Would you say you are more satisfied with current race relations within the US as compared to before Obama was president and if so, do you think he is personally responsible for positive race change in this country?

I ask cause I've seen a few in here say Obama has been the best president in decades/generations yet all the NT race threads have members saying they've never been more disgusted with race relations in this country than ever before. How could this be when the current president is black & is doing the best job of any president in generations? It doesn't make complete sense to me.

Also, it seemed when Obama was first elected for term 1, a lot of people were expecting very much from him on this issue.
Being a student of history, I never thought that President Obama would have a positive effect on race relations in the United States. I knew that they may get worse, because of how his presence affected the power of white privilege. His simply being President of The United States slapped white privilege right in the mouth, which in turn made it almost impossible for him to succeed politically. He could not do enough for Black people other than to appear steadfast, cool and strong in the face of adversity, and he still had to help pull the nation out of the deepest recession in decades, all the while trying to maintain national security. I prayed to the ancestors for this brother, and I feel that he was the perfect person to open the doors for all that will follow. To answer your question of if I am satisfied with the status of race relations in this country, well, unfortunately with the candidacy of Donald Trump, he has proven that there are some white people in this country who do not even want a woman, let alone another Black man, to hold what is supposed to be the highest office in the land, or even for me to walk across the street in the rain with a hood on. President Obama is not responsible for what White people think and do, as that is their problem.

If not Obama then who? What I mean is - how could one then expect any president to have a drastic impact on race? Or at least a positive one?

I expected nothing from him on the issue but I also do not think he is one of our best presidents either.

Thank for your response but I was honestly hoping for one that did not include Trump as the question really wasn't about him. :lol

Overall or specifically pertaining to race?

He talked about it in a way no president ever has before, see the Trayvon instance. He actually acknowledged what was going on which is more than many have done, now do I wish he would have kept it all the way [emoji]128175[/emoji] and let the yoppa sing, sure, but he is the president of all people not just black folks.

Why were you expecting him to fix or even improve drastically 400 years of feelings in 8 years?

No one cares about the emails saying she wanted to use Eric Garner to push gun control?

Can I get the actual post or more info on this. Honestly yes that would be an issue with me

Someone in the Clinton campaign sent an email asking if they should include Eric Garner death in a piece about gun violence, even though his daughter doesn't like Clinton. They referred to it as the "Erica Garner" problem. Another staffer wrote no, because Garner wasn't killed by gun violence

So a whole bunch of nothing

For me he IS one of the best because of the obstacles that laid in his path, both intentional and unintentional. He handled all with class and aplomb. This is all you can ask for considering the circumstances. He leads by example in sharp contrast to a Donald Trump. Who would you want your children to emulate if choosing between the two? That said, it should not fall upon NO Black man or woman to solve race relations in this country, because Black people did not create the issue. The issue is white privilege, and until white people are willing to be honest about how white patriarchal rule doesn't do them any favors either, there will always be that problem not only in America, but in the world.

This.

We have to make ourselves more applicable to get equal treatment, nah man it's supposed to be for all according to the founding fathers.

I dont know if its nothing. Definitely shows they care more about using events for their own interests than actual empathy for the deceased or the family.

Which isnt surprising. But just because its the norm doesny mean it should go overlooked.

Wasn't the whole Eric Garner thing caused by police violence? It doesn't make even make sense why they were thinking of going with the gun violence angle when he only got choked to death.
