Run this ball up their you know what. MJD and DMC get that front seven gassed and bruised up. Open up the flood gates to more D-Mo back shoulders and Rod Streater Slants.

Raiders guard Austin Howard says Jets can be pushed around

By. Jerry McDonald
09/05/2014

Austin Howard has a good idea of what the Raiders are up against.

As the right tackle for the New York Jets, Howard worked against the same defense in practice that he will face Sunday at MetLife Stadium -- this time as the right guard for the Raiders.

``This will be a good evaluator for where we are as a team,'' Howard said. ``But I believe we can go up there and push them around a little bit.''

Pushing people around is exactly what general manager Reggie McKenzie had in mind when he brought in Howard (6-foot-7, 330 pounds), as well as rookie left guard Gabe Jackson (6-3, 336) and signing left tackle Donald Penn as a free agent (6-4, 330).

That's nearly 1,000 pounds of push to go along with center Stefen Wisniewski (6-3, 315) and right tackle Khalif Barnes (6-6, 320).

``They're a way bigger offensive line with a lot more vertical receivers,'' Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson said by conference call. ``They are actually catching the ball vertically now, making plays for the quarterback. They've got the quarterback situation under control over there, so they're a pretty good team right now from what I've seen in the preseason.''

Richardson, the NFL defensive rookie of the year in 2013, is 6-foot-3, 294 pounds, is a stout run defender in the Jets' 3-4 defense. The other end, Muhammad Wilkerson, was a first-round draft pick in 2011, as was outside linebacker Quintin Coples in 2011 and cornerback Dee Milliner (out with an injury) last season along with Richardson.

Outisde linebacker Calvin Pryor, signed as a free agent, was a first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals.

New York gave up an NFL low 3.4 yards per carry in 2013, which provides a good first test for the running back featuring Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden.

The only running back to gain 100 yards on the Jets all last season was the Raiders' Marcel Reece, whose 123 yards included a 63-yard touchdown bolt through the middle of the New York defense last Dec. 8 in a 37-27 win by New York.

Richardson conceded surrendering 100-plus yards stung a little, although ``not too much because we came out with the victory, which is all that matters in the end.''

Although Richardson lines up at right end and Howard is a right guard, they'll be close enough to the middle of the action that their paths will cross as they did in practice with the Jets.

``I've been waiting on this one,'' Richardson said. ``I circled it on the calendar. We were cool when he was here. We went against each other in practice and stuff, but now it's for a whole game so I can't wait to see how it turns out.''

Howard laughed at the idea of being singled out in Richardson's calendar.

``I'll be looking forward to it, we'll see,'' Howard said. ``They're a good group of guys. Relationships aside, I know they're going to come out to play and that's going to be likewise on our side as well.''

During training camp, Howard declined to address the opener against his former team and even now he is going out of his way to not make it bigger than it has to be.

``Obviously this game is going to mean a little bit more to me with the history I have with the team,'' Howard said. ``With that being said, one thing I have noticed and have come to realize is you have to show up to play every game. You can't go out more amped up for one game than you are another.''

It will be Howard's first start as a guard after 33 previous starts at tackle _ 32 of them in the past two seasons for the Jets. Raiders line coach Tony Sparano was with the Jets in 2012 when Howard first became a full-time starter and likened him to Leonard Davis, a former Pro Bowl tackle who he moved to guard in Dallas with good success.

``He's a big, powerful presence inside,'' Raiders coach Dennis Allen said. ``Tony had an opportunity to be there when he was with the Jets, and we had a little insider information to know that he certainly had that potential.''

Cornerback Chimdi Chekwa was ruled out of the Jets game with a knee injury, meaning rookie seventh-round pick TJ Carrie will be the third cornerback as well as punt return specialist.

Middle linebacker Nick Roach was limited with a concussion and listed as questionable, with Kaluka Maiava on stand-by to start if he can't play.

Defensive end LaMarr Woodley did not practice, but Allen said it was not injury related and he is listed as probable.

The most significant injury for the Jets is to cornerback Dee Milliner, who won't play because of a

The Raiders held practice Friday in New Jersey, with temperatures in the 80 degree range and high humidity.
``It's a little warm today, a little humid,'' Allen told reporters. ``We have to make sure we do a good job of staying hydrated, but we're not going to let any external factors affect how we go out and play the game.''

Carr and Olsen need to start with long balls to stretch the field and screens to keep them from blitzing. Even if the balls are overthrown we need to let them know Carr isnt afraid to go deep. We need to keep them from loading the box...then after that we can start running the ball with DMc and MJD

I think your game plan is spot on. They will load the box and bring front pressure until they are forced to respect Carr's passing. I think giving Carr some opportunities for intermediate throws followed by a couple runs and slants should back up the Jet's linebackers.
