They weren't trying to make him a heart throb. They were using a fish eyed lens. It's the same thing Hype was with Missy and Busta. It was an attempted party and cross over record.

The song is awful, from the upbeat Casio board video game sounding production to Babyface not fitting. It's like when they did that terrible Mic Geronimo and Brian McKnight song that didn't fit.

It was Def Jam trying to get him to go platinum like with City Is Mine. I guess it worked, but I think the street records were more responsible for Volume 1's success because those songs didn't even chart well.
