. Kemp or Ethier cant field like Druw.

Braves were tired from that 17 inning game on Sunday and then having to fly from East Coast to West Coast.

Tonight you'll see the Rookie of the Year Jair Jurrjens.
You seriously need to book a room with 'Druw' already, it's getting kinda weird now.

Stop the excuses, Kuroda came to pitch and the Braves came to sit and watch - easy as that.
Braves Stuck In The Middle
By Tim Dierkes [July 8 at 4:50pm CST]

MLB.com's Mark Bowman writes about the Braves' trade deadline situation at the Trade Talk blog. The Braves are in that gray area between sellers and buyers at six games out.

Bowman says Braves GM Frank Wren isn't finding a reasonable deal for a power-hitting outfielder, but he's also disappointed by the Mark Teixeira market. Bowman believes the picture will be clearer and the offers better a few weeks from now. He adds that the Braves would seek a first baseman in a Teixeira trade. Perhaps James Loney, Casey Kotchman, or Kevin Youkilis would work.

If the Braves buy, Xavier Nady is one possibility. Bowman wonders if the Bucs could look to reacquire Brent Lillibridge.

Mailbag: Why did Penny keep pitching?

Beat reporter Ken Gurnick answers Dodgers fans' questions

When Rafael Furcal hurt his ankle last year, he didn't rest and heal. This year, Brad Penny's arm was bothering him and they kept putting him out there. I don't get this philosophy.
-- Kevin W., Los Angeles, Calif.

A fair question. If Sandy Koufax had shut it down every time his arm was sore, you'd have never heard of him. You know about two injured players because they couldn't play successfully through the injuries. You don't know about the ones that are successfully playing through injuries, but the trainer's room is full of them. There's only one way to find out if you can or can't do it, and that's to try. Last year, Furcal was told the only way his ankle would heal was with three months rest. Can you imagine the uproar if he sat out half the season with a sprained ankle? He wasn't as good as he would have been if healthy. But even at 70 percent, he was a lot better than anybody that would have replaced him, as is being proved currently.

Since Ned Colletti has been general manager, can you name me one trade or one acquisition he has made that is a bona fide success and accomplished more than was expected?
-- Tom K., Lexington, Ky.

Definitely Takashi Saito, maybe Rafael Furcal and Andre Ethier. Greg Maddux and Marlon Anderson were solid additions. Most of his moves haven't worked the way he planned. On the other hand, he decided to make all these moves within the context of not trading any of the team's top prospects. That's probably why the moves haven't worked. But he's kept the nucleus of the current club. He sort of tied one of his own hands behind his back. Chances are, his moves would have had greater immediate impact had he been willing to trade Matt Kemp, James Loney, Jonathan Broxton, etc., and for all we know, he might have wanted to do it a different way but was only following orders to try to win and rebuild at the same time.

My biggest criticism of the Dodgers is that they think you can do it both ways at the same time. And from my experience, you can't without getting extremely lucky. You must be willing to commit one way or the other and take your lumps if you truly believe in the kids.

Since he has been a Dodger, what kind of run support has Derek Lowe received?
-- Tom S., Raleigh, N.C.

Lowe is 46-45 since he joined the Dodgers. Of those 45 losses, the Dodgers have been shut out in 10 and held to one run in 14 others. His run support in the 45 losses is 2.17 runs per game.

I picked up Chan Ho Park in my fantasy league after reading that he's throwing 95 mph and would be part of a six-man rotation, but now see he will be displaced when Brad Penny's back. Now I see he's a reliever who is an emergency starter. Do you see this guy being in the second-half rotation or is he too brittle, and are there too many guys ahead of him?
-- Peter O., Monterrey Park, Calif.

His role actually is swingman, because he has the versatility and experience to start or relieve. The fantasy world tends not to place the same importance on long relief (keeping a game close and winnable, saving the rest of the bullpen, etc.) that Major League managers do. An argument could be made that Park has been the most valuable pitcher on the staff for purposes of a team winning games, which, of course, is not the primary consideration for fantasy baseball.

Why haven't the Dodgers traded for Jack Wilson yet?
-- Sam S., Las Vegas, Nev.

I'm not saying they won't, but now that they've finally got Nomar Garciaparra back on the field, why not see if he still has the skills to play his original position and can stay healthy doing it? Garciaparra has his doubters on both counts, but he knows how to rise to the occasion when his body allows, as he showed two years ago when he won the comeback player of the year award. Management has three weeks until the trade deadline, and that should provide a good trial.

Game time less than 1 hour away, lets get it!!!

Whatever the reason may be I'm glad someone nixed that CC trade. Why trade away a good nucleus (assuming Kemp, Brox/Pitcher, and Laroche) for players thatyou can acquire in the offseason without giving anyone up or that if you do trade for them, more than likely they will walk.

Bad outing by Bills.

Kemp as a leadoff isn't a goodlook, 3 strike outs & he's still being fooled by breaking balls.

laugh.gif
Andruw Jones looking at strike 3, he had his eye following the pitch till it went in the catchers mit, did he forget he had a bat?

Not a good game with d'backs winning.

Braves won and you saw Jair Jurrjens Rookie of the Year pitch a brilliant game.

Report: Dodgers promote Mattingly

Current coach Easler to be dismissed at All-Star break
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers have decided to replace hitting coach Mike Easler with Don Mattingly at the All-Star Break, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
Mattingly originally was hired by manager Joe Torre to be the Dodgers' hitting coach after he lost the competition to replace Torre as Yankees manager to Joe Girardi.

