OFFICIAL PBA THREAD

both games last night were decided by 1 point, and a lot of controversy.

in the first game, purefoods beat alaska on a no-call, and in the second, sta. lucia beat welcoat on a ticky-tack foul call with 0.6 secs left in a tie gameafter the refs had been letting them throw elbows, forearms, and bang bodies all game.

didn't get to see much of the 1st game (got to araneta at about 6), but the second game could have gone either way - just before the controversial call onj.r. reyes, ryan arana banked in a clutch 3 to tie the game. they should have let it go to overtime. (i think the refs wanted to go home) and at the end ofthe 3rd, reyes offensively goaltended a buzzer beating shot by arana that looked like it was gonna roll in. oh well. and wow, tanda na pala ni marlou, peroeffective pa rin - he had a lot of blocks and intimidations, but wouldn't even go on offense sometimes.

ADDUCUL BUZZER-BEATER WINS IT FOR PUREFOODS
But Alaska coach Tim Cone says they'll put game under protest

Romel Adducul got himself at the right spot at the right time and wound up saving the day for the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants.

The 6-foot-6 center received a pass from Kerby Raymundo in the lane with time running down and scored his only basket in the final three quarters of the game as time expired to lift the Giants to an 87-86 decision Wednesday night in the Smart-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

It was a big relief for Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio, who intensely watched the final play from the sidelines.

"I had nothing to do with that last play. But I thought my prayers were answered," offered Gregorio.

The Purefoods coach admitted he thought they had the game all wrapped up especially when the Giants opened a 19-point lead (36-17) on successive 3-pointers by James Yap and Brandon Cablay early in the second quarter.

"But Alaska has so much pride and almost turned the game around with their excellent defense," Gregorio said.

James Yap scored 23 points, Cablay added 19 and Raymundo tallied 15 and 11 rebounds - his fifth double-double in the conference -- for the Giants, who wound up the first round of eliminations with an 8-1 (win-loss) record.

Cablay, who was drafted by Alaska in 2003 and played for the Aces in his first three seasons, came up with his highest output in a game since tallying 22 for Alaska in a 105-95 win against Sta. Lucia on January 5, 2005.

Alaska coach Tim Cone, though, couldn't take the loss, noting crucial calls or non-calls during a couple of plays in the closing seconds.

"I just like to know how the refs could blow those two calls down the stretch. How can they justify that?" Cone told sportswriters after the game, referring to what he claims were crucial violations.

"That's horrible. In fairness to the league they've got to give that game to us," said Cone, adding they will place the game under protest.

Cone believed Raymundo committed a traveling violation before tossing the ball to Adducul. A few second before that, the whole Alaska bench also believed possession should have been awarded to them when Cablay, in a jumpball situation with the Aces' Sonny Thoss, ended up with the ball in his hands after the referee's toss.

When asked whether he thought Raymundo had travelled, Gregorio replied: "My eye were closed."

Undoubtedly, it was painful loss for the Aces who trailed by 17 points (48-65) late in the third quarter but rallied furiously behind Willie Miller, Jeffrey Cariaso, Mike Cortez and Reynel Hugnatan.

A 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter propelled the Aces to a 73-69 lead. They held an 86-82 lead with still 2:12 remaining but they missed crucial shots and threw away important possessions down the wire.

Miller finished with 18 points, Hugnatan and Cariaso had 15 apiece and Cortez had 12 and nine assists for Alaska which closed out its first round campaign with a 4-4 mark.

Alaska has until 12 noon of Thursday to formally file a protest with the Commissioner's Office and present the required P20,000 protest cash bond. (DBC)

STA. LUCIA NIPS WELCOAT ON ESPINO FREE THROW
Realtors even slate at 4-4 alongside with Aces
Wednesday, 21 November 2007

Sta. Lucia hit the .500 percentage mark for the first time this season as the Realtors scored their first back-to-back victories after beating the Welcoat Dragons by the thinnest of margins Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Dennis Espino nailed a charity with six-tenths of a second left, and the Realtors overcame the fierce-fighting Dragons, 84-83, to catch up with the Alaska Milk Aces at fifth place nearing the halfway point of the 2007-08 Smart PBA Philippine Cup eliminations.

"Although Dennis missed his first foul shot, I still believed he can make the second one. I believed he can bail us out, so much so that I designed our last play for him," said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez.

