CAREER GAME FOR JUNTHY AS RED BULL OUTPLAYS WELCOAT
Dragons drop to 0-2 despite rookie Devances 19 points in 22 minutes

Wednesday, 24 October 2007

The Red Bull Barakos might have lost some star power but certainly not the will to win.

And Junthy Valenzuela, who now assumes the leadership role after management dealt stars Lordy Tugade, Rico Villanueva and Larry Fonacier to Magnolia in two previous separate deals, displayed a lot of it.

The veteran guard was a source of inspiration for the Barakos Wednesday night, providing words of encouragement for his teammates when the breaks didn't come their way and stepping up big time when no one else would.

The 28-year-old Cebuano who is also known for his tough defense exploded with 16 of his career-high 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Barakos bounced back from Friday's loss against the Barangay Ginebra Kings with an 86-75 victory over the Welcoat Dragons in the Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Red Bull was up 73-67 when Valenzuela stole off Welcoat rookie Joe Devance and completed the play with a lay-up. After the Dragons missed on their next offensive, Valenzuela scored on a fastbreak and completed a three-point play off a foul by Denver Lopez as Red Bull ripped the game wide open, 78-67, with 5:03 remaining.

"Sa totoo lang medyo mabigat ang role ko ngayong dahil kailangan kong mag-step up para mapunan yung pagkawala nila Lordy at Larry. Pero I'm trying my best para ipakita sa mga bata na kaya naming manalo kahit wala sila, said Valenzuela who went 3-of-3 from three-point range.

Welcoat had a great game going in the first half as Devance, the top rookie draft, seemed to have picked up his rhythm early.

The 6-foot-7 Fil-Am had his finest moment in the second quarter which had him knocking shot after shot, sinking 14 of his 19 points as the Dragons completely dominated the Barakos in the quarter and returned to their locker room enjoying a 42-35 lead.

But the top rookie draft is still hurting from his sprained right ankle, forcing coach Leo Austria to play his prize rookie sparingly in the process and enabling the Barakos to take advantage.

A basket and a three by Devance midway in the third quarter gave the Dragons a 53-44 lead but things turned upside down the moment Austria pulled out his prized rookie to give him a well deserve rest.

Mick Pennisi, who finished with 12 points and Celino Cruz knocked back-to-back 3-pointers that sparked a 18-3 blast and shoved the Barakos ahead to stay, 62-56, at the end of the third quarter.

"We committed a lot of mistakes and made bad decisions in the first half. But we managed to regrouped in the third and things went smoothly from there," said Red Bull deputy coach Gee Abanilla, who called the shots for the Barakos as coach Yeng Guiao served his one-game suspension for his unsportsmanlike burst at the end of their game against Barangay Ginebra last Friday.

Devance scored 19 points and Nic Belasco, who struggled with his shots, added 17 for Welcoat which picked up its second straight loss.

The scores:

Red Bull 85 Valenzuela 27, Pennisi 12, Sharma 11, Robinson 8, Baguio 8, Cruz 5, Adriano 5, Bugia 4, Membrere 3, Hrabak 3, Najorda 0, Andaya 0.

Welcoat 75 Devance 19, Belasco 17, Reyes 11, Wainwright 10, Ibanes 6, Dulay 4, Arana 2, Baguion 2, Gelig 2, Lopez 2, Sta. Maria 0, Ballesteros 0.

Quarterscores 19-16, 35-42, 62-56, 86-75.

TALK N TEXT BOUNCES BACK WITH BIG WIN OVER GINEBRA
Cardona, Alapag, Belano, Ritualo preside over Phone Pals offense
s.

"Were a big team but we can no longer produce points just going to our big men down low. Babanggain lang sila doon. We need quick moves, quick passes and quick shots," said Pumaren.

"Our big men got the rebounds against Purefoods but they forced their shots and that sent us off track," Pumaren added.

