Well you can't use an external HD if you don't have a computer. I don't think you'll have much of a choice. Either you get accessto a computer or bring a laptop.

and can someone school me on taking long exposure shots? I've always been interested in taking some, but never got around to learning how.

Some alternatives if you're on a tight budget: Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. Both come with lens hoods so you don't have tospend an extra $50.

Yo, you're Justin right? For long exposure shots, there's no need for fast lenses. Depending on what you'd like to shoot, wide orultra-wide angle lenses should do the job. Other things you need are a tripod and a remote shutter release to avoid vibration when triggering the shutter. Also, I suggest removing any filters you have attached to your lenses as they can result to ghosting or flare.
Photography & Camera Enthusiasts: Digital Point and Shoot Camera Suggestions?
I had the Canon SD1000, long story the screen broke (this happened a few months back), so I'm looking to purchase a new one. I'll be using it a lot, Ijust want something with quality that I'll be able to use for a good while without needing to upgrade at any time in the near future.

Price range around $300, would like a Camera that includes 1080p HDVideo Recording on the Camera.

That's tough man. For $300 I don't think to can get a camera with decent still quality and 1080p video. It's basically non-existant right now. TheCanon SX1 IS, is the closest thing but that retails at about $750 and you would have to import it from Japan through eBay. That's the only camera out rightnow with the features you want. For about $400 you can get a SX10 IS which is the same camera minus the HD video mode. Sorry I didn't help out much...

backtotheknown...i like the 2nd shot as well. I know different people see different things and as for me I'm more of a composition (and cropping) kind of guy...I'm not a pro, just commenting based on my own opinion. (no ebayologist...

) I cant show you what I mean because i dont have PS in my work computer, but if you crop the pic right below the number 2 (where its unfocused) and just before the end of the sleeve on his left arm.

So a camera like this has 1080p HD capabilities for pictures only correct?

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08012305sonyh10.asphttp://www.dpreview.com/n.../0801/08012305sonyh10.asp

Is there a Canon that you would suggest again in that 300 $#@ price range that would have those capabilities for images?

^ Correct. That camera just has a mode where the picture will be processed by the camera (cropped and resized) to "1080p" the video mode is still640x480 max. Technically, any camera with 8 or more megapixels can give you "1080p" images. They actually produce images around 4000x3000 pixels, soyou can just crop and resize via post processing to make it 1080p if that's what you want. For $300 I'd recommend a Canon Powershot S5 IS, a used CanonPowershot G9 maybe. There are tons of options, the reason I recommend the S5 IS, is because it's good for pictures but also has a really nice video modefor your budget.
