I don't think the tounge really does anything at all, makes the whole collar area of the shoe completely lacking in structure making the laces take 100 percent of the job of providing support, lock down, and fit which I don't think is ever a good idea
Edit: just to be clear the shoe is good, but I would like the ability to adjust the tightness of the laces for comfort without loosing all support and lockdown in the shoe the moment I back them off even a bit
