It was so unfortunate I payed to go to the rangers game tonight. SMH. People were chanting fire sather, lets go mets, lets go yankees, and most importantly...WE S U C K.
 
^ LOL well, I got 2 tickets on stubhub for $22 a piece in section 118. Couldn't really pass that up, but I should have lol. I try to go to like 5 home games a year. This was only my second though, the other one I was at was opening night. I also go to all three at the Rock. Always fun to go to away games at the Rock and mess with the debbie fans. Ranger fans take over that building when they play.

The Washington Capitals are reportedly seeking a second-line center and a top-four defenseman in the trade market, The Fourth Period reports, and they may swap players with the St. Louis Blues.

The Caps are talking to the Blues, as well as several other teams. We know the Blues have pieces they're willing to give up: Defensemen Darryl Sydor and Carlo Colaiacovo are on the market, as is C Jay McClement.

In addition, one interesting trade might involve goalies. The Blues have two veteran goalies -- Chris Mason and Ty Conklin -- both of whom might give the Caps security going into the playoffs with the recently injured Semyon Varlamov. Meanwhile, the Caps have young goalie prospects to spare -- something the Blues have been looking for. So a deal might involve skater, but also some netminders.

Dion Phaneuf might be headed to the Boston Bruins, as "multiple sources" told Hendricks Hockey that the Flames and Bruins have talked about the potential deal.

Now, this might be a touchy topic because that's the same site that reported Phaneuf asked for a trade, only to have GM Darryl Sutter deny it.

But the New York Post reported the Flames are "desperate" to move Phaneuf and his $6.5 million annual cap hit, so Sutter might've been playing this one close to the vest. Meanwhile, the Bruins have the pieces to acquire Phaneuf, including a plethora of draft picks. They won't trade the 2010 first rounder they got from Toronto, but they may be open to dealing their own first rounder.

The Toronto Maple Leafs might be getting the most calls regarding Alexei Ponikarovsky in the trade market.

That's what the Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons concluded after talking to a handful of agents, but that move will probably come after the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Matt Stajan may not be yielding enough for the Leafs to move him. Simmons says he won't be overvalued by clubs that regularly scout him.

Niklas Hagman may also be drawing some interest, but there's no update on that situation. We already know Jamal Mayers and Garnet Exelby are looking for their own trades. And we know the Leafs are offering to take on bad salaries -- for a first round pick. But most feel Ponikarovsky, Hagman and Stajan will probably yield nothing better than a second-round pick, if that.

Usually GMs are more cryptic about their deadline plans, but Senators GM Bryan Murray made it quite clear what he plans on doing.

"There's no chance of acquiring a player that makes any amount of money, so (the media) can have a break on that day -- you won't have to worry about calling my office," he told the Ottawa Citizen. "Maybe somebody will call me ... who knows? At this point in time, I'm not anticipating very much."

If there is a trade, it would have to be one that swaps contracts because the Sens are right up against the cap. But if there were a trade, Murray outlined what it would look like.

"If you were going to do something, it has to involve, like a lot of teams, mind you, it has to involve equal money going out as coming in," he told the Citizen. "Those deals seem to be very hard to make at this point."

llya Kovalchuk suitors got some interesting news from Thrashers GM Don Waddell yesterday. USA Today's Kevin Allen reports that the Thrashers will not give any team permission to speak to Kovalchuk or his agent, which means teams will blindly be trading for Kovy without knowing their chances of re-signing him in the offseason.

It might also mean Kovy's trade value just dropped significantly, because he is now a three-month rental. (Right now, the demands are a player, a prospect and a draft pick.) It may not be a huge difference, since Kovalchuk did say he would test the free agent market, but a team -- say, the Bruins -- may drop out of trade talks because they may have wanted to feel out Kovy's interest in staying before trading for him.

ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun wrote that the Bruins, along with the Los Angeles Kings, are favorite to land Kovy. The Atlanta Thrashers will most definitely trade a goalie before the deadline. Kari Lehtonen will be back with the team next week after being injured all season, but the Thrashers also have Johan Hedberg and Ondrej Pavelec so the most prominent buzz is that Lehtonen will be dealt.

GM Don Waddell has made clear that he isn't carrying three goalies, and he told the Atlanta Journal-Consitution that he prefers to trade one of his three netminders.

Chances are, the Thrashers will try to deal the younger two goalies, Lehtonen or Pavelec -- they'll pick one to be their future goalie and the other to use as trade bait. Pavelec has proved himself to be a capable No. 1, so he might be getting the nod. Lehtonen will surely draw interest, but several goalies are on the market so it might be a tough task to get a good yield from a Lehtonen swap.

But the Devils might have to convince Niedermayer to waive his no-trade clause -- something he might be willing to do, despite some buzz that he wants to retire a Duck.

The Orange County Register writes that he isn't destined for New Jersey, though, and that the Ducks could still be buyers at the deadline. If that's the case, the Ducks' captain isn't going anywhere.

