chapter in a random book I'm never going to read. Another minor example: the original Predator takes place in Valverde (a common fake country used in action movies set in Central or South America). You wouldn't know unless you read the novelization, as it's never mentioned in the movie where they are.

super excited

lets go

Re-watching Alien before tonight. It’s wild watching this already knowing that Ash is an Android.

It’s funny they kept it a secret the whole movie until he freaks out. They made him sleep in the chambers as well and there’s a scene where he’s sweating so they were really selling that twist, unlike Bishop/David/Walter.

no mid/end credits so just leave when the movie ends

overall it is a great horror film, cinematography was great and i am glad i saw this in dolby theater, it really would have been a shame if they released this on vod as they first intended

for a slightly deeper dive review with spoilers…

i loved the film because its a throwback to the first two alien films and its appropriate that it slots in between, it is also the same formula but it works

the scifi part takes a backseat for more horror elements which i dont mind at all, it is intense and scary and gory, if you liked Alien and Aliens, no way you’d not love this

i can see people not liking it as it doesnt really move the franchise forward, its practically a stand alone movie, if you wanted more lore then yeah this might not be the film for that

the way it ended, they could do a sequel but i dont think its needed

acting was very good, these young actors killed it

my only negative is the cgi, i think they could have done better, looked like one of those deepfake things

and that ending/final act was kind of mindblowing, its again a copy of the OGs where you think its over but no its not… the alien looking like an engineer before they discovered the gym but seeing the baby face definitely caught me off guard

Saw Romulus today.

Not bad, but very underwhelming to me.

Anyone expecting a return to 70s/80s Alien glory will be disappointed imo.

It’s basically your typical 2024 style horror movie—young, pretty and very mediocre actors doing what they can with a fairly unoriginal screenplay.

That being said, it’s pretty well done and has some great scenes.

really? interesting…

i thought the actors were great

isabela, cailee and especially david were great

Same. A lot to unpack but overall 8.5/10 for me.

Very strong 7/8 from me. I loved the callbacks but could see how others would have an issue.

like having Rook look just like Ash. Or the alien human hybrid like in resurrection (although I think it was done much better here). Bringing back the goo from Prometheus was a choice but again, worked really well for the story.

The guy playing Andy killed it. From being weak and timid to becoming a badass. I cheered when the ******* cousin died. And the zero G acid scene? Brilliant.

I watched a recap video of the previous movies and they pointed out Ripley had on some high top white and red Reeboks. I never noticed it before. Keep your eyes open for them in the new movie as well.

you cant really miss it in the film

it has a prominent shot

I'm going to check it out tomorrow. Can't wait. David Jonsson (Andy) is great, and from what i hear he didn't disappoint in Romulus.