With the count tied at 83-all and with 4.1 ticks left, the Realtors went to their team captain who gallantly attacked the defenses of Joe Devance and Jay-R Reyes, drawing a foul in the process.

His first foul shot rimmed out but the second one hit the target, sending the Realtors to a frenzied celebration as they notched a follow-up win on their 34-point rout of the Coca-Cola Tigers the last time out.

They jacked up their record to 4-4 while stopping the Welcoat run to two games and relegating the Dragons to eighth place at 3-5.

The Dragons got back into the game on a 10-1 run capped by a Ryan Arana three-pointer that made it 83-all with 4.1 ticks to go.

The Realtors banked heavily on treys by Joseph Yeo, Kelly Williams and Denok Miranda as they reestablished control in the fourth quarter after squandering double-digit spreads in the third period.

"It was a character test for us which we survived," said Fernandez.

"We took control early but threw it away as we played their tempo. We took command again by playing our own tempo in the last quarter," Fernandez added.

Williams went 3-of-4 from the three-point area and finished with a double-double game with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Nic Belasco and Reyes had their own back-to-back games but the Dragons simply fell short in their bid to stretch their franchise-record run.

Belasco tied his career-high 23 rebounds - the most by any player this season so far. He also scored 10 points and dished out one assist.

Reyes had 17 points and 16 rebounds but ended up the goat on his last-second foul on Espino.

The Realtors shot a decent 40.8 percent from the field to neutralize the Dragons' domination off the boards.

Welcoat outrebounded Sta. Lucia, 65-44. (NC)

The scores:

Sta. Lucia 84 - Williams 18, Espino 14, Yeo 13, Miranda 10, Omolon 8, Reyes 7, Daa 6, Gonzales 5, Mamaclay 3, Aquino 0, Mendoza 0.

Welcoat 83 - Reyes 17, Lopez 15, Arana 10, Ibanes 10, Belasco 10, Gelig 8, Dulay 6, Devance 4, Baguion 3, Ballesteros 0, Sta. Maria 0, Mente 0.

Asi shipped to Tigers for Peek, top pick
By Abac Cordero

Little did Asi Taulava know that the game against Red Bull last Sunday was his last for Talk n Text.

In a move that caught people by surprise, Talk n Text traded the 6-foot-9 Taulava to Coca-Cola in exchange for fellow giant Ali Peek and a first-round draft pick for next year.

The trade was consummated Monday evening between officials of the two teams, and Taulava was informed later on by Talk n Text team manager Frankie Lim.

"I called him and said, 'Asi, we've decided to trade you. We think this is best for you and the franchise.' And his answer was 'It's okay. Don't worry boss. It's okay," said Lim.

Taulava played for eight seasons with Talk n Text, his first team in the PBA. He was taken in as a Fil-foreign player in 1999 and was briefly deported until he made a comeback in 2001.

Taulava helped Talk n Text win the 2003 All-Filipino crown, and in 2005 was suspended by the PBA for his citizenship woes. He was finally given the green light the following year.

Ricky Vargas, Talk n Text representative to the PBA board, said it was a "difficult" decision on their part, letting go of a player whose name has been synonymous to the team.

"Asi was always TnT but we had to do it for a bigger purpose. I will personally miss Asi and he will always be a friend," added Vargas of the former member of the Philippine team.

Last Saturday, Taulava was at the birthday party of teammate Patrick Fran's son. Most of the Talk n Text players were around, too, and they all had no inkling of the forthcoming trade.

"It turned out to be a farewell party for Asi because we were all there at the party," said Lim.

Taulava played his last game for Talk n Text last Sunday, but failed to carry the team past Red Bull. He went out with a bang, scoring 11 points and grabbing 19 rebounds in 37 minutes of play.

Tonight, at the Araneta Coliseum, Taulava will wear his new uniform as Coca-Cola, in the cellar with a 1-7 record, takes on Alaska in the Smart PBA Philippine Cup.

Taulava's entry is expected to inject new life on the Tigers.

"It's our problem - the center position. Although some people are saying that Asi is already slow and old, he can still be a big help for us," said Coca-Cola team manager JB Baylon.