The Pals moved well without the ball and made timely cuts as they slowly pulled away in the second half in dealing the Kings the loss.

The Kings won their first game against the Red Bull Barakos, 102-95, Friday despite missing the services of injured stars Mark Caguioa and Eric Menk.

Still without Caguioa and Menk, the Kings engaged the Pals in a toe-to-toe battle in the first half but faded away in the last two quarters.

The Pals opened a double-digit spread, 68-58, on a 16-7 opening run in the third quarter and led by as many as 18, 97-79, on torrid shooting by Belano and Ritualo in the fourth period.

Cardona paced the Pals with 20 points on 5-of-9 field goal shooting, plus 10 charities.

"Na-challenge ako kay (Ronald) Tubid. Gusto kong tapatan yung energy niya," said Cardona, the top player in the recent Fiesta Conference.

"Lumabas ang laro ni Macmac kanina kasi hindi na sya nagpipilit ng tira. I told him to change his game. Dapat malayo siya sa tao niya dahil pwede siyang bangga-banggain ngayon," said Pumaren.

The scores:

Talk N Text 111 Cardona 20, Alapag 17, Belano 17, Ritualo 13, Taulava 10, Washington 9, Carey 9, Allado 8, De Ocampo 6, Aljamal 2.

Ginebra 102 Tubid 22, Reavis 15, Salvacion 13, Mamaril 12, Macapagal 11, Artadi 10, Helterbrand 10, Holper 5, Lao 4, Aquino 0, Escalona 0, Abarrientos 0.

Quarterscores: 29-28, 52-51, 82-71, 111-102.

that was a winnable game for welcoat, they just fell in love with the 3. i think they were 5 for 27, and in the 4th, with red bull having the momentum, JDV played into their hands by launching a bunch of 3s and 20-foot jumpers, leading to long rebounds and layups. sayang naman yung 17 and 15 ni nic.

didn't get to see the TNT game, but i agree with the coach - mac mac can't flop anymore this season.. he should try and release his floater before the defense gets there. and also, even with jimmy, ren, and asi back.. he should still remain aggressive.

"did he get traded?"

- nope. he went back to the US because of some case his wife has.. and people from la tondena say it's unlikely for him to return anymore.. i sure hope he will.. hatfield's like the energizer bunny (with big muscles)..

ALASKA FINALLY BREAKS INTO WIN COLUMN
4th quarter explosion by Cariaso paces Aces in win over Tigers
2007-10-26_cariaso_4803.jpg

Willie Miller was far less explosive Friday night than he was in his first two games of the season. But he did knock a couple of big shots and came up with a crucial stop in the closing seconds to preserve Jeffrey Cariaso's gutsy effort and help Alaska get out of a slump.

The Aces, who are coming off a championship conquest in last Julys season-ending Fiesta Conference, continued to struggle under the new rules imposed by the league this new season but managed to hang on this time and beat the Coca-Cola Tigers, 98-94, for their first win in three games in the Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

With Miller having an off night, the Aces turned to Cariaso, who patiently held the team together on the strength of his experience and court savvy.

The veteran guard led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 11 in the fourth quarter to anchor Alaska's frantic charge down the stretch which enabled the Aces to overhaul an 83-76 Coca-Cola lead with under nine minutes to play.

"It's hard to win these days. The case is so frenetic. It looks like we no longer have control of the game," offered Alaska coach Tim Cone, admitting it seems hard for his team to win what has now become a fast-paced game.

"The coaches feel like they no longer have control of the game. It's like a high school game. It makes us look stupid," the American tactician said in the post-game interview.

Ronjay Enrile brought Coca-Cola back on top, 87-84, with an eight-foot jumper from the right corner with 3:26 to play. But Mike Cortez, who had 16 points and nine assists, hit a 3-pointer and Cariaso knocked another one to give Alaska a one-point lead.

