Post Your New Eras*59-Fiftys*etc... VOL. INFINITY NOW W/ Henz0/Thunderchunk/Icy's FAQ ON PG.1

Looking at MLB collectors.com, the Angels got a fatter A in 1989-1992. So it's definitely a 1989 or 1990 poster. 89 was first year for the 'non cartoon' Oriole too.

Home, away, and a Sunday type alternate (rarely worn) is where I'd draw the line. That's how early 2000s were for the NBA too. Now we may have a home, away, and 10 rarely worn special releases. Not a fan.

Some new era snapbacks I've picked up past couple weeks...

Damn, I had no idea the Orioles grey was an alternate hat. I remember one kid had it back in hs, but I thought it was just one of those fashion hats like the red yanks hats that Fred durst wore. Speaking of which, I remember a lot of people here in Toronto used to wear a red Yankees hat backwards, like durst, after limp bizkits nookie vid came out.

You win. You lose some. I think I'm done with bulk buys for awhile. Almost not worth the hassle. From missing hats to photos being grey unders and receiving something different.

Wrigleyville coming through along with some other places.

Cheapo 2013 de BP on fields. Made in China bunch. Definitely don't feel worth $35 retail. Do feel they are worth the $9 I paid

2012-2015 Kansas City royals Musa poly
2012-2015 Atlanta braves made in China. Feels looks and acts like made in China wool. No fuzz or nap on it. Quite shiny. Pretty bad example. I'll have to post a made in China vs made in USA braves soon.

With the current era of crap quality at inflated prices, I have no regrets with these types of purchases. Pretty much set for next 10 yrs

Awesome additions green rhino123 green rhino123 . I keep coming back to your post for more photos. Great reference for collectors.

A couple new comparison shots.

Dare I say, the earlier poly caps had some really soft fuzzy crowns. The 2003-2006 wool is lacking a bit of substance. They almost feel like china era no fuzz wool, if that makes sense

Royals, like the Cubs, changed their blue at some point in time. No one's really going dark royal anymore.

FYI. Craniumfiiteds is having a 65-70% off sale. Get your pre applied total to $100, and you get free shipping. Sitting at 5 caps for $46 shipped. Contemplating a purchase.

And today only. Hatclub has 25% off and lids has 30% off

Latest find. 1993 Milwaukee Brewers on field MUSA 100% wool. Green under. Batterman on back.

Priced way too cheap. Let alone my size. Easy decision. Frickin pristine condition given its 25 year age.

Comparison shot with a 2009 era Musa poly alternate
101FB810-4DC1-43F0-BA35-FCB836567715.jpeg

Much richer and deeper blue on the OG. Logo size and specifics have stayed pretty much the same. Flat logo on the OG. Ever so slightly raised on the 2009 cool base alternate.

A new de-flagging. Made in China wool Albuquerque dukes MiLB custom retro (former AAA team of the dodgers for 20plus years).

Hey green rhino123 green rhino123 do you know off hand how many teams had nylon front panel caps in the 70s-90s?
I'm talking like the white Sox white front panel SOX cap, Atlanta braves white front panel red A cap, and the Toronto blue Jays white front panel bird cap. I have one coming in next week. Just wondering how many more I'm missing

not off the top of my head

what about the expos tho? :nerd: they went all-nylon then to nylon front panels only
both variations technically have nylon front panels

the pirates had those nylon pillbox caps

the history of the padres hat is a horror show...but apparently they used nylon front panels in the early 70s
according to that mlbcoll site

brewers - front nylon panels - early 80s as well - with the new era caps
but they primary used roman pro at that time and those stayed wool

80s all nylon orioles' caps as well

Two latest finds in my size.

First a late 1992 Toronto blue Jays white nylon on field. '100% wool'. Musa. Green under. Sewn batterman. Last year of the more baby blue top feather of the Jay's head. It changes to more turquoise after that.

Just all around pretty amazing. Ever so slightly used. Shape still intact after all these years

Bonus shot vs a 2007ish era alternate poly.

The Og features a darker blue all around with a flat logo. The recent alternate tends to feature a white border around every element. Not a total fan of raised logos. It kind of takes away from the design. Og wins hands down.

Next up was something I hadn't seen before
1994-1996 era Cleveland Indians Cooperstown collection 1951-1957 design. Musa. 100% wool. Grey under.

Slightly more used but still maintained it's shape without the visor even having an once of sweat stains so I'll attribute the yellowing to something else other than massive use.

