I have some sharp words about this, but I'll save them as to not upset anyone.

This my favorite Bernie dog whistle though...

There is an argument to be made that gun control policies are nowhere near the most helpful policies to address urban gun violence. I myself would make that argument. That being said, this video wasn’t that. Bernie out here straight tripping with that nonsense :smh:

I’ll try to check out the other videos tomorrow.

I agree

General thoughts:
While I think comprehensive gun control, especially in regains to getting cheap illegal guns off the street will help, I in no way think of it as a panacea. Many politicians, pundits, and wonks often overestimate the effects mainstream "gun control" proposals with have on urban violence, by a wide margin. The violence we see in urban areas is a result of systemic failings at every level of government, compounding on each other for generations. A perfect collaboration of white supremacy and the worst unfettered capitalism has to offer. The inventions needed at a state, federal, local and community level go far beyond universal background checks and an assault weapons ban (or buyback). Even as an economist I must admit they go far beyond just economic policies too.

I think the most disappointing thing about the video (besides the dog whistle) is that he could have easily given and answer that was more in line with his economic justice message. Bernie is the same dude that has been asked questions about fighting ISIS and somehow ended up talking about the 1% robbing the country, yet he drops the ball so badly on this question.

Now this video is from 2015, and admittedly he has made a bunch of strides in his understanding and his rhetoric. However, every once in a while he says some **** that sounds like it was QA tested by problematic white people before he brought it to a general audience. That **** drives me up the wall. Famb really needs to stop and think and fight back whatever instinct that cause him to make silly **** like this.

And I think that is where I have tons of static with many Bernie supporters (not saying you), especially the ones I call Bernie Bros. Many want to see comments like these are isolated incidents that while troubling, are not a big deal when compared to all the good things he says. I see comments like those a part pattern of behavior that doesn't make Bernie a racist or bad actor, but is way more problematic that people realize. Especially since they are so off the mark, unnecessary, and so contradictory to Bernie's movement in general.

Sidenote: I must say the whole debating violence in Chicago thing has grown extremely frustrating to me with centrist and conservatives. In my real life I have a lot of right leaning people wanting to discuss politics with me. Whenever the topic of violence in Chicago, or Baltimore, or LA, or "insert any urban area" is brought up, instead of giving them a long detailed explanation as to why they are wrong, I sometimes just snap at them and say "The most violent thing going on in cities like Chicago is that we knowingly condemned millions of families to live in abject poverty for generations, never tried to help them get out of their predicament, destroyed the means for them to help themselves, routinely did things to make matters worse, then passed all the blame for the systemic failings on the victims, and blamed then for not fixing problems. Then we plunder these communities at will when we saw a way to feed, directly and indirectly, the unfettered capitalistic machine. Oh, and I haven't even touch on the racism yet. So don't talk to me about caring about violence, you don't give a **** about the real violence that goes in in these cities".

That usually makes them drop the subject real ******* quick.

Bro I literally have a book coming out on gangs and violence in Chicago in January. You just laid out the backdrop/conclusion to the book

Make sure to let us know about the drop.

Whenever I hear Chicago or Detroit quickly followed by ****hole, when discussing gun control or 2nd Amendment with political polar opposites. I usually get the sense, they really wanted to use the N-word, but self-censored because I'm outside their circle.