But Mattingly soon backed out of the position because of family issues and accepted a reduced role as a special hitting instructor who spent time with the club in Spring Training and on occasional Midwest trips. Mattingly was on Torre's coaching staff with the Yankees.

Easler is the Dodgers' eighth hitting coach in the last 10 seasons.

Sorry Mike. Someone needs to teach Matt Kemp how to lay off those breaking balls.

Maybe Torre will call up Mattingly's son when they get to the September call-ups.

Truth.

Finally though, it was about time. Next up: Honeycutt - pack it up buddy.

As for Preston, last I heard he was doing pretty bad in the minors and the organization was worried he wouldn't pan out.

@ Mfresh, this dude really trips me out.

Next up: The Marlins.

Marlins a good young team, we cannot overlook them.

Bye Mfresh, you can leave now.

Great pitching by Lowe, he's worked on his mechanics - as you can see by all his groundballs.

This team looks like they're finally coming together.

What's up with Atlanta getting worked by Kuroda and Lowe.... 2 games in ONE series with no hitters through 7 innings.
laugh.gif

We could've easily seen 2 no hitters this week.

And Matt Kemp's homerun

You don't throw a hanging fastballin the middle to Kemp.
Is Matt Kemp overrated?
by Dave Cameron - July 10, 2008 · Filed under Daily Graphings

With the trade deadline just a few weeks away and the C.C. Sabathia and Rich Harden moves thrusting the spotlight back on the veterans-for-young-players deals, one name comes up time and time again in regards to the Los Angeles Dodgers - Matt Kemp. Loved by some and loathed by others, the divide between those two camps on Kemp's value is astronomical. So, which polarizing position is closer to the truth? Is Kemp an all-star slugger in the making, or is he simply a guy who coasts by on natural ability and will never live up to his potential?

Most Dodger fans online are firmly in the first camp. Despite not being given regular playing time and having to force his way into the line-up, Kemp hit .342/.373/.521 as a 22-year-old last year, cementing his status as one of the Dodgers best hitters in the '07 campaign. However, that .894 OPS was built on a house of cards - a remarkable .417 batting average on balls in play that was in no way repeatable. Even though BABIP for hitters is indeed influenced by skill, and they do have control over whether their balls in play become hits or not, there are still upper and lower bounds on what is actually skill and what is noise. Even the very best BABIP-skill guys post numbers in the .350 to .360 range over significant samples, so it was pretty obvious that Kemp wasn't going to be able to sustain that performance.

Indeed, his BABIP has fallen to a still-high .380, and thanks to a simultaneous increase in strikeouts, his overall performance has taken a pretty big step back. In fact, Kemp's contact rate has become a real problem, as he's now posting a 30.4% K%. Among hitters who have a K% of 30% or higher, he's the only one who doesn't walk at least 10% of the time and he has the lowest Isolated Slugging Percentage of the group as well, coming in at .149.

Striking out a lot is okay if you also draw a bunch of walks and hit for power, but Kemp isn't off-setting the swings and misses with enough positives, and as such, he's a below average major league hitter right now. Considering he turns 24 in a few months and doesn't offer much in the way of defensive value, that's something of a problem.

Despite his physique, Kemp's power remains more of the doubles variety, and his aggressive approach at the plate only works if he makes up for all the bad swings with long drives that fly over the wall. The "he's young" thing only works for so long, and Kemp is rapidly getting to the point where he needs to produce at the plate, because when he's a below average hitter, he's not helping anyone win baseball games.

This isn't to say the Dodgers should dump him the first chance they get, but if LA does trade Kemp in the next few weeks, beware the narrative that they're giving up a young star. They're giving up a guy with potential, but the jury is definitely still out on whether he's going to fulfill it or not.
Phillies Like Burnett, Lowe
By Tim Dierkes [July 10 at 12:58pm CST]

12:58pm: Jeff Blair of The Globe and Mail has details on the Phillies' pursuit of Burnett. He says the Jays are scouting the Phils' Double A club, and like Greg Golson, Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson, Jason Donald, and Brad Harman. It seems that Carrasco, Golson, or Marson would have to be in a deal. Blair says the Phillies might try to convince Burnett not to opt out of his contract so he can remain near his Baltimore home for the 2009-10 seasons.

Additionally, the Phillies inquired about Derek Lowe's availability with the Dodgers.

11:46am: Pitching and hitting...two things you need to win baseball games. Insightful, eh? The Philles are looking for both - manager Charlie Manuel wants a "blue-chip pitcher" as well as a "good bat."

Pitching is the team's priority. David Murphy bandies about names like A.J. Burnett, Roy Oswalt, and Erik Bedard. Or the Phillies could look to the B list, like they did last year when they acquired Kyle Lohse. Lohse, by the way, wasn't a fan of the "B list" comment by Pat Gillick.

So who's on the '08 B list? I'll suggest Bronson Arroyo, Joe Blanton, Boof Bonser, Greg Maddux, Randy Wolf, Jarrod Washburn, Odalis Perez, Jason Marquis, Tim Redding, and Paul Byrd. Most of these guys appeared on my June 4th look at the starting pitching market. I'll try to revisit that list this afternoon with a fresh post.

On the hitting side, the Phillies don't have an obvious position to upgrade. Thoughts?