Anyways. Tags seem to indicate 1993-1996. I didn't realize the Cooperstown collection went that far back.

Bonus shot.

What we tend to see from new era now on the left. This is a regular current wahoo shrunk down with a raised wishbone C logo. On the right is what we tend to see from places like Mickey's place. Flat logo all around. Wahoo is uniquely shaped for this logo.

The '93-96 retro doesn't quite compare to even American needle retros or Roman pro's you see on eBay. But I still consider it a step up. For some context, the Roman pro looks like this
https://m.ebay.com/itm/RARE-VINTAGE...279717?hash=item4b44690225:g:FAgAAOSwJslbBf1F
Date I say it's an uglier wahoo but more in line with the original.

^have you totally trashed a 5950 through sheer and utter wear and sweat? I've been through maybe 12 over the years where the bill is either cracked or completely limp. Where the crown is mashed and the whole thing smells. Where brown sweat stains totally take over the grey underbrim. Where the underside plastic sweatband element is totally cracked.

The cap above is none of that IMHO.

I've also had some wool on fields that I may have worn just 6 times have their white sweatband turn yellow after all these years. This is what I sensed with the Indians coop. I saw it more as a age thing than a disgusting yellowing through usage. I guess I'm a chance taker on used caps. I'm sure I'll find a dud eventually that turns me off.

Crazy how these things come in waves. Spotted this with a $9 bin free ship. Easy decision.

Looking like another last year 1993 Milwaukee Brewers made in USA 100% wool green under on field. This ones brand new with tags still. I guess one to rock. One to stock.

What happened to the photos that green rhino posted up. I need those for reference. Anyone save them?

Some new pickups. Sometimes you're looking for one cap and stumble upon a treasure trove.

last photo is a made in china "retro" custom vs. the real deal. Custom comes really close in matching the original.

I think all but one is brand new. Slightly overpaid on three/ Underpaid on the rest/ Averages out nicely considering a lot of these caps I have never seen in my size for below $36.

From what I've seen, for me personally, 2000-2003 is the golden era of the wool on field. Right before the poly switch, those blue tagged caps just aren't the same as these earlier wools. And if you go back too far, to say 1995-1996, you get trucker crowns (although the wool is super soft, the entire cap can feel a bit flimsy).

Latest acquisitions @ $15 (Canadian) each so ~$11 USD

Wife even picked up the tab as part of my Father's Day gift

Local outlet-type spot got a boatload of pre-NE flag on fields, which is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. They have pretty much every team in stock (for now) so I'm thinking of going back for more. Just need to narrow things down because while most teams I have zero desire to own (ie. TB, Bal, KC, CR, Mets, Marlins, Ari) the Jays fan in me has me conflicted on anything AL. Debating getting Det, Cle, Oak, StL atm

green rhino123 green rhino123 appreciate it.

Quick analysis of the rise of the official away/alternate sets from those photos...

1989- 26 teams. 2 had two caps. 8% of the league had two caps, or 92% had one.
1993- 28 teams. 7 had two caps. 1 had three caps. 29% of the league had two *or more caps, or 71% had one.
1994- 28 teams. 8 had two caps. 3 had three caps. 39% of the league had two *or more caps, or 61% had one.
1995- 28 teams. 10 had two caps. 3 had three caps. 46% of the league had two *or more caps, or 54% had one.
1999- 30 teams. 15 had two caps. 7 had three caps. 73% of the league had two *or more caps, or 27% had one.

It's hard to look at the current era. I think every single team has an official "alternate", much like what was posted in those flyers. Many of those '94-'99 sunday caps or alternates were barely worn. I do know that currently we have about 9 teams with one prominent cap, 7 with three, and 3 teams with 4, so it appears to not have gotten too much worse than 1999.

Crazy to see the uptick in that ten year span vs. where we are at now. The league does have 8-12 one offs that diminishes the MLB brand, but overall, it's not as bad as I thought it would be

they only needed 1 or 2 different colored caps per team (back before they started to really market them/use them to make money)...

...then, they realized the opportunity and fairly rapidly, you have all these different caps...

its that simple
a devoted fan may prefer a strong simple identity but they've crunched the numbers and weighed the opportunity cost
and they know what they are doing...so good for them i guess...i prefer it to be less complicated tho

but keep in mind i prefer caps without the batterman even

wallyhopp wallyhopp

What are those 9 current teams you referenced? I can probably guess most of them.
