Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Watching Basketball DIaries the other night got me thinking that Ernie Hudson was really good in supporting roles back in the day. Most of the time played a likeable character.

Eyes Wide Shut was dope. I’ve seen about 5 Kubrick films so far and it’s probably my 2nd favorite after 2001. I thought the Hungarian dude was way more sleazy than charming but I appreciated how in the first bit of the movie they showed that Bill was a legitimately good dude. Then once Alice had that bug in her ear and got high then it was downhill from there. Almost Adam and Eve esque tbh. It hurt seeing Bill spiral and start to make more and more questionable decisions because he seemed like a legitimately good dude.

I was locked in once he got the password though and the opening ceremony was so entrancing. The chanting, body movements and thunking of the staff and it’s just repeating over and over again was very trancelike. You really feel like Bill, you’re trying to take it all in but you have no idea what is going on.

The ending felt a little clumsy to me. The Ziegler scene felt like he revealed too much and felt a little handholdy. Almost like when the Mystery Machine gang gets a confession and they go over the whole scheme. And I didn’t care for the toy store scene either. I would have loved it if the movie ended with Bill seeing the mask on his side of the bed and not having the breakdown or toy store conversation with Alice at all.

Overall 6.5/8

I did a bit of reading afterwards and the way Kubrick depict the layers of the class is amazing. I’m the beginning you see the Harfords and everything seems idyllic. They have money, a fancy house, and look to be an ideal family. Then they introduce the Zieglers and they’re on an entire different level wealth wise. And you see Bill interact with his secretary, the costume owner, and the prostitute and it’s very transactional. You’re supposed to think he doesn’t regularly interact with people of that class. It’s not that he’s better than them but they’re doing a job for him and that’s it. And then you realize Ziegler is doing the same exact thing to Bill and you realize there are levels. Which also makes me not like the ending as much cause he gotta be the red cloak guy or super close to the top. Anyway, tons to read into the movie, and I definitely will be rewatching this
I still haven’t seen Kubricks 2001 or The Shining. The shining was popular when I was a kid so I watched it then no less than 10times, but a proper watch is needed, on both.
I planned on watching some reels today and doing nothing productive but so far I have watched Begin Again(Ruffalo/Knightly- superb by the way) and now I’m on TWILIGHT. What can I say.

I would add Halloween (1979) as another example
(A great idea, story, pacing told cohesively)
I personally enjoy John Carpenter’s approach to storytelling.

Perhaps a better example than Halloween would be this one: Shot in one room, but so good!

It’s called A Chamber film.

One setting throughout.

Most of them are usually all dope

More of a psychological thriller
