How are the free events triggered?  I went into a lobby and didn't see nothing.

They trigger randomly in the lobby. They are pretty frequent. You should see a countdown clock for whatever event is coming up.

San Andreas was king tho, taking over hoods and protecting your turf was a game in itself.

Yeah there is bounties still. What I like to do is have a few people hop on the train and place bounties on each other. Depending on the lobby we get people to chase the train and try and claim the bounty.
