I hate the stats pushing of this era. People don't take team make up or positions into play.
It's he " averages more assist and rebounds better " so he has to be the better player. The same mindset that has people saying Russ is better then curry. Stats ain't everything.

If we're subscribing to the "do more with less" criteria that seems to be popular...doesn't Mitchell make the best case?
Then are we going to retroactively take brogdons award away and give it to saric, who was the best player on the team even after embiid went down and had better #s.

Anyway the worse team argument is stupid. So because the Jazz don’t have a GM better than Colangelo, Mitchell should be ROTY. Because the sixers have planned ahead and have a better plan

TJ mcconnell as the PG took the sixers to 28 wins with Embiid. Simmons has them at 50+. The sixers without Simmons aren’t getting to 50 wins regardless of how good embiid is

Josh Hart on Donovan Mitchell

“Don is very crafty. I think that’s the biggest thing with him. You don’t realize how crafty he is,” Hart explained, according to Harrison Faigen of Lakers Nation. “He’s a top offensive talent in the league. He’s proven that. He’s had 40-point games, he’s the leading scorer of a playoff team, and for a lot of the year carried a playoff team in his rookie year.

“Judging him on his body of work this season, he definitely (belongs in the same conversation as Harden and James). And he has the potential to be a great player in the league.”

Being the number one scorer on a playoff team in the west as a rookie is insane.
Or you know the team isn’t constructed well and also the west is weaker than people wanna push all the time. Thunder, Kawhi less Spurs, wolves etc. those don’t strike me as strong teams. The 4-8 of the west and 5-8 of the East are all comparable

How is he a rookie? He’s had NBA strength training, NBA conditioning, NBA meal prep, got used to NBA travel was playing with them. It goes on and on. Ben Simmons is not a rookie.

Agree with this, gets brought up every year

Up to the nba to decide and make a change where if you’re drafted and decide to sit, get injured, etc that your next season doesn’t count as a rookie season especially for the award

This race reminds me of smell vs Lebron in 03 except Simmons has just been nasty outside of not being an actual rookie.

Simmons if it was his rookie year, he’s winner hands down but yea silver needs to do something

That criteria is terrible in the first place, and no. Mitchell landed in the best possible situation for himself. "Here Donovan, we need you to take the ball and shoot. We'll just be over here playing great defense."

Ben's situation is also great. But comparing "more with less" is such a dumb road to go down. Donovan and Ben are great. Period. You don't need to twist yourself into knots to say someone is in a bad situation to prove their greatness. (using the "royal you" here)

He has a broken foot and wasn’t clear to start activities until March. So that’s 7 months of down time. Meanwhile college players are playing that entire time. And let’s not act like too div 1 teams don’t have great facilities

There’s no comparison to being on an NBA roster to playing college basketball.

Different terminology. Different environments.