Being traded is nothing new for Peek, the wide-bodied enforcer inside the paint. He barged into the PBA in 1998 playing for Pop Cola, was traded to Alaska and shipped to Coca-Cola.

asi played right away vs. alaska, dropping 33 and 16.

..but he only shot 9/18 from the free throw line - could have been a different game if he had hit a few frees, but nonetheless, dude still dominates the paint.

alaska was killing coke, jumped out to a 29 pt lead before coke cut it to about 8 or 9 but could get no closer (missed freethrows, while hugnatan and quinahanknocked them down for alaska)

when i first heard the trade i thought it was a lateral move for both teams, both asi&ali arent exactly spring chickens.boy, did asi prove me wrong, the manstill has alot of game left in him.coca cola on the otherhand needs jesus to turn things around.

ali isn't that bad, either, dude. just don't know how much PT there is on TNT right now.

last week vs. ginebra, kinakalabaw lang nya kahit 2 or 3 defenders sa low post.

if mark caguioa hadn't gone on a 9 pt run by himself (three 3s), coke would have won.

that was an amazing comeback..

talk n txt was up 53-29 at the half, and magnolia came back to win.

everybody seems to play well against tnt for some reason..

asi continues to dominate.. 18, 18, and 6 dimes in a win over red bull.

in 12 games played, he has a total of 154 rebounds, while nic has 151 in 10 games.. forget ppg, i'm eagerly watching the rpg battle this conference.

oh, and we should definitely go sometime, carlo.. let me know.

TAULAVA: BIG REASON WHY TIGERS ARE A DIFFERENT BREED THESE DAYS

Player of the Week December 10 to 16

Tuesday, 18 December 2007

2007-12-18_TAULAVA_4946.jpg

EVER since Asi Taulava arrived, the Coca-Cola Tigers have nearly been invincible.

The player everyone refers to as 'The Rock' again came through with solid numbers in the week that was and was unanimously chosen as the Smart Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period December 10 to 16.

This is the first time the 2003 MVP won the honor by himself this conference. He won it during his first week with the Tigers, but shared the award with Jeffrey Cariaso of Alaska.

This time, it was a no-contest.

The 6-foot-9 Fil-Tongan averaged 28.5 points and 15.5 rebounds when the Tigers went 2-0 the past week.

The 2003 league MVP scored 25 points, pulled down 13 rebounds, had seven assists and a block when Coca-Cola rallied from 15 points down in the fourth quarter to beat Magnolia 114-108 last December 12.

Playing in his ninth season in the league, Taulava then followed that brilliant performance with another superb effort the following game against Welcoat last Sunday, finishing with 32 points - 20 in the first half - on a 13-of-17 field-goal shooting including 2-of-2 from 3-point land while grabbing 18 rebounds and dishing off 3 assists.

With Taulava at the helm, the Tigers have now extended their winning streak to four games and tote a 5-8 (win-loss) record overall, a big turnaround for a team that looked hopeless when he was still not around.

Coca-Cola is now 4-1 (win-loss) since Taulava was traded by Talk 'N Text for Ali Peek and next year's first-round draft pick.

Taulava beat rookie teammate Ronjay Buenafe, Ginebra's Jay-Jay Helterbrand and Ronald Tubid, and Purefoods' James Yap for the award.

Buenafe, the rookie out of Emilio Aguinaldo College, had a career-high 23 points in the game against the Beverage Masters and had 10 points against the Dragons.

Helterbrand scored a career-high 34 points and Tubid had a personal tournament-best 27 markers - which is also his highest in a Kings uniform -- when the defending champions routed Magnolia Sunday night, 115-100.

Yap, meantime, led league-leading Purefoods to an easy 114-92 win over Air21 last Dec. 15 in Bacolod City, scoring 25 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the 3-point area.

"He just brings so much intensity to the team," said Coca-Cola coach Binky Favis of his newest Tiger.

He probably got that from playing against 'nug-nugs' growing up... Glad to hear/see that he's breaking out.

ROOKIE PLAYING LIKE A VETERAN

Player of the Week December 17 to 23

Tuesday, 25 December 2007

2007-12-23_REYES_7337.jpg

RYAN Reyes of Sta. Lucia Realty became the first rookie to win the Smart Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week, beating by a close margin teammate Kelly Williams.
The Filipino-American performed like a veteran to help the Realtors go 2-0 (win-loss) for the period December 17 to 23 as Sta. Lucia stepped up its drive to nail down one of two outright semifinals berths.
Reyes, the surprise third pick overall in last August's PBA Draft, was a key figure when Sta. Lucia defeated Alaska (101-96) last December 19 and then had a double-double against Talk 'N Text (92-91) last Sunday as the Realtors extended their winning streak to five games and improve to a third-best 9-6 win-loss record.

