Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Em album is bad. Bad for an Em album, bad hip hop/rap album, potentially an okay Pop Hop album.
It def sounds like he shot for a few concert theme songs

That’s an interesting thought. Wonder if complex got paid when Desus and Mero went to Vice.

This EDS-Budden topic was being discussed on boxden and they said they used to pay them ****** with snacks and **** :lol

I think this is different because they were just two ****** who were shooting the **** and Complex can’t really put a hold on that but this was an actual show with a concept and a lot of the guests were probably only negotiated/set up thru Complex and it was convenient on artists’ media runs being in the middle of NY and ****.

If we're keeping it a buck, he probably doesn't get a single cent. The song probably isn't even his anymore. I'm almost certain he doesn't own the publishing to that song, so when his deal was up, so was the money being generated for him via that record.

That's the story with a lot of guys from that era actually. The independent route wasn't nearly as grand as it is now, so you had no leverage.

It's why TLC could be as big as they were at their peak, and be broke.

the **** do you mean “he doesnt own the publishing for that song” :lol

how do you sign away your pub for your biggest hit...matter of fact your ONLY hit smh

jake paul just said you get 10k for every million views on the breakfast club and ive heard similar numbers for years...he’s the hottest **** going so idk who would have it set up better than him if it was possible

unless youre saying that theyre making 10k a month off of stuff outside of direct ad revenue from YouTube

I feel like for the overall promo and buzz it brought Complex and the ability to probably sell the rights to live/first airing of episodes to MTV/Revolt/BET in the near future (if that already wasnt on the table)...they probably should have gave them what they all were asking for unless it was approaching 7 figures. For all that you can go get DomIsLive or some other bootleg Akademiks and Lord Jamar and try it again.

10k a month and 10k for every million are two different conversations

and both are insane

eds is doing close or more than a million a week with all clips combined

you’re proving my point

just off the full show that’s 2 million views a week

Do you date?
It’s tough. Since my divorce I’ve had a few dates and nothing’s panned out in a way that I wanted to make it public. Dating’s just not where I’m at lately.

When you were dating, how’d you meet people? Tinder?
I mean, yeah.

Are you being serious?
Yeah, Tinder.

Really?
[Laughs] And Grindr. I also used to go to strip clubs.

I think a lot of long-term relationships start in strip clubs.
What can I say? Going to strip clubs is how I was meeting some chicks. It was an interesting time for me.

From a recent interview, that's what they're talking about.

Em isn't used to this new overly sensitive world we living it.

It happens alllll the time. Quite common because royalty checks extend over time, so you're not getting "that much" each time. If someone is willing to pay you 500k right now for the rights to your record, and you're broke? It's not an easy decision :lol

Like a prime example off the top of my head,

4tay could of been eating for life off of Who Do U Love from YG / Drake, (Drake!) and instead he settled and got like 300K from it.

It doesn't happen as often but it still happens all the time. Most of the older rap records you hear today the those artist don't see any residuals from it. That's why I applaud what guys like Nip and DOM K (Dom k especially. His manager is my neighbor and what he's done as an indie act is borderline legendary to me) do on the independent circuit.

well nvm then this is different

clearly joking

i can see both sides but i think it depends on your own ability to create.

im definitely taking that long term back end thousand bucks every 3 months from ASCAP before I just take an upfront check if I know I can make 10 more over the next few years.

It all depends. It varies. Royalty checks from ASCAP and BMI fluctuate depending on how hot / legendary / useful the record is.

IMO I genuinely don't know what I'd do. Example:

Unless you have a record like "This Is How We Do It" then I can't say that I wouldn't take the money because even with that record, you don't even know how much you're going to be getting off that record 10 years down the line. You don't even know if you'll ever make another "This is How We Do It" again. 10 years from then the record could be making 50 bucks in royalty checks every 3 months or so :lol

Hell Montell Jordan doesn't get a penny from This is how we do it and that's one of the most popping songs everrrr. Luckily, he can still tour off his hits and make money that way off of it but i'm sure he got a ton of money for selling the rights to it and who could blame him?

Complex confirmed to billboard that Joe Budden has officially left everyday struggle damn :eek :eek

*Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 245-255k SPS, 180-190k Sales. Eminem's latest LP has also fallen to a 49 on metacritic. This album is the definition of a flop

the show is drawing more eyes to joe and helping to generate money for joe even if he’s not being directly paid from it

he changed the name of his podcast due to eds popularity

but I absolutely get wanting money

at the same time it’s like performing at the Super Bowl everyday

it’s tough but he’s not hurting for money so I get him holding his nuts and walking off set pause

If true, rip ES.

I dont' think so. After seeing the success of ES, they'll have plenty of solid options to replace Joe, and the brand of ES has brilliant built and billed itself as an essential part of culture.

It'll be rough at first w/whoever they choose to replace joe with, but I think the person complex replaces joe with will work, and after a couple viral moments it'll hit.

The overarching reason as to why I don't think ES will tank is because they're literally filling a void that's 100% absent. There's never been a first take styled show for Hip-Hop and culture, they're filling a need.

DJ Akademiks and Nedeska's Everyday Skruggle.

Joe tried to cash out after one season not even mad. :lol

Just set the price on ****** an live ya life my *****.

they added a friday show to get people used to joe not being around

and I watched that jake paul interview and son is super gay lol

he said 1k to 2k for every million but I don’t believe that number

seem like ctg was flirting with him

Yea im with you...having a female a part of the show is a must for energy purposes.

Free and Angie are a collective 100 + years
old. Why would 14-35 year olds really be excited about them replacing Nadeska? I dont know who K Foxx is. But I would say somebody like Letty who is based in LA. She knows her hip hop and she is Hispanic which would play to the diversity crowd.

Some of you guys are speaking strictly from your on personal view and not realistic from a complex/show runner pov.

Saying Nadeska adds nothing to the show also makes me believe you guys want something more than an actual "moderator" on a two man debate show.

She does her job. Has occasional input. No different from Molly or Joy on the sport debate shows. Sure she can have more input and show personality but she has grown since the show first started IMO. If anything they need better producers that can find better topics and allow for deeper dives in place of some of the bs they cover.

:lol

http://www.hiphopoverload.com/joe-b...-they-only-offered-him-200000-so-he-resigned/

this ***** drunk as hell to be asking for 5 million a year for an ONLINE YOUTUBE SHOW that probably wont even see that revenue per year.

Only way that makes sense is if they were about to go to real television and even then its premature considering we dont know how this would do legitimately ratings wise and ad wise.

but then again im a broke college student talking **** on niketalk so what do i know about negotiating. reminds me of what irv gotti said about jay z and the “heat check” story. someone wanted him to do a soundtrack and he yelled out some ridiculous number and acted like he was finna walk away and they bit bc of his confidence but he told Irv deep down he didnt think they were gonna bite. Irv said he did that w/ Def Jam and it worked when he was getting like 200k a track or some ****. Maybe Joe know what he doing.

yeah thats true and I guess this is 2007 where the show money and social media hustle to sustain you regardless wasnt there.

Montell took an L if he didnt get 7 figures for How We Do It. Lowkey might be worth 8 in the long, long, long run...
