Big Cars Are Killing Americans

The government can no longer allow the auto industry to treat walkers and bikers like collateral damage.

Mix bad drivers, with more traffic control, Americans bad aggressive driving, and large cars, you have a recipe for a ton of deaths.

People driving smaller cars on a large scale will save a lot of lives and probably drive down gas demand.

I understand the convenience arguments, but I don't accept them because it would be better for the country on a macro level of people weren't in these vehicles in the scale we have now

You realize you are about to make the same kind of lazy argument gun owners make regarding gun control

If you are going down the user error road, then what is the plan to improve people's driving ability regarding SUVs and other large vehicles to make them less dangerous?

I may be open to requiring people get CDLs to own an SUV.

And no matter if someone does follow the law, hitting something with a large SUV cause more damage than getting hit with a sedan. The height of the car, moving the strike higher on someone's body, will make it more deadly

This is an interesting conversation but realistically should we ever expect to see any type of regulation about the sale of the type of vehicles in question and/or who is allowed to operate them?

It’s amazing to me how Trugg ownership has paralleled gun ownership as a hallmark of cultural identity for racist America.

It used to be that even in rural areas, trucks were likely being used fairly routinely for work tasks. People still kept and used sedans for grocery trips, etc. Now everyone in the family has to own an underpowered 6 cylinder death machine to own the Libs. The whole stupid “roll coal” movement just epitomized the nonsense.

I really hoped the Millennial attitude of, “buying X isn’t a personality trait,” would catch on a bit more.

(And yes, I see the irony of posting this on a sneaker forum largely dedicated to a single brand)

I don't think it's unrealistic that there could be regulations on the maximum size of SUVs. I think SUVs and trucks have gotten entirely too big. I know I sound like a hypocrite considering I drive a large SUV. Also, I think a huge reason these things keep getting bigger is that almost every new car released is a crossover. These beltlines keep growing as a way to differentiate themselves from the crossovers.

I don't think it's unrealistic that there could be regulations on the maximum size of SUVs. I think SUVs and trucks have gotten entirely too big. I know I sound like a hypocrite considering I drive a large SUV. Also, I think a huge reason these things keep getting bigger is that almost every new car released is a crossover. These beltlines keep growing as a way to differentiate themselves from the crossovers.

Yeah, I am not advocating for the mega yachts like the Infiniti QX80, Yukon XL, Escalade ESV, FF450, Mega Cab RAM, etc. but I am not against folks pushing Expeditions, Explorers, Rovers, etc, in peace

Well I don’t have a massive SUV like that. But I enjoy driving my Mazda CX9.

I was mostly joking with you.

I understand some families need larger vehicles, and I am find with them being SUVs.

But SUVs have been getting increasingly larger and more popular and no thought has been given into the consequences of that. The differences between handling and SUV and a car safety might feel small but they play out in costly ways.

I would like at a minimum there be a upper limit on size, and require people to get extra licensing.

I am willing to accept the social cost for families needing larger cars to move around, but there are too many people that needlessly buy to oversize vehicles

Ha. I actually wish I could drive a minivan. I considered keeping my late wife's Pacifica, but I just couldn't bring myself to make it my daily driver (plus just having it was pretty painful). I just couldn't see myself being a minivan driver. It wasn't a masculinity thing. I don't know what it was.

Know this- every time we fly somewhere I cannot wait to drive a rented minivan.

Couldn’t agree more bro. In this day and age it’s super easy to put out articles that are “truthful” but are written to be more compelling by omitting information.

IMHO you have to do like 5-10 minutes more of quick, additional research to get a better idea of what’s really going on with a lot of topics. Problem is folks aren’t willing to do that go off of clickbait headlines and/or the first article they read (which may often even be one-sided and factually incomplete).

I mean an easy way to make SUVs less likely to be purchased or at least make smaller ones more popular rather than the large ones is by raising insurance premiums based on engine size like Europe does. But I know that wouldn’t fly well.

I get the car size argument, but if you really wanna get into the safety debate, I think requiring a breathalyzer in every vehicle and having a speed governor of like 85 would be more effective.

I think I will forever only drive an SUV. You can’t beat the comfort being somebody who is 6’2.

Bro you know how much I wish I could fit into like a Supra or even a compact sedan comfortably? ****. I owned a Golf for 4 years and liked it, but as soon as I started driving my fiances Rav4, it's like a whole new world opened up for me.

Now I'm looking at SUV prices vs compact sedans like a Corolla or Elantra, and doing the wildest mental gymnastics to convince myself to stay w a small car. But this freedom to not only sit up straight and not feel my hair brushing the roof of the car, but to actually go to Costco and not play jenga with the groceries is... amazing!
