Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but now seems as good a time as any to mention that the greatest sports/high school/stoner/nostalgic movie of all time is Dazed and Confused.

It's also one of Tarantino's favorite films of all time. So there you go.

Oh, I forgot to mention Anthony Mackie in The Adjustment Bureau. I think he's super underrated (which is understandable, considering he's rarely played a lead role).

Two of my other favorite, kind of low-key actors: Peter Sarsgaard and Paul Dano.
I saw him on Conan the other night and he was pretty awesome. Gonna have to check out The Hurt Locker to see how his acting is.

I really need to see Dazed and Confused, too. It's on TV every other month or so, but every time it's on some basic cable channel. Is it the kind of film that you could watch there and still appreciate (not a lot of stuff that gets edited)?

First time I noticed Sarsgaard was Shattered Glass which was excellent and gives me hope that Hayden Christensen can actually do something other then suck as Anakin. But Sars stole that movie..........The Happening, Jesus Christ what a damn letdown. I was so angry watching that film, I kept thinking the closing credits were going to read April Fools Day!!!! But no such luck........Dazed is better unedited, terrific young cast as well, another solid Ben Affleck role as well.

^ That's another one I want S&T's opinions on: The Hurt Locker.

I've never seen Dazed and Confused in one setting, but I've seen like 90% of the whole thing. Complete waste. Do not want.

I just, I really like my movies to have meaning, substance, to move me or challenge me somehow. Just watching a buncha dudes fight it out (300) or tear the streets up (Gone in a Furious Drift) or do all the coke they possibly can (Scarface)... or do dumb, immature crap... I just... I don't get it, I guess. Waste of my damn time.

Yeah, Fight Club is a fighting movie, but if you don't see that as a movie about a guy's struggle, you were distracted whenever you were watching.

Sure, Blow might seem to be about... blow... but nah, man. No way. Love that movie.

I love Gladiator, even though people categorize it as a 300 type movie. To me, it's not even close. Gladiator is like the fighting version of What Dreams May Come, for those who have seen that. That movie, to me, is more about a guy's passion for his wife taking him through unimaginable battles in her name, even after her death.

I'm not too big on war movies, but Glory is an all time favorite. Saying that movie is just a Civil War movie is like saying Star Wars is just about spaceships; there's so much more to it than that!

Anyone else like this when it comes to movies? Like, I don't watch just to veg out, kill a couple hours, and I'm really let down by movies that really don't serve a purpose beyond just vegging out, chilling with friends for a couple hours.

So yeah, The Hurt Locker?

Another one I'll throw out there see if any of you have seen it and have something to offer: Life is Beautiful.

Just finished watching Winter's Bone....it was like the Andre Miller of movies. %@+@ was SLOOOOOOOOOOOW. Great acting, but I almost dozed off about 3 times.

*I loved the Hurt Locker....it's intense.  Jeremy Renner is an amazing actor...IMO, he was the best in The Town.

*BTW, $$###!% 3 was HILARIOUS.....

Jeremy Renner and Mackie were incredible in The Hurt Locker, but I think the movie itself is... maybe average. It's like a 5.5-6.0, in my mind (and would be worse if not for Renner and Mackie). There really was no plot, the characters were predictable and it had a number of inaccuracies (I am not a soldier, but there were aspects of it that just seemed absurd, and were confirmed by those that are).

Needless to say, it is nowhere near an award-winning film to me. A wartime movie in this era, and with a female director... that just screams political vote.

Do yourself a favor and watch it on DVD, or better yet, get the Criterion Collection (you know there's greatness involved when a stoner/high school flick is put out by the same company that released Seven Samurai and The 400 Blows on DVD). Chuck Klosterman's essay alone makes it worth it.

I won't hype it up anymore since its simplicity makes it great but DVD is necessary the first time around.

the hurt locker was cool but very over hyped. Not cracking my top 10 of war movies. I really liked the ending though

Did anyone ever see moon, staring Sam Rockwell? I think that's a really good sci fi flick that flew under the radar. Came out in 2009

Kev nailed Hurt Locker, solid but not elite, great performances though.........but for tastes, I'm all about vegging out. Love to watch a movie that is challenging or stressful or emotional, but two hours of workable plot/dialogue/scenery, yeah I'm content as hell with that........Hero with Jet Li. Anyone? THEE best martial art movie imo. Chocolate right behind that...........Ska, Casino? Goodfellas, Heat? You good with those?

I love a good stoner flick and Criterion is pretty awesome so I'll have to add it to my wish list.

I don't need to be moved, but I need to be damn impressed by something or someone to enjoy the film (comedies aside). I'm with you on that last part, too, the days of going to the movies to see some random flick to kill some time are gone for me (doesn't help tickets are 13-16 dollars in NY). I much rather just have a conversation or listen to music if we're gonna be sitting around for a couple of hours.

And speaking of stoner flicks, I saw the preview to James Franco, Danny McBride and Natalie Portman's new stoner flick Your Highness (directed by the same dude that did Pineapple Express) and it looked decent. I love Franco and McBride so I'll probably get my
smokin.gif
on and check it out.

There Will Be Blood was like that. Movie sucked balls, but Lewis was INCREDIBLE and made it worth a viewing just to see it. No Country was so much better a total movie.

Uuuugh. Pineapple Express.

btw, if any of you are fans of Napolean Dynamite, Juno, or Little Miss Sunshine, you will be banned.

I'm not even kidding.

Never seen the first 2 (always wanted to, just haven't gotten around to it; I really want to see Goodfellas, actually), never heard of the 3rd.
