Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Since 28 Days Later, the only Danny Boyle movie I missed in theaters was Millions.

This ain't changing that:

Next week

That sketch is terrible
lol I love the Californians...  "Devin, what err yew dooing here"

You'd be surprised the movies all time great directors like. One of the things I love about Scorcese is that he's such a film historian that he makes it a point to see every movie that comes out & finds something about it that he appreciates...

O, if you see this, you need to stay out of the Fast/Furious thread altogether, or ignore the internet for the next 3 months entirely. 8o

This weekend will suck without basketball, so a good time to catch up on a bunch of movies if I can.

Last night came home and wife was watchin the first Twilight.........I either forgot, didn't know, didn't pay attention, or MIB'd my brain, um, Anna Kendrick is in that movie, and um, she looks like the tastiest morsel on the platter. :eek Maybe I should get into that franchise a lil bit. I might have been too hard on that stupid ****.

^^^ No, you weren't too hard on it. Its way dumb. Not even Anna can save it.

After seeing that trailer for Dead Man Down with Breathe-Fabolous.... I have to see this movie now

I think I'm over The Following....... I had such high hopes for this show, but just can't get into it whatsoever.

Too early to bail out now man. It's still been really solid early, they merely had one episode that didn't take our breath away. The preview for next week looked solid, I bet they get back on track just fine.

Every episode isnt going to be jaw-dropping. I really like this show and I think that it will only get better. But to say that it hasnt been good so far, is something I cant even come close to agreeing with.

Naw man, I'm not saying it is or isn't good. Just hasn't sucked me in like I initially thought it would

Anybody caught Zero Hour? Appeared to be another sci fi mystery show fro the commercials but I missed it. Was it any good?

:lol No problem.

So I checked out Gangster Squad, after you guys said it wasn't so bad.

It wasn't so bad. It's like a mashup of LA Confidential, The Untouchables, and Goodfellas, only directed by Zack Snyder. The dialogue's goofy, everything is super stylized just for the hell of it, and it does feel choppy and undercooked. But it's savage. Everyone gets slaughtered. It's like a violent cartoon. I mean, this is LA Noire. It just needed to tighten up.

The movie will have a good scene then just die. Have a nice a nice piece of dialogue, then lose all momentum. Like it'll look so smooth and painted, but then in the same breath it'll be technically sloppy, or they try to hit a line it thinks is hot, but just falls flat. But there are times when they hit. Sean Penn'll a moment in his wacky, but serious way. Something funny or just bloody awesome will happen...It's just that the film can't maintain a flow of those scenes for it's life.

I'll give Zack Snyder this much credit. He is a much better filmmaker than this guy. Say what you want about his story or ideas, but technically you can't really touch Snyder. His films are always smooth and clear and ambitious and well-realized. This....is kinda so bad it's good? They just needed to cut down the time and push it. This needed to be more Sin City than Hollywoodland.

Somehow, this movie takes itself too seriously, and those plain, functional, serious moments kill the flow, and make you check the clock every 5 minutes.

But it was fine for what it was, maybe dragging on too long. And I really liked the cast and hope there's a director's cut where they smooth things over.

Seriously though...how are you gonna cast Emma Stone and do absolutely nothing with her?
She made Megan Fox in Transformers 2 look like a deep character. :{

hungover and don't feel like getting up and turning it off/10

What did you think of Penn's handling of the role itself? I thought he tried too hard and should have just played himself.

I think he definitely thought he was in another movie. Kinda like the beginning of Fast Five where The Rock didn't get it that no one else was taking the movie seriously. (even though it kinda seems Vin Diesel takes it all seriously, and he's just that bad of an actor :lol). The movie didn't know what to do with him. He went full Sin City, but they were either playing it **** Tracy or Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.

I liked it though. He was a part of that, it's so bad, it's good. :lol

I watched The Impossible a few days ago and just been...kinda digesting it.

