Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I saw this morning that "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was the number 1 topic trending on Yahoo. I had a panic attack that I was going to click on the link and find out they were doing a re-make. Thankfully, its just the 30 year anniversary of the movie.

You said last year that you thought The Town might have been your favorite movie of 2010, where did that fit in with what you have here?  Cuz they did kinda cop out with the whole unneeded romance angle with the victim of their first robbery in the movie.

Have you ever put anything down on paper yet?  We could probably get a script down with the people in this thread, just have people start pouring ideas and someone cleaning it all up neat and tidy.

I'm not much of a writer, but I mentioned at the very beginning of this thread, I simply want one more elite level, well acted, crime movie.  Saturday night I was flippin channels and yet again, landed on Casino, for the 479th time.

I know the @#$%^& film word for word and still sit there and am just mesmorized by DeNiro and Pesci and Stone and the bosses, all of it, the music (and I rarely ever notice music in movies) the scenes/settings, clothes, all of it.  Perfection.
The Departed showed me it's possible, The Town further made me believe in it, and even to a lesser extent, Takers did too.  (though they were corny and flashy, but at least tried)

I wanna see the story from 17-18-19 year old kids, growin up in high school want not, 6-7 of them go off into crime (mobish type crime) and 2-3 of them go off into police work.  Fast forward 10 years, they are at their best now, mob guys run things, cops are good cops, do their jobs well and all that, now it's time for their paths to cross somehow.  And I want the best of the best of hollywood.

Damon, Affleck, DiCaprio, Bale, Pitt, Crowe, Walker (Running Scared shows me he can do this, Takers wasn't fair.

) the new flavor would be Fassbender, throw him in too, Gylenhal, all of em.  I'm forgetting 10 others probably, but I would want them all to be in.  The movie has to be 3 hours, and like you said, I don't need good guys to win, hell in a perfect world, some of these guys switch sides.  Imagine a mob guy savin a cop from another mob guy, or the cop savin a mob guy from another cop, stuff like that.  Respect from when they were kids, etc etc.

Johnny said he wanted to write something similar to all this.  Kev, if you see an angle too, then damn it, get to work.  Just please put NT in the credits somewhere.

One of Scorsese's next projects is called "The Irishman" and it already has DeNiro, Pesci, Pacino on board. It's based on the book "I heard you Pain Houses" and it seems like it could be amazing

Back to the Future was thought of to be a hell of a steal at 25 dollars, 15 bucks, it will probably never get any lower, unless you buy it used.

Scoop up now from BB if you can afford to, it'll never be this cheap again.

Sounds like Mystic River with like 3 more people involved and their high school years included in the story.

Mystic River was just a couple hoodlums wasn't it?  And that revolved around the mystery around his daughter's death, it shouldn't be simliar to that.

I'm talkin mob mob.  Drug runnin, money launderin, holes and shovels, trenchcoats, etc etc.  Imagine 6-7 tough little dudes in school that were bright kids, but under the surface had bigger plans on how to run things in their little small town, then they grow a little and move on to the bigger city and try to organize and run that spot.  Then the city grows around them, by the time they hit 35 they got 20 people under them, money piled up, respect, fear, cops look the other way, now boom, their friends move into the city as cops/agents, what have you, to try and clean up the streets, only to find it's their buddies they lost touch with.  Other idea I can think of, maybe they didn't lose touch, they know the mob guys are their friends, but they were I dunno, uhhh, vice cops, and they never had to cross paths with mob type friends, so they could still remain "friendly" but not too friendly.  Vice may not work, I may need another department to put them in.  Missing persons or some @#$%.  Naw, that won't work either.  This is why I'm not a writer.

Nah. Sean Penn was a gangster, Kevin Bacon was a cop and Tim Robbins was just the average friend that got caught up. Loyalties and friendships were tested, etc. That's what I meant when I related your story to Mystic River.

Your idea doesnt sound bad though. I'd watch it if the story got fleshed into a 3 hour epic of crime and loyalties along the lines of Casino or The Departed/Infernal Affairs. As long as it was from a strong writer(s) and director.

I mean, of course there are exceptions.

Those are things I want, but not the only kinds of movies I would watch/enjoy. Otherwise, I wouldn't be watching much.

Plus, Jeremy Renner, anything Boston crime-related, and seemingly anything directed by Ben Affleck (so far)... can't misses for me.

But no, I haven't sat down with the intention of starting a screenplay yet. I just have... "outlines," I guess you would say.

Your premise sounds like part Mystic River, part Kill the Irishman.

Well, it's almost impossible with coming up with something unseen anymore.  I don't want to copy any of those films, and any time you have sort of a crime "team" so to speak, and the cops that chase after them, no matter how I slice it, it will relate to something.  Such as Heat when Pacino just suddenly starts chasing DeNiro's team, yet none of them have seen DeNiro before.

They knew the other players in the movie, but not the biggest and baddest one?

So if I go with the whole related in some way part, this case, growing up together, I guess you could even make the comparison it's like Austin Powers.

I just want the crime "team" to be efficient, and not be the stupid greedy ones that always get them caught, or shot, or whatever.  Don't have enough time to grab that extra bag of cash, then leave the @#$%^& extra bag of cash stupid, get the hell out of there, those are gonna be real bullets flyin your way.

And I don't want doorknobs for cops chasin after them, I want them to have skill too, and want to catch their man, but with still a moral dilemma of respecting the dudes.

And not getting it to sound like anything else.........Have to figure out that part of the equation.  I dunno, have to work on ideas and give them to someone to write it out smartly.
frown.gif

What about, an older cop 50ish, chasin bad guys, they don't have a jacket on the main guy, not sure who he is, he's well isolated, no face to put out there, just know he exsists, and after a while, the cop finds him, only to realize it's some big reveal, his son, or younger brother he hasn't seen in 20 years, something like that.  Does that reference any type of movie ya'll have ever seen?  Is there an angle there that could work?

Edit:
My basic premise and the part I want focused on most is simple.  We all grew up, went to Jr High, High School and all that, you grow up with 5-6 buddies, hang out, girl stuff, play football, pick on kids you don't like, get in fights, dream big etc etc, most kids go to college, some go get jobs, some get married, blah blah blah.  So, what happens when these 5-6 kids all decide to simply run a "business" together?  Someone is the brains, someone is the muscle, one of them has a connection to someone that can help them get into one avenue they're trying to get into, the other 2-3 just follow along, do what their friends do.  We all know and can relate to that group of kids, can we not?  I don't want them to be the Sopranos, no their dads weren't mob guys, no they didn't get raised by mob guys like Goodfellas, they just simply were a pack of kids, stuck together, and as they grew up, they got into something, got deeper and deeper, made money, got power, girls, what have you, next thing ya know, they're "bad" guys.  Even if they just tryin to make money the only way they knew how.  The (sort of) easy way.  Then grow the story from there.

I figure, 20-25 minutes on the kids, 45-55 minutes on setting up how good they are as 35ish year olds, another hour of them setting up the big event (mixed with backstory from the law side of things) 35-45 minute resolution. Be it action scene, chase, death, incarcerations, however the story ends.  Guys have to make choices, switch sides back and forth even, etc etc.  See what happens.  Female leads can be the same, girls they knew growing up, hell one of the main characters could even be a girl/woman if you want.  The demise of the bad guys won't be a woman, none of that, but as Johnny has said a few times in here, need strong woman roles, so we'll try to accomodate that, without just making them the Scarface chick, passed from one boss to the next.