Ali Peek, Coke's tireless center, completed a three-point play to tie the count at 90-all with 2:35 left but Cortez and Miller each sank a free throw and Cariaso scored on a Cortez pass as the Aces took the lead for good.

Two free throws by John Arigo pulled the Coke to within 92-94 and the Tigers made the situation scary when Reynel Hugnatan, who had 17 points, turned the ball over in Alaska's next possession.

Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn't capitalize. Rookie Ronjay Buenafe, who took the inbound, found himself working against Miller, who then gave the rookie guard no room to maneuver in the process forcing a turnover.

Miller, the reigning league MVP, came into the game averaging 34 points a night. But on Friday he managed just 11 points on a 2-of-11 shooting from the field.

Peek turned in 20 points and Arigo added 15 for Coke which evened its record to 1-1 with the loss.

The scores:

Alaska 98 Cariaso 22, Hugnatan 17, Cortez 16, Miller 11, Thoss 9, Ferriols 8, Laure 6, dela Cruz 4, Bono 3, Quinahan 2.

Coca-Cola 94 Peek 20, Arigo 15, Buenafe 14, Telan 13, Enrile 10, Calimag 10, Echavez 5, Misolas 3, Isip 2, Tolomia 2, Duremdes 0.
Quarterscores: 23-23, 51-49, 73-76, 98-94.

PUREFOODS POWERS PAST MAGNOLIA FOR SOLO LEAD
James Yap, rookie Lanete star as Giants remain only unbeaten team
s.

The Giants were still staring at a double-digit deficit at 70-80 with seven minutes left to play when Yap fuelled a 20-5 blitzkrieg to stem the tide in their favor.

The 2006 MVP winner himself clinched the win with two free throws, making it 93-90 with 1.7 ticks left.

"Its a good test. We passed it through perseverance," said Gregorio on their pulsating victory in the match marked by two technical fouls and the ejection of ace guard Roger Yap.

Roger Yap (no relation to James) was ejected midway through the second period as he hit LA Tenorio on the ribcage, sending the Magnolia guard on the floor writhing in pain.

It was a highly emotional match that also had Gregorio and Magnolia assistant coach Aboy Castro having an altercation on the way to the dugout at the half.

James Yap, the former MVP, also had eight rebounds and one assist on top of his game-high 25 points. Lanete added 16 points with 12 coming in the third period, his best game in his young pro career.

Lordy Tugade made 23 to pace the Beverage Masters who also drew double-digit outputs from Rico Villanueva, Danny Seigle, Danny Ildefonso and Dondon Hontiveros.

Magnolia gave up so much rebounds but shot well from the field to take the half at 17-36.

The Beverage Masters were hotter in the first period, shooting 69% from the field and jumping the gun on the Giants to enjoy a 31-14 spread going into the second quarter.

Magnolia dominated the opening half, though badly beaten, 17-36, in the battle off the boards.

The scores:

Purefoods 93 Yap 25, Lanete 16, Simon 13, Raymundo 11, Salvador 10, Pingris 6, Adducul 5, Yap R. 4, Yee 2, Larong 1, Sanz 0, Cablay 0.

Quarterscores: 14-31, 32-45, 66-69, 93-90

s.

"We made a little adjustment down the stretch. Good thing the zone worked, said Magnolia coach Siot Tanquingcen.

"But we're still struggling. We're still trying to get everybody in the grove specially the starters. I'm trying to give everybody their minutes but right now its not possible," he added.

Ali Peek scored 16 points and cornered 11 rebounds and rookie Ronjay Buenafe and John Arigo had 11 apiece for Coke, which picked up its second loss in three games.

Three-pointers by Chester Tolomia, Ronjay Enrile and Ricky Calimag midway in the second quarter put Coke in control 40-33.

The Tigers stretched their lead to 52-40 on free throw by Telan early in the fourth but they began to lose their grip of the lead as their shooting started to turn sour. Coke shot woeful 28 percent (6-of-21) from the field in the third and trailed Magnolia 65-62 heading to the final period. They never led again.

