I know I'm probably the only one that was interested in going to see Carrie, but it was such a disappointment.
I was worried watching trailers (which I avoided pretty vehemently). The teaser wasn't bad, showing Carrie post-prom, wrecking havoc.
Then, the full theatrical trailer came out. If you've seen the trailer, or if you've seen the original De Palma Carrie, you don't need to go see the remake. Ugh. It was almost a literal word-for-word remake. There are countless lines that are rehashed from the first. From dirty pillows to numerous biblical lines. I watched the original Carrie again after seeing the remake because I was unsure of how exactly things happened in the original. It's one of the few King adaptations that I don't go back to very often. Not because it's not good, because it's excellent, but because I just have a fondness for the others more.
The events that are portrayed in the remake are almost exactly the same as the original. There are three things that stick out in my mind as different: They have cell phones, so one of the girls (Chris) takes a video of the, "Plug it up," scene. There isn't the stinger at the end where Sue gets grabbed by Carrie. The scenes at school are volleyball and various in-place exercises in the original, while in the remake, they place volleyball in a pool, and they run instead of doing jumping jacks and pushups.
Other than that, it's exactly the same. Sue and Tommy both are trying to make up for how they treat Carrie. Chris and Billy both have a strange, strained relationship. Mrs. White is an insane religious bigot. The gym teacher does her best to make Carrie feel accommodated. But since the characters here aren't nearly as charming or ruthless or diabolical as the original, and the director isn't nearly as good as De Palma, it's boring. You had memorable actors in the original. Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, John Travolta, Nancy Allen, William Katt. Sure the remake has Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore, but honestly neither are as good as the original actors. Chloe does a fine job, but it was unnecessary so it was a tough watch.
I didn't want them to completely reimagine the film. I wanted key elements. I wanted Carrie to be pushed to the edge, and for her mother to have a troubled past. But a complete replica of the original? What's the point? I understand that it was a cash grab, but at least try to put an effort into making a different film.
Evil Dead is a great example of a film where just having the same premise makes the film acceptable as a remake. You got teenagers stuck in the middle of the woods and escaping demons and a house harder to escape than those mirror-mazes at your local fair.
Dawn of the Dead. You have peopled held up in a shopping mall for refuge, and personalities clash.
The Fly, The Last House on the Left, The Crazies, Fright Night, The Hills Have Eyes, The Thing, Halloween, The Blob, My Bloody Valentine. They all take some liberties. This film took none.
I've never seen a remake where so much has been lifted from it's source material. The closest thing is Night of the Living Dead, but even that at least had different dialogue. A line or two is fine, but the whole damn movie? It's insulting to the original, and that's why I can't recommend it. It was frustrating re-watching the original because I could see where so many things were lifted straight from this film.
Two positive notes though: Sue in this was gorgeous. I feel like I've seen her somewhere before, and she's stunning. I know she's a model as well, so it could've been somewhere, but I really wish I knew where it was I've seen her. Also, her boyfriend Tommy is a little more believable than William Katt. He seems to actually have an affection toward Carrie, moreso than Katt. They both just seemed more genuine. Other than that, the supporting cast is rather stale.
Mrs. White didn't seem as diabolical here. She just seemed crazy, and that's not really a good thing.

When I first heard Chloe was playing Carrie.. I was all in for it. Then more and more trailers came out and I had (and have) no interest in seeing it anymore. I'll prob. wait for DVD.
Primal Fear's a great movie, Norton was so solid.
I saw Maniac (with Elijah Wood) and thought it was terrible. The pacing was all over the place and there really was no point to it other than just a deranged dude doing deranged people things (yeah, I'm aware of the title of the movie
) Just didn't like it.
Also saw Simon Killer, which I thought was a bit better. It also didn't really serve any purpose, but I enjoyed the cinematography and felt the acting in that was at least a bit better.

Just finished Bad Grandpa. I liked it. Laughed a lot. It had some dry moments but that's what you expect with this type of movie. There were some scenes that had me dying.

I've heard very positive things from the horror-community about Maniac, but it's a remake of a cult film, and it has a very niche audience. It doesn't surprise me to hear that someone doesn't like it, as most of the reasons people seem to have liked it was because it catered to the genre fans.
That said, I haven't gotten around to seeing it, although I do own it. Probably won't get to it until winter sometime.
As for The Conjuring, I also bought it, but it's better to wait until it goes down in price. It's not a must-see film right away. It'll be here in a year. And much cheaper.
I'm waiting to see Bad Grandpa once it hits BD. It's not worth going to see IMO, no movies like that are. If you enjoy watching a comedy with a full theater, that's cool, and I get it, but it's not me. I'll rarely go see a comedy opening weekend. Only saw We're the Millers ebcause I had a pass to see it.
Week of Halloween watch-lists?
This past weekend I watched Carrie (De Palma), Carrie (remake), Slither, Night of the Living Dead (1990), Prince of Darkness, and The Conjuring. I probably won't get to too much before Halloween, since I work till 11 everyday this week. I'm a bit disappointed I won't get to watch Halloween, but it'll have to do. I feel like my local Cinemark had a lot more horror selection last year. I remember going to see A Clockwork Orange, Halloween, and Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein it what seemed to be the span of a month. Kind of disappointed.
