No one can make any solid conclusions about what motivated the moves toward Trump for months.
Statisticians and political scientists need to parse through the polling data and conduct post-election surveys.
Some stuff will fall on Dems. But there are other considerations to take into account like considering how many mail ballots were not counted if turnout was down in some districts. Is white identity moving Latinos, how much does disinformation play a role.
No one should be pushing "I told you so takes" so soon. Especially since the main takeaway from what motivated Obama-Trump voters in 2016 (populist economics) turned out to be wrong.
At this point, we know there is an issue, we don't know what.

If anything I was confident in them taking congress. Dems clearly aren't doing enough. Should've been a landslide election in their favour.

On the State level I could definitely see certain bold AG's going after him and his crime family like in NY state but on the federal level? Never happening I'm afraid
If ever there was an argument to charge and jail a former president for criminality it would've been with the likes of Nixon and Dubya but the following administrations didn't want to look back in the name of unity and 'moving the country forward'.
It's not necessarily right or just but they all understand how much a precedent like that could affect any and all subsequent administrations given what the job entails...

Dems are out to “save the world” and change everything. People don’t want that. Ease those things in. Don’t even mention climate change but build towards stopping it. Things like that.
