Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Damn, buddy holding back tears.

I bleed this Everyday struggle thing.

Yeah sounds like he doesn't have his paperwork right to the point he should'nt have had some of those conversations. Seems like doing work for Nike and Spotify the creator and talent should eat, not just Complex.

I get where Joe is coming from but do you think Stephen A Smith gets a cut immediately from any First Take sponsors? Nah you bring the Nike and Spotify sponsorship to the table when it's time to negotiate. Instead he pushed back on the Nike one and straight sabotaged the Spotify one.

Complex was probably like yo we're already having trouble generating revenue from a YouTube show - we can't have someone that fights us when we bring sponsors to the table. That's where the real money comes in.

Stephen A didn’t create the show

A better example would be VICE trying to cut Desus and Mero out of Nike money but telling them they have to wear Vapor Max or NBC telling Oprah she has to talk about some new movie without cutting her a check for said free marketing

They absolutely would have no trouble generating money if they werent greedy and cut joe and Ak in...this show had potential for product placement, Spotify/Apple Music content and most of all the ability to use its stellar performance numbers wise without any real promotion and leverage that into a nice little television deal. Maybe they can get a check from labels to premiere new videos and music and react/critique live. That type of **** could turn someones album promotion cycle completely around.

The show barely scraped its full potential and there were already so many ways they could have finessed this. Them folks in the suits just got greedy as always and underestimated the power of direct to consumer creative content. Which is sad given the business that theyre in and the type of things theyve seen happen over the past 15 years.

He might have come up with the idea but he lost those rights when he let Complex incur all the risk. They were paying him and Akademiks, provided the studio + equipment and had ten staff members working on the show. That's the downside of going corporate.

If he wanted the full benefits of those sponsorships, he has to do it independently or specifically have that in the contract. He knows that. That's why the podcast wasn't very convincing. He wanted special treatment - which I totally understand - but that's just not how corporate operates.

You the new intern for his podcast?

I'm not caping. But you can't sign a six month contract, expect a direct cut from any new sponsors, sabotage those sponsors, then expect the bag to come when it's time to negotiate with suits.

Joe has an independent mentality. It's why he stopped messing with major labels. And why Rory and Mal weren't shocked to hear this happened. I get where he's coming from but that doesn't mean he's 100% in the right. This is what he signed up for.

I for damn sure can expect that. I made the show, and am part of what made it pop. It's been clear that they been wanting to get rid of him a long time ago. They've been having problems. That one episode where he was just quite comes to mind