The ace guard scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the victory over the Aces and then followed it up with an even more impressive effort against the Phone Pals, coming through with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Reyes putting together those kinds of numbers in a matter of days indeed comes as a remarkable performance for a player who has already been sidelined because of a sprained ankle. He even injured his left ring finger in the game against Talk 'N Text but still played through the pain.

"I always give 110 percent in every game," said Reyes. "Nothing's going to stop me from giving out my best to help the team."

Although he defeated Williams for the honors, their partnership has given Sta. Lucia a big lift as the Realtors attempt to clinch its first-ever outright Final Four berth in a long while.

"It's doable," said head coach Boyet Fernandez of his Realtors securing an outright semis slot. "As long as we play like the way we played in our last five games, we have a good chance."

Aside from Williams, Reyes also beat Magnolia's Lordy Tugade and Red Bull's Cyrus Baguio for the week's top honor.
Tugade scored 30 points in Magnolia's win against Alaska in Cagayan de Oro City last Saturday while Baguio returned from a bout with chicken pox to collect 15 points and five rebounds against Welcoat last Dec. 21.

2007-12-28_aquino_7724.jpg

THE last time Sta. Lucia Realty went on a lengthy roll, it went on to win its one and only title.

Realtors coach Boyet Fernandez cannot help but continue to be in awe of his team's win streak after they came from behind to beat the Welcoat Dragons 107-93 and grab solo second-running spot Friday night in the Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The win was SLR's sixth straight, which matched the franchise's best which it previously set thrice, the last at the start of their championship run during the 2001 Governors Cup.

Dennis Espino and Marlou Aquino, two of only three players left from that 2001 championship squad, hooked up the most during a telling 13-0 run that shattered the game's last deadlock at 84 and set the team up for its 10 [sup]th[/sup] win in 16 games.

"I really have to give it to the veterans, especially Dennis and Marlou," said Fernandez. "They did a really good job."

Aquino scored seven of his eight points and Espino chipped in a basket and two assists during that surge that saw the Dragons, who led by 18 points thrice in the first half, commit five turnovers and miss all of their three field tries.

As a result, Welcoat found itself dropping to a ninth straight loss and headed for an early exit like in its first two conferences with the league last season.

The Dragons welcomed back center Jay-R Reyes, who has finally recovered enough from a left knee injury, but sorely missed was Joe De Vance, who has left for the US to fulfill his promise of marrying his long-time fiancee.

Kelly Williams scored a game-high 20 points to go with 13 rebounds, Nelbert Omolon scattered 15 of his 19 points in the second half and rookie Ryan Reyes added 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds despite early foul trouble, prompting Fernandez to cite them, too.

"All of these guys were complimenting our veterans tonight," said Fernandez. "That shows the character of this team as each one is willing to step up but be in the shadows when the situation warrants it."

Nic Belasco led Welcoat with 18 points and 13 rebounds, eight of his points coming in the third period that saw him as the lone bright spot for the Dragons.

It was the turn of rookie Ryan Arana and veteran Adonis Sta. Maria to shine in the early fourth quarter, the latter converting a short stab that tied the game up for the last time at 84, still 8:34 left.

Then Aquino had a follow-up and a three-point play and then followed Espino's own putback with a dunk that further stoked the Realtors' irrepressible charge.

The game took on an ugly turn between Fernandez and Welcoat counterpart Leo Austria when the former called a timeout in the last 27 seconds despite his team being comfortably up by nine.

The Dragons took offense and called their own timeout in the last 4.6 seconds and promptly threw the ball away when play commenced.

Fernandez said he was not disrespecting Welcoat in any way, just that he wanted his team to score and really put the game away. Austria countered by claiming his players negatively reacted to the SLR timeout and he wanted to live up to his role as team leader.

Paolo Mendoza, also a remnant of the 2001 champion squad, and Reyes were instrumental in the Realtors' comeback, with the former scattering seven points in the second period to lead his team back to within 48-59 at the half and the rookie scoring 10 points in the third.