The scores:

Magnolia 89 -- Tugade 21, Seigle 12, Villanueva 11, Ildefonso 11, Villanueva 7, Racela 6, Hontiveros 6, Fonacier 5, Tenorio 3, Gonzales 3, Eman 2, Wilson 2.

Coca-Cola 78 Peek 16, Telan 13, Buenafe 11, Arigo 11, Tolomia 9, Calimag 7, Enrile 6, Rizada 4, Duremdes 1, Isip 0.

STA. LUCIA HAS HAD ENOUGH OF ENDGAME COLLAPSES
Realtors dominate TNT from start to finish to barge into win column
s.

The Pals committed 31 turnovers the most by any team this season. Incidentally TNT averaged only 17.7 errors in their first three games.

Jimmy Alapag, Jay Washington, Mark Cardona and Yancy de Ocampo finished in double figures but each one accounted for at least three errors.

The Realtors produced 29 points on those Talk N Text errors certainly a big boost for the team which led from start to finish.

Sta. Lucia led by as many as 25 points before carrying a 70-56 spread over into the final half.

Washington hit his stride in the third quarter, pumping in 13 points to rally the Pals to within seven at 54-61, but Mendoza and rookie Melvin Mamaclay strung up three straight triples to defuse the tension.

Another rookie Dennis Daa and Aquino took over at the start of the final period and the Realtors stayed in firm control at 81-60.

Alapag had 14 points, two assists and two rebounds in the first half numbers approximated by Ryan Reyes and Mendoza, who made 13 points and 12 rebounds together.

Reyes, however, hurt his foot and sat out the final half.

ed to impress me with his shooting lately. i kinda wish he and ren could have taken hontiveros and helterbrand's playing time on the national team, since we needed shooting way more than out of control play and overdribbling.

FERRIOLS STARS AS ALASKA SHUTS DOWN WELCOAT
Aces limit Dragons to franchise-lowest output

Sunday, 04 November 2007

John Ferriols stole the spotlight from his celebrated teammates in the third quarter, helping the Alaska Aces slaughter the Welcoat Dragons, 73-60, Sunday night in the Smart-PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.

The 6-foot-5 reserve forward was at the right time and the right place when the Aces appeared to be losing grip of the situation in the face of Welcoat's third quarter charge.

"John is the type of guy who loves to play physical and doesn't get bother by the bumps. He's such an underrated player but he really plays well defensively and can shoot from 12 to14 feet. He really pits well for this type game," said Alaska coach Tim Cone, who nearly missed the game due to a bad cold.

Ferriols made his presence felt in the lane by shooting 4-of-5 from the floor to key a decisive 16-4 run which quashed an inspired rally by the Dragons, who came back from a 10-point deficit in the first half and pulled within 43-47 on a 3-pointer by Rob Wainwright. Ferriols scored nine of his 11 points in the third.

"Tonight wasn't pretty. At this point, Alaska is pulling off the most number of ugly wins. But I'll take it," Cone said.

No thanks to their poor shooting, the two teams engaged in what would eventually become the lowest scoring game of conference so far and since Purefoods defeated Alaska, 69-64, in Roxas City on April 22, 2006.

Their combined 16 points in the fourth also went down as the lowest scoring quarter this conference.

Willie Miller, who is averaging 34 points a game in the 3-week old tournament, managed just 14 but still showed the way for Alaska which chalked up its third consecutive win in five games.

The Aces made 40 percent of their shots (31-of-76) as compared to the Dragons' 31 percent field goal shooting (21-of-67).

But it was the Aces' unselfishness and their ability to capitalize on the break that enabled them to keep their winning streak.

Alaska compiled 21 assists, 15 more than Welcoat, and enjoyed a 13-2 edge on fastbreak points. The Aces also scored 15 points on the Dragons' 23 turnovers.

