I have 2 theories, which may both apply.
It’s unequivocal he was a good lawyer back then and he has always been described as hungry for fame in the spotlight.
Theory 1 is that his ego and lust for the spotlight has gone so far that he’s willing to stoop this low to remain in that spotlight.
Theory 2 is that this is what a senile version of a power and spotlight-addicted lawyer looks like
