Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

thats pretty much his point tho, to a older hip-hop listener things like that may not be revolutionary. to this newer generation it is, & if the same song comes from any of the more liked rappers it probably gains a lot more praise even if the song isn't groundbreaking at all.

Not to mention that this VERY WELL have went over a lot of people's heads, we're are understating how short of an attention span casual rap fans have nowadays. There's fans of "rap" who want to hear the least rap possible on a track. so again to us that's just another one of those songs and there's nothing to examine. to a newer listener the concept might have flew directly over there head.
I don't like the if some other rapper did it, it would be praised argument. That's not true, and we wouldn't even be able to prove it as each artists has their own way to write a song. And the song itself features the words cocaine in it. Multiple times. It's not that deep of a song. This isn't like Commons I used to Love Her. Nobody is not misunderstanding this song. People just may not like it

Was it really tho? i think your forgetting the error of music that we're in right now. People got mad that Tory Lanez took a trap record and actually put bars to it. Focused storytelling rap isn't something that some of the newer generation fans understand or even wanna hear. Now we could say Cole/Kendrick make conceptually deep albums and they are given their credit, which is true but in this generation the amount of praise they get is based heavily upon there likeability.

take a project like Damn or TPAB, there's intricacies to these albums that your not gonna get if you haven't grown in a certain environment, or have certain knowledge on subjects. you can still like the music of course but your not really in tune with everything being said. What Wale was stating, is that those same kids who don't "get" or relate to a certain record will still bump it several times trying to understand or just front like it's amazing simply because thats the popular consensus of Kendrick nowadays. That same listener will then dismiss Wale's more introspective tracks or straight call them trash because it's him. I don't think it's corny to call people out on being **** riders.
I think you make a lot of generalizations about these younger kids listening to rap. And based on what?

And me personally, I don't agree with the second paragraph. Obviously growing up in similar situations and environments gives you a different appreciation because you can relate to it, but you don't have to share the same experiences to understand the meanings behind an artists message.

While we're on Tory Lanez. Now I didn't like his album, and I didn't grow up in the same environment as he did and all that but I understood what he was talking about. I liked that he had a story to tell. Honestly, that's what made me listen to his album more than once although I didn't care for it. The problem for me was the execution. For one, he excels at singing, he's an average rapper to me. The best songs for me were his singles. There were instances in which he sounded like other rappers straight up. At one point I felt as if I could be listening to Drake, and there was one track in which it felt evident he was trying his best impression of what Kendrick did on GKMC.

I also don't like, again, the fact that Wale thinks that the listeners are the problem and that they need to change rather either understanding you have a select following or understanding that you need to change your music to appease them. Since he's not about to change, don't worry about who doesn't "get" your music and focus on making music that speaks to your fans

A lot of artist have this problem.

Wale is 30. Time to stop worrying about trying to appeal to 16 year olds. If they follow you, they follow you(Cole and Kendrick)

But i think he's happy with his album.

I just think he's fighting for something that he'll never get, glory and acclaim from fans universally like Cole and Kendrick. And he'll never get it, because he's just not likable. People don't want him to win, because he comes off like an *******.

Pppl in DC dont overwhelmingly like anybody from there tbh....the artists that get majority luv are all from else where, just is what it is and Wale's no diferent

And in simpler terms alotta ppl I know just dont like Wale cuz he cries and complains too much, nobody likes a cry baby expecially if you aint eem the best

Wale is the Dallas Cowboys of rap?

based on the facts that a lot of new hiphop listeners say **** like i don't wanna hear all those words in a rap, that people writing their own records doesn't matter, the crowd of people who think an album is "boring" if it can't be disgested all in one sitting.

that isn't all new hiphop listeners, but there's a big amount of them who echo these thoughts.

you are severely underestimating how naive and uninformed people are

Anybody else agree with Joe when Wale talked about Cole's bars about him and think that was a weak excuse? I don't have any homies that I will talk to on the phone and the next day hear him talkin' about me being bitter and basically fallin' off and think ish was sweet.

I said this and the usual suspects banded together to tell me I'm wrong [emoji]127998[/emoji]‍♂️

Man. Joe budden ruins this show :x today like dude just start yelling when they was talking about classic albums. "NO NO NO NO" didn't mention any points or anything. Dude sucks

Based on the two videos I watched, it could go back and forth with Joe. I haven't watched the Yachty one and I probably wont.

I'm still enjoying Joe as a whole. When he starts actin' goofy he teeters on that line but when he goes into deep voice Joe and gets serious he shows where his worth is.

I'd say watch it just to see how different Boat comes off from his music

I guess I may check it out after I watch this episode, but based on past interviews, I know he's a bit smarter than how he comes off in his music.

Ak's classics pick was a bit cringy, except the Trilogy pick. That was dead on

Majority of Akademics thoughts, opinions, and sayings come straight from places like The Coli, KTT, etc + Twitter :lol

he's been taking thoughts directly from boxden for years

but that's always been my point

people act like you can't be corny and still make good points

cats was talking earlier like people was saying ak was "cooler" than wale which was never the conversation

Everything he says is whatever is popular at the moment.

This dude never heard Jay song Hey Papi. A summer time anthem if you're 25+, this dude is not to be taken serious. At least Joe knows what he's talking about. This show is just funny to watch them 2 go back and forth. :lol

Are you f...

There wasn't a kid in my neighborhood that didn't know this song that summer. Reciting Bleek's verse was my personal homework for that month. I was 11. How is it possible he's never heard the biggest song off that album?

:|

Trilogy is a classic.

I lost whatever semblance of respect for dude when he said he never heard Hey Papi. People really take him seriously. :{

I could see if dude claimed to be all knowledgeable in everything hip-hop but I don't think he's ever claimed that

That's wild, that song was everywhere. Like you couldn't listen to the radio 2000-01 without hearing it.

We think it's ridiculous that he hasn't heard a particular song. Nobody asked for him to know everything hip-hop

Ain't that his whole thing?

To know about Hip Hop? I'm lost.
These new cats sure but I wouldn't expect dude to know every hip-hop song. I'm pretty sure dudes never heard "Suckas Need Bodyguards"

Plus was Hey Papi that huge? I personally forgot about the song. Not the hugest Jay fan though *yeshrug*
