With the death penalty. I’m in favor of it being banned just off the strength that if you execute 100 people. 99 of them could the worst of the worst, murderers, violent criminals etc who deserve it, but if you execute just 1 innocent person it’s a failure and that’s happened way more than once.

However, I won’t the fault the families of victims who were killed by violent murderers for wanting blood and wanting their relatives killer to die in the most painful way possible. I’m against the death penalty. But I can’t dismiss how the family members of a victim would be feeling.

I think prisoners should be able to choose between a life sentence or the death penalty.

Generally speaking, the death penalty needs to be ****ing banned

Like altogether, like everywhere, like no excerpts, banned

I don't support the death penalty for several reasons.

1. The justice system in this country is a joke and innocent people will die.

2. I actually think death is too lenient in clear cut cases where death may be well deserved (eg. Dylan Roof). In such cases a thousand razor blade cuts while being doused in salt water serving a life sentence maybe the way to go for the most heinous of crimes. Or maybe let those prisoners fight it out in the arena, Spartacus style.

This is a good thread I saw this morning. Definitely have noticed how folks like Nate Silver and other election analysts kind of conveniently leave out racial dynamics when discussing any assessments of politics. He brings the heat to himself oftentimes and it’s not really surprising, but you’d think that after this failed (and pretty serious, while ridiculous) coup attempt that people would slow down before saying “ah people/libs got scared for nothing!” . The danger isn’t in the fact that it didn’t happen (namely, as pointed out in this Twitter thread, prevented by organizers and lawyers who pushed back at every step of this power grab attempt) but the fact that it still can happen. People dismissing the grave danger we’re still in is par for course, but I wish we could do better in that regard. Guess we got a whole pandemic to illustrate how Americans don’t really grasp how to assess large scale risk, though.

But you just spent the last 4 years clamoring about policies that Mitch McConnell shoved through the senate?

But one of my main reasons for supporting Trump was an acknowledgement of the problematic nature an obstructive GOP-led Senate under a different administration.

Since Trump’s defeat I’ve been supporting the Dems flipping the Senate with the Ga runoffs as that is the best case scenario to avoid the GOP obstruction.

i think what Nate and others are referencing in terms of "stealing an election" is the idea that Trump would somehow overturn the electoral college results, which wasn't a likely scenario. voter suppression is used to steal elections and always needs to be considered but it's not unique to Trump's efforts

i also don't think people were getting "scared for nothing". it had to be talked about because it was clear it was going to happen once Trump lost and we needed to be ready. there are questionable mechanisms in the process, that while Trump may not have been able to exploit, a more competent person potentially could. having the discussion of what those are, and how to change them for the better is a good thing

with that said Nate is a clown with some of his trash takes. "people shouldn't be criticized for worrying that Trump might try to steal the election" - "but here are those criticisms" - "be vigilant just don't panic". thanks for the insight Nate 🤡