Omolon's eight third-quarter points were also a big help as SLR even took the lead for the first time at 69-68 and went into the fourth with a 79-74 spread.

The scores:

Sta. Lucia 107 - Williams 20, Omolon 19, Reyes 12, Yeo 12, Espino 11, Mendoza 10, Aquino 8, Miranda 7, Daa 4, Coronel 2, Gonzales 2.

Welcoat 93 - Belasco 18, Arana 15, Wainwright 15, Sta. Maria 14, Dulay 13, Mente 5, Ballesteros 4, Ibanes 4, Tangkay 4, Reyes 1.
Quarterscores: 23-31, 48-59, 79-74, 107-93.

COCA-COLA ELIMINATES TALK 'N TEXT

Ex-Phone Pals Telan, Taulava do biggest damage in do-or-die win

Friday, 18 January 2008

Apparently, Asi Taulava isn't alone in his quest for redemption.

Taulava got a lot of help from Mark Telan and the two inspired stars led the Coca-Cola Tigers to an 81-73 victory against their former team that shattered to pieces the Talk 'N Text Phone Pal's campaign in the 2007-08 Smart-PBA Philippine Cup.

Telan scored a game-high 22 points on a 10-of-15 shooting and summoned all his energy in the third quarter to spark the Tigers' breakaway then worked side-by-side with Taulava in the fourth to repel TNT's fierce rallies.

telan011808.jpg

Winning their wildcard pairing, their second over the Phone Pals in three days, earned the Tigers a face-off with either defending champion Barangay Ginebra Kings or the Air 21 Express for the fourth and last quarterfinal berth on Sunday.

"We wouldn't be here without these two guys," said Coca-Cola head coach Binky Favis of his two workhorses who were highly motivated to beat their former team.

But for all their tireless efforts, the heroics of the two big fellows were nearly overshadowed by the courage and toughness of rookie Ronjay Buenafe, whose clutch hits down the stretch cushioned the impact of TNT's final comeback bid.

"Ang mentality namin ni Asi coming into the game is we really want to kill Talk 'N Text," Telan proclaimed during the post-game conference. The 6-foot-6 forward was dealt by TNT to Air21 in 2005 before he was traded him to Coca-Cola before the start of last season.

Taulava, who vowed that his team of eight seasons will pay dearly for trading him, managed just 13 points on 5-of-21 shooting but grabbed 16 rebounds as the Tigers pounded the Phone Pals off the boards, 56-47.

"I feel better. And what can I say, Mark really played great tonight. I think I was too excited to play tonight I couldn't get anything right. But I'm thankful to coach and my teammates for their patience," Taulava said. "I so happy we're (still alive) in the playoffs."

During the post-game conference, the 6-foot-9 mammoth also took the opportunity to apologize to his former bosses at TNT if he had said something that offended them and the organization.

"I might have offended some of my bosses with the way I played against Talk 'N Text. But nothing personal. I just want to prove something. I hope they understand," he said.

It was a jolting blow for the Phone Pals, who completely blew away their hopes of making the playoffs.

Mac Cardona also finished with 22 points but missed important baskets and free throws in the fourth when it mattered. Ali Peek, the only other Phone Pal in double digits in scoring, added 14 for TNT, which was held to their lowest output this conference for the second straight game.

Coke got off to a good start and built a comfortable 20-8 lead late in the first quarter.

TNT rallied to keep the game close but that was all it could do.

The Tigers held a73-65 lead with under six minutes to play but Cardona led a mighty charge by the Phone Pals, who pulled within 71-73 with 4:13 remaining.

But Buenafe hit a huge basket then made two free throws as Coke closed the game with an 8-0 run.

Scores:

Coca-Cola 81 - Telan 22, Taulava 13, Enrile 8, Arigo 7, Buenafe 6, Isip 6, Cabagnot 5, Dimaunahan 5, Tolomia 4, Calimag 3, Misolas 0.

Talk 'N Text 73 - Cardona 22, Peek 14, Washington 8, Allado 7, Ritualo 6, Alapag 5, Carey 4, Belano 4, De Ocampo 3, Aljamal 0.

Quarterscores: 23-15; 38-37; 64-57; 81-73