Previously, the New York Post writes that the Ducks have "turned serious about getting something for defenseman Scott Niedermayer, after saying 'never' talk earlier." We'll keep you posted on this one.

But GM George McPhee told USA Today that, if the trade deadline were tomorrow, he wouldn't make any moves. He did concede that a month from now, things might be different. "Different" might mean he finds out

The Stars have indicated they're not interested in re-signing him, and may be actively pursuing a younger goalie. Also, the Caps are talking to the Blues, and we know the Blues have two veteran goalies -- including the playoff tested Ty Conklin -- that they might part with.

The Boston Bruins are reportedly shopping around Tim Thomas quietly, but a trade is unlikely for several reasons.

This rumor comes from a HockeyLeaks.com source, and it isn't completely out of the blue. Most knew that Thomas would be headed out at some point, given the emergence of Tuukka Rask. But if this is true, GM Peter Chiarelli has a lot of hurdles to jump.

First off, Thomas is a $5 million cap hit and he's signed through 2013; he's already 35 years old. Also, Thomas has a no-trade clause and he might not waive it. And lastly, it seems almost every other goalie in the NHL is no the trading block, which might mean the Bruins won't get a great return for Thomas.

But it's clear the Bruins think Rask is their future -- or maybe even their present. There has been buzz that they are not willing to give up Rask in any trade, even one involving Ilya Kovalchuk.

Garnet Exelby became the second player in two days to ask Leafs GM Brian Burke if it's OK so seek a trade for himself. Jamal Mayers did so earlier this week, and now Exelby and his agent will be also be looking for teams that want to acquire a physical defenseman like himself.

Burke told SportingNews.com, "He's asked to keep [a trade] in mind. I'm not offended by that. He's in the last year of his deal. ... He'd like to stay, he just wants to play."

Burke is shopping a handful of players, outside the guys who are seeking trades themselves. In these trades, he might be looking for picks or prospects.

Backstrom will be a restricted free agent after the season, but he has indicated he wants to stay in Washington. A league source told The Fourth Period that neither side is rushing the deal, although they have touched on the matter.

The Caps already signed Alexander Semin to a one-year $6 million deal, but they will certainly be looking to sign Backstrom to a longer term. CALGARY, AB -- After the rumor mill started spinning at full force earlier this week, Dion Phaneuf was quick to shoot down any speculation that he wanted out of the Calgary Flames organization.

"I've never asked for a trade and I'm very happy here," Phaneuf said on Friday morning. "That hasn't even crossed my mind. For you to be asking these questions today, it's a huge surprise but I understand you have to report on it."

The speculation started when a fan site, Hendricks Hockey, reported that the blueliner was unhappy in Calgary and asked general manager Darryl Sutter for a trade.The information given by blogger Randy Workman stated "I have confirmation from a confidential source that Dion has requested a trade. The Flames will only do this deal if they get what Sutter wants. Keep in mind that Sutter is in charge and he is not obligated to trade Dion and will only do so if it is beneficial to the Flames."

Despite not naming the apparent source or confirmation from the club, the rumor spread like wild fire through Twitter, a social media network, and has been circulating ever since.
Phaneuf was quick to point out that fans are free to speculate but more often than not, it's just that and there's very little, if any, truth behind rumors.

"Those are people sitting behind a computer and writing what they'd like to see happen with our team,'' Phaneuf said. ''Each and everyone has their opinion and I respect that but with regards to any talk of a trade request, this is the first I've heard of it and I'm not going to say much about that."

Phaneuf has recorded eight goals and 18 points in 43 games this season. After a shaky start to the season that saw him go several games with a minus rating, Phaneuf has really picked up his defensive game and has risen a plus-3 rating.

Sutter also chimed in on the rumor, saying that moving Phaneuf wasn't even a possibility for him.

"Whoever makes up that stuff is not doing anything," Sutter told the Calgary Herald. "We've worked really hard at building a top young defence in the league and our intention is to keep them, so that's (rumours) just from somebody who didn't have anything to do on that day."

Sutter also spoke with ESPN.com on Thursday, telling them there was definite interest in not only Phaneuf but the entire defense corps, but the Flames blueliners weren't going anywhere.

"We get calls about our defencemen,'' Sutter told ESPN.com. ''Teams think that we have seven or eight guys that are playing good and they think you have one available. But there isn't one (available)."

He was asked about those who have been vocal about their desire to ship Phaneuf off and his response was stereotypical Sutter: brash and to the point.

"I say, 'Take him out of the lineup and see how much you like it,'" Sutter told ESPN.com.

"Fire Sather" has been echoing through Madison Square Garden since before the lockout, although its volume had decreased somewhat in recent seasons. It's still a rallying cry for disaffected New York Rangers fans who see GM Glen Sather as the root of most of the franchise's current evils, from the elephantine contracts to undeserving players to the alleged scapegoating of Tom Renney last spring.