This and The Intouchables would make some type of racially off-base double feature. I get it that this is the story they're trying to tell...it's just I can't help but feel like this movie is racially insensitive. I heard about the tsunamis as well as everyone, and all I heard about was Pacific islanders and coast-landers dying by the hundred thousands. How is it possible that not a one of them meant a damn thing to this movie? They're background set dressing like the palm trees. You could barely remember what any one of them even looked like, besides robot nurse who's more or less just a video game save screen character.

I feel like have been transferring their racial uncomfortable-ness with this movie to the fact that a Spanish family got whitewashed. I mean it stands out, for sure. Seriously, this is the whitest family on the planet. They're translucent. It's like they went out of their way to ask Naomi and Ewan to push that whiteness to the cheese-tasting, horse-riding limit. You know it's bad when someone says her name, Maria, and you pause and think...there's no ******g way. There is not a drop of ethnic in you. :lol But either way, it's still European tourists in a Pacific resort. It's just that that works to highlight how whitewashed this 3rd world story has become.

It's not about our main characters, it's about the elephant in the room. It's the fact that this film sublimely minimizes and ignores every person of color. All you see are these mystical tree people who sprout out to take care of the poor rich whites. There's not a lick of attention paid to the dead natives. They barely even put them in the center of the frame. I mean, at one point the sound of a screaming kid gets our characters' attention, they go to him and of course he's a blonde haired blue eyed little boy. They get some help and all you see on the street side are white people being tended by the mystical tree people.

This film is naively racist. And the only people that matter to it are the ones who went on vacation.

Alright, now I got that out of the way... :lol The tidal had my hands shaking. Jesus. It hits you right in the gut.
And Naomi...she earned that damn Oscar nom. :{ Her..."injuries"...hurt me deeply. You feel every bit of it through her.
And Ewan...man...Ewan'll break your heart. He's a heartbreaker. Been at it since Trainspotting, what can I say?

But without context...without social significance...without a respect for their surroundings and the bigger reality of what happened to so many of these people...

...This is glorified torture porn.

Imagine someone made a film about somebody getting mugged and beaten one morning in Manhattan. And they're rich and go to the best doctors. And it terribly inconveniences and scares them. But they end up catching the mugger and find her stolen things, and her family loves her even more once it's over, The End.

....Oh and that morning was September 11, 2001.

I mean...there are no subtitles in this movie. Think about that.

All that seems to matter to this movie is that white people came here, they're in pain, **** everyone else, someone help them. You could've told me this took place anywhere. Hawaii, China, Brazil, whatever. It doesn't matter, because all this movie cares about is white European tourists. There's no token ethnic role(s).

Some of this would be fine, if this wasn't something real that happened.

*spoiler* And as if they didn't have a hard enough time getting you to feel for these people and this story...this family gets waved through past all the regular white people onto a private plane home. That's just...a lot of things all at once. The moral of the story isn't that God works in mysterious ways, or that the power of love and family can get you through the hardest of times. It's that omg...isn't that crazy?! And we ALL lived! We're never vacationing in Thailand again!

Argo had more respect for Arabs than this did for Thai people.

This isn't so much a movie, as it's a great story for a dinner party. I loved that backdrop, and they created a really amazing, lived-in world and disaster epic around this...they just didn't seem to care too much about it, because it was interrupting their feel-good Euro-centric story.

There is so much to like about this film, and so much of what I don't like feels like baggage I'm bringing in, but I can't help it.

**** this ******g movie / 10

A show I think yall should appreciate more is Southland. I've barely kept up with it during new seasons but when I catch up it's just consistently solid with the surprise handful of great stories each season. Really good cast as well. Lucy Liu, voice of Huey Freeman, and dude from the O.C.

Yea man its a very good show. Very underated show. Lucy Liu was great last season.

This poster looks "Steve McQueen" old school. Speaking of Lucy Liu, does anyone watch CBS' Elementary? I like the show & the spin on Sherlock Holmes & Watson...
