Official Jazz thread

Pete Rock used a sample from this song for A Tribe Called Quest's We Got The Jazz. Low End Theory is one of my top 5 albums of all time. This version of the song is dope too.

After posting the song from Lucky Thompson, had to post it...Song is 21 years old & I still listen to this & the whole album constantly. I've worn the CDs out so much that's I'm on my 4th copy...

I just found this record a few weeks ago when I went out digging. It was recorded live at Cook County Jail for the inmates.Pretty much anything with the Jimmy McGriff,Lucky Thompson,O'Donel Levy combo on the Groove Merchant label is GOLD.

Was in the library today studying and got bored so walked around and ran across this. Skipped through it reading a few chapters here and there and it is really good.
Goes over his whole life. I never knew too much about his personal life, like didn't know he was married to Cicely Tyson

What up Wes. Miles definitely lived an interesting life. Besides being a genius musician, he was an accomplished painter too. There's actually two bio pics being done right now, one by George Tilman who directed the Biggie pic Notorious & another being produced by Don Cheadle. Tilman's pic seems to be a straight bio pic but I think Cheadle's sounds more interesting. It's based during Miles' life in the 70s when he became an addict & stopped playing trumpet/music for years. During this period, there were constant rumours of him dying. In the flick Mo Better Blues, there was a period towards the end where Denzel's Bleek Gilliam became a hermit & didn't play his horn. This was loosely based on Miles during the 70s. Interested to see what comes out of both efforts.

BTW, a while ago you posted that you knew someone who was the nephew of Roy Ayers. I started this thread, link here about a documentary about him coming later this year. It looks really good. I also posted segments from Bobbito Gracia & Questlove from the Roots waxing poetic about Ayers which was taken from the film. Check it out...

My dad said that he would play concerts with his back facing the audience and sometimes just walk off in the middle of a song

. I saw that Cheadle is turning it into a Gangster type of film, looks interesting.

And yeah a good friend of mine from high school is either his nephew or cousin, don't really remember. But that's pretty awesome. I'll have to look through the whole thread later.

I also created a thread for a new Bob Marley doc coming later this year too, link here. Check it out if you like Marley. Posting some Coltrane Acknowledgement Part 1 from A Love Supreme for Sunday morning.

This is more funk but I wanted to post this. There's a remix of this featuring Talib Kweli too.

I don't know how I missed that Roy Ayers thread.

I'm a HUGE fan of his.

That documentary looks great.

Ruxxx - check out his website which I linked in the thread. It's got good content. I'm really looking forward to that doc. I can't wait until that & the Marley doc comes...

This band "interprets" a lot of other artist's songs but they do them well...

My bad, thought I left the text there. But the Soulive track, never heard of them.

They've been around for 10+ years. My brother & I saw them in a movie theater that was redone as a music venue. Robert Randolf opened for them & he was unknown then. I sat with my jaw open during his set. Of course Soulive shredded the place too. Got to see hippy white folks do their funny dances. Had me rolling.

They did this song also with the chick that recorded with them in the studio. She blew me away...I know you like vocals so let me know what you think of this...

This is the song that first turned me onto them. I also saw them play in one of The Roots summer picnic concerts in Philly a couple of years ago...

Her name is Stephanie McKay. The link to her wikipedia page is here. I think I might have one of her CDs somewhere but I think it's boxed up...
