Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Yes. I liked her in The White Lotus. Brittany O’Grady too.

Careful, public perception is swingin into "nostalgia" territory so people are pretending it was a good movie now, instead of just being a lazy vehicle to push 3D into the mainstream.

Yeah it ****ing sucks tbh.
Watch this, though:

I mean can you say its anything but a White savior story rehash that was made to amplify 3D as a theater pull? I will say the 3D looked great for the time and was used well. But the story was garbage and the movie as a whole was less than interesting.

Not gonna be excited for Dances With Wolves 2022.

“We used to come here for school retreat. We would swim to that island every day. I love the water. We used to lie out on the sand and let the sun dry us. And try to guess the names of the birds singing.”

I watched it twice in theaters because the first time I was underwhelmed as was like “did I miss something?” Second viewing I was just like “no this just wasn’t good”

The Avatar hype was very really in 2009 though. Remember having multiple people breathlessly tell me how amazing it was.

I've heard Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas, and I don't argue the stark similarities. The thing is, those are perceptions. And my point earlier with switching around the 2 descriptors in your previous response, my point wasn't to argue what you were saying. My point was simply to switch 2 descriptive perceptions to show that neither is right or wrong, that's all.

I don't deny it's a story that's already been told. My rebuttal to that would simply be that so little in Hollywood is an original story.

Because of the fact that they were both historical blockbusters, Avatar is often mentioned with Titanic. Oh, a story of a pauper courting a rich woman who's way out of his league? And ultimately he dies in some form of sacrifice? Yeah, never heard that story before.

Almost every single movie to ever come out of Hollywood can be described with sort of tired summary. In fact if I were to think of original concepts that I personally enjoyed thoroughly, there really aren't many. Flight, Soul, Jake Gyllenhaal's Life, Law Abiding Citizen... uuummm... Peppermint? Devil Wears Prada? I'm running out. Get Out. Jumanji. There's just not a lot.

Random, but has anyone seen this (Lion's Den) or know where I can watch? Early Ethan Hawke, it was mentioned in a book I read.

Oh, when I think of Lion's Den, I am definitely not thinking of a movie. I mean yes I am, buuuuuut... 👀

Don't get me wrong. I was aware of the hype and how extreme it got. The story was not unique and even the actual writing and plot was uninspired and at times not good. But it did not matter to me. The enjoyment of the movie was the visual spectacle. Something that I hadn't really seen before. If this one can deliver on the same then I'll be happy. A lot of people were also complaining because became the highest grossing movie of all time. Thought it wasn't "worthy" of such a distinction.

I’d never heard the AVATAR is Dances with Wolves until recently. Now anytime the subject comes up on here, at home or at work I hear the A AVATAR is Dances With Wolves thing. Was this a REDDIT or FB discussion that I missed?

That and Pocahontas were the two biggest comparisons. Along with white savior complaints.

And then people who hate 3D piled on too

Agreed on all points. I dont dislike the fact that Avatar exists. People enjoy it, and that's good. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean it doesn't have its audience or purpose. Art is subjective, movies probably the most contentious form of art. My fiance sure doesn't enjoy the more extreme films in my library :lol

Speaking of original storytelling y’all should check out Smile when it comes to streaming.

Similar feeling.

I get Ska and others enjoying it. I saw it in theaters and it was meh....never watched it again. It's ok, lotta films meh. But the hype was Tebow level nonsense. No substance.

But I'll see the sequel in the theater too cuz I'm a degenerate theater goer. *Shrugs* :lol And the visuals will make it worth the $5 Tuesday price tag I'm willing to pay. I know they'll be on point and I'll likely by the Blu ray for said visuals and never open the damn thing like I've done with dozens of other films. :lol