If nothing else, he's seen as an executive who has managed to get the Rangers into the playoffs in four consecutive seasons but whose befuddled managerial decisions have prevented the team from really challenging for the Stanley Cup.

MikeZippo was 5 years old and a season-ticket holder when the Rangersparaded with the Cup in 1994, which makes him too young to truly knowthe decades of angst many Blueshirts fans have lived through but justold enough to remember what kind of a champion the proper allocation ofthe team's resources can produce.

Now, Zippo is championing the cause to have Slats shown the door, organizing a "Fire Sather Rally" for March 7 outside the Garden. From the official Facebook page, with close to 400 confirmed for the protest:
"Tiredof Mismanagement, Bad Contracts, being mired in Mediocrity and a lackof results? Come down to Madison Square Garden before theRangers-Sabres game, join the rally, and let Mr. Jim Dolan know thatyou want Glen Sather FIRED immediately!!!!!!"


The six exclamation points are a clear indication he means business.

TheSunday, March 7 rally will take place on the 33rd Street side ofSeventh Ave., in front of a Borders book store. He said pushing thedate into March was a necessity because of the Olympic break and thetime needed for T-shirts, signs, petitions and other considerations:"If this thing keeps growing, we're going to need permits from thepolice department."

We spoke with Zippo on Thursday to find out why Sather must be fired and what his expectations are for the Rangers fan base to rally to his cause.

Q. So why should Glen Sather be fired?

Theone thing I've laughed about is that when he was the GM in Edmonton hesaid, ‘If I had the Rangers' budget, I wouldn't lose a game.' When hecame in here, he started spending a ton of money. Brought in guys likeLindros and Holik, Bure and a bunch of other guys.

And nothingworked. We missed the playoffs for another four years, we didn't draftwell at all. I mean, in 2003, it was one of the deepest drafts in thelast 10 years, and our first-round pick was the only guy who hasn't played a game in the NHL yet.

Granted, we've made the playoffs the last four years, but we're hamstrung right now and can't make moves because we've got five guys on the team who make over $5 million. I don't know if  anyone would be stupid enough to take on Wade Redden's(notes) contract. Drury has a no-movement clause. We're basically going to be mediocre unless we can bring in new blood here.

Why has Sather been protected while coaches haven't?

Ithink it's because [owner] Jim Dolan doesn't care if the team goes toofar in the playoffs as long as the building is sold out every night andhe can raise ticket prices.

How is the "Fire Sather" rally progressing?

It's grown a little bit in the last couple of days. When I started the event on Facebook, I sent out 100 invitations. The first night we had it, we got mentioned on [the Blueshirt Banter] Internet radio showright away. Last night, it was mentioned on [ESPN] 1050 AM at about11:45 p.m., which is actually the radio home for the Rangers.

I think it's just going to keep growing.

What are the chances you can get Larry Brooks to be your keynote speaker?

God, that would be great. I don't know. I have his contact information.

Do you think this'll make a difference? The Dolans usually aren't in tune with the wants and needs of fans.

I know that Knicks fans had one for Isiah Thomas,and this is along the same lines as that -- although without thescandal he had. But he did get fired at the end of that year. That'sjust what we're looking to do. Even if they go on a winning streakright now, they aren't built to win the Cup. I think it can make adifference.

So if it's March 7 and the guys are in a playoff spot, the contention is that the team is still pretty well screwed?

I'vehad discussions with the organizers of this, and even if they go on atear we're still going to do it. The turnout probably won't be as good,but we still want to do it no matter what.

And I know that in amonth, he's going to make a stupid trade. He's gonna send away someprospects and a draft pick to try and bring in somebody.

Are you thinking about any protests inside the arena during Rangers games?

Ireally don't want to get my season tickets revoked, because I know howthey are with stuff like that. I think I'm just going to try and keepthis out of the arena.

Finally, what's your dream for the rally as far as impact?

WhenI started it, I was reading a Knicks article from a couple of years agoand they were saying there were 50-100 people there. That was the goalat first. Now, we have 360 people that are confirmed guests [onFacebook]. If we get around 200-300 people, that would be great.

I hope shopping Timmy makes him get his head out of his @%$ and start playing like a Vezina winner again.

Dion for a few picks and a Hamill/Colborne to me is way better than Wheeler/Rask/top 3 draftee for a guy whos gonna eat 20% of our cap. With Kovy, we might as well trade Chara now cause theres no way to resign him. We'd be set on offense but give up 4-5 goals a game.

Our top 6 on paper is pretty deep/talented, but theyre playing like a bunch of headless chickens.

Like someone said above, 6-13 is like a 1-2 point gap, so theres still time to light the fire. I'll be ready to call it quits if we come out like a bunch of bums on March 2nd with the whole team. Granted i dont think Ferrence is THAT important, but that would the first whole team lineup since like the first week of the season.
