***Official Political Discussion Thread***

joe manchin is really good at being a politician.

i doubt he ends up voting for it, but i dont doubt that he wants deep red west virginians to know that he's considering it.

dude is pulling a magic trick being a west virginia democrat, i respect the hustle.

Real talk, to save the planet, Dems gonna have to come to terms with the fact they might have to give the entire state of West Virginia a robust UBI, just to buy off Manchin from sinking a their environmental bill .

When the Dems take back power, Manchin finna be finessing on a level we haven't seen in a minute.

I read a couple stories about the deal was being cut, and this is didn't occur to me at the time. Like 5 mins later I was coding and I thought a about the story for a quick second and chuckled to myself "These clowns are gonna mess around a cause a recession........Then....

They really gonna put a provision in this bill that will guarantee the next recession will be even harsher than it otherwise would be. These dudes are insane.

They a seriously trying to add as much failed economic policy to this bill as possible.

I had a similar delayed reaction.

I was really tired. I'm giving a quiz and then I'm checking my laptop. My eyes are drooping, like I was Dr. Benjamin Carson, and I lazily read through the story in the Atlantic and then a minute or two later, my eyes pop out a la Mr. Ben Barson.

there are not enough buttered biscuits or packets of honey like syrup to soothe this existential pain.

But hey, severe economic downturns exacerbated by deflationary austerity are just a state of mind. b

Man just had a get together during after a training with a bunch of professionals in the tax field amongst different groups in our firm. The way everyone is criticizing this bill is hilarious. People are literally ****ting on every aspect of it that you can think of. If this passes through in its current form we’ve identified so many flaws that will helps business to redistribute profits to stockholders and for the rich to avoid the top tax rate.

This is trickle down economics 2.0 except the lower 40% will see less than 1.0% of the actual benefits if any. It’s a joke.

I was listening to something the other day that hadn't crossed my mind before.

Admittedly, I was not particularly well-versed in politics until recently, so this may be obvious to others. The gist is that the Republicans are fully aware this plan is terrible, and it is part of the "Two Santa Clause" theory.

They're going to give the most wealthy people in the country these massive benefits and blow a hole in the deficit. Then, when they (probably) lose in 2018 and 2020, they'll go back to screaming about the deficit and make it the fault of the Democratic party, and get put right back into power.

I like vox's matt yglesias's idea of moving goverment agencies from dc to places in the country that have lost manufacturing/coal jobs.

move the EPA to Kentucky, or morganstown WV.

I hate it, unless they are will to relocate and move the workers and small business around it. And compensate the DMV a ton for leaving.

Move Government agencies out of a area with he a high minority population, where federal jobs have helped create an decent affluent black population, to a nearly all white place.

Destroy MD and Virginia's economy to the benefit of the most self destructive white folk in the country.

Nahhhh

Wasn't this guy supposed to unite everyone?

Who would have thought he'd further the divide that he exploited to become president?

Dude is clearly trying desperately to deflect off his crumbling administration with the headlines regarding Mueller/Flynn

Or maybe even knows the end is near.

When I encountered the racist as a volunteer, he started to say the most extreme ish when I got up to leave. That's when dude started with his Lincoln was the worst president of all time and the slaves were freed too quick ********. In a way this reminds me of that.

Give people a stake in the system, and watch them defend it.

Office opens case file into accusation that Conway broke the law
The U.S. Office of Special Counsel is opening a case file to address allegations that White House counselor Kellyanne Conway violated federal law when she made comments about GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore's Democratic challenger.

Walter Shaub, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics, filed a complaint with the Office of Special Counsel last week alleging that Conway violated the Hatch Act, a decades-old law prohibiting federal employees from using their offices to campaign for or against political candidates.

In an email sent to Shaub on Tuesday, Ana Galindo-Marrone, the chief of the Office of Special Counsel's Hatch Act Unit, said that the office had opened a case file on the matter, as is the standard practice for such complaints.

"We have received your Hatch Act complaint and will open a case file to address this matter," she wrote.

During an appearance on Fox News last week, Conway blasted Democrat Doug Jones, whose challenging Moore in Alabama's Senate special election, saying that he's "weak on borders" and "weak on crime."

"I just want everybody to know Doug Jones, nobody ever says his name and they pretend that he’s some kind of conservative Democrat in Alabama and he’s not," she said.

Shaub, who resigned from the OGE in July, quickly slammed Conway's comments, accusing her of violating the Hatch Act by appearing in her official capacity when she made the remarks about Jones. Conway was interviewed with the White House in the background.

The White House defended Conway, denying that her comments amounted to support either for Moore or against Jones.

“Ms. Conway did not advocate for or against the election of a candidate, and specifically declined to encourage Alabamans to vote a certain way," Raj Shah, the White House principal deputy press secretary, said in a statement.

"She was speaking about issues and her support for the President’s agenda. This election is for the people of Alabama to decide.”

They actually tried that back in the 90s. Forget the exact department, but my uncle works in Info Security and they moved the department to Charleston, WV from DC. He went along with a lot of other people from the DC area (many of whom were black). Basically after a year a TON of people threatened to quit their jobs because they hated living in WV. The govt quickly realized that wasn't gonna work and they were going to lose taken, so everything got moved back to DC

America's government is pretty small compared to the population.

I support expanding the workforce a ton, and putting them in areas like WV and Ohio.

Problem is there is a brain drain in most governmental departments. The smartest people leave for private or more recently have been forced into early retirement. Last thing I’d want is to put these offices in areas where you will have 0 chance of attracting top talent. Why do most firms now move their corporate offices to large cities? Our generation now more so than before want to live in cities with large cultural experiences.