Rob Wainright turned in 18 points and top rookie pick Joe Devance and Jay-R Reyes had 11 points apiece for Welcoat. Noticeably, though, Nic Belasco had another disappointing time offensive, tallying just four points as the Dragons picked up their fourth loss in five games.

The Dragons struggled offensive all night and never really threatened to take away the game from the time Alaska ended the first half with a 43-33 advantage.

Incidentally, Welcoat's 60 points was the lowest by any team this conference since Barangay Ginebra's 56-73 loss to Purefoods on March 22, 2006 and was also the Dragons' lowest output in a game since joining the league last season.

The scores:

Alaska 73 Miller 14, Ferriols 11, dela Cruz 9, Cariaso 8, Bono 6, Quinahan 6, Hugnatan 6, Cortez 6, Thoss 3, Capus 2, Cabatu 2.

Welcoat 60 Wainwright 18, Devance 11, Reyes 11, Lopez 7, Arana 6, Belasco 4, Dulay 3, Ibanes 0, Baguion 0, Sta. Maria 0, Mente 0.

Quarterscores: 15-11, 43-33, 65-51, 73-60.

Welcoat edges Talk 'N Text, 126-125
11/12/2007 | 12:57 AM

Nic Belasco drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Welcoat Dragons a stunning 126-125 overtime victory against the Talk 'N Text Phone Pals in thesecond Sunday game of the 2007-08 Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

It was just the second victory in six games for the Dragons but it will forever be part of the franchise's greatest moments.

Belasco, a former Alaska Aces player before the start of the conference, finished with 20 points, going 6-of-12 from the 3-point arc.

The Dragons Number 1 draft pick Joe Devance scored 27 points, including 13 in the third quarter when the Dragons bounced back after being down by a big margin.Point guard Froilan Baguion also tallied 20, 14 in the fourth to help Welcoat rally from 10 points down.

The Pals top point guard Jimmy Alapag, on the other hand, led the team with 27 points with Mac-Mac Cardona backing him up with 21 markers.

The game was a high scoring ball game that featured a combined 29 threes from both teams - a new all-time record.

The previous record of 28 was established during the Tivoli vs Ginebra game in 1991 and the Presto vs Alaska match in 1989.

After Alapag made two free throws to give the Phone Pals a 125-123 lead with 9.5 seconds remaining in the extra session, the Dragons quickly worked the balldown court.

Denver Lopez, who had the ball in his hands but with a phalanx of defenders crowding him with time winding down, saw Belasco open and so he quickly tossed theball to the hot-shooting forward, who then launched the game winner over the outstretched arms of Cardona just a fraction of a second before the buzzersounded.

"I don't know what to say. I've never been in this kind of situation before," offered Welcoat coach Leo Austria after the gripping ending.

"God gave us a good game. We were up against the league's No. 1 offensive team but he helped us overcome our deficiencies. All I asked the boys is toshow their big fighting heart. Tonight was a testimony to their character," Austria added.

It was a frustrating defeat for Phone Pals. They led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter and seemed to have the game wrapped up when Alapag knockedin successive threes to give TNT a 117-113 lead with 1:54 to go in overtime.

But they couldn't sustain the effort and had no answer for the Dragons' energy and big hearts.

Welcoat connected on 13 of 21 shots, including 3 of 7 from the 3-point range, in the opening quarter to trail TNT by just one point at the end of the period.

Successive threes by Denver Lopez and Belasco gave the Dragons a 40-36 lead two minutes into the second quarter. But Yousif Aljamal and Renren Ritualo answeredwith 3-pointers of their own during an 8-2 run as the Phone Pals pulled ahead, 44-42.

Two free throws by Arana made it a tied ballgame before Aljamal hit another three and Allado scored on a layup as TNT closed the quarter by outscoring Welcoat,18-7, for a 62-53 halftime advantage. - GMANews.TV
