Exactly. I don't care what you guys think of it, you're free to say what you want. Just let him rest in peace. If you want to argue about it and criticize him, start another thread or gravedig the other one. This one is to celebrate his life. I feel like were going in circles here, just let it go, both sides.  Oh and btw, Phil Knight (founder of our beloved Nike) spoke at the memorial today. He had some interesting things to say

Well said

But it wasn't just the last 3 months of his life.  This all happened years ago, it just so happened to come to light recently.  Phil Knight is a joke, 1st saying that Bowerman was his hero then saying that when he passed he had to find a new one.  So a person can only be your hero when they are alive?  And Joe Paterno never did a heroic thing in his life, when he could have stepped up and made a difference and possibly be looked at as a hero he %$!# the bed.

In my opinion no.  Point is when he could have made the biggest impact, he passed it off to another instead of reporting to the authorities, and he still kept the guy around the program.  A hero would have reported it to the authorities and done everything possible so that Sandusky wasn't around Penn St. at all and that he wasn't having any ineractions with children.

... Joe was an amazing coach and its sad that he will not be remembered for the great things he did
for the university not limited to just the football field. Dude let his passion overshadow his integrity and it did some damage but
regardless of his actions he deserves his recognition as one of the best college coaches to do it. R.I.P Joe

You are arguing two different points. His failures in one situation do not erase other actions that occurred. It can overshadow your overall opinion of hdid but other 'good deeds' and philanthropic actions did occur. I think I get what you want to argue but you're wording it incorrectly

I find this to be interesting, and not in a good way either.
However, to suggest that Paterno was a man of honor and integrity, well, according to who? Those he protected, including Sandusky? Hell, members of the Klan consider their ranks men of honor and integrity as well.

Just because you've looked the other way, does not mean that you've done the honorable thing.

One more thing, that %@% Phil Knight can't come out and address kids killing and robbing each other over his shoes, yet his %@% can show up and pay homage to one of his endorsers, right?
Screw him too. All he really cares about is Penn State remaining a Nike sponsored school.

And yet I know at least one of the people in this thread going against Knight still buys everything Nike. The man could put doo doo on a plate and most of the guys here would eat it up. Complaining about sweatshops and people getting robbed and yet you guys are the one still buying his stuff. You guys get on Penn State students and the community for not taking a stand and taking action and here you are a messageboard for a shoe company that has been known to have sketchy practices. Hypocrisy I tell ya

Yes....I am here on Nike Talk. Yet that does not make me a Nike Talker any more than an atheist walking into a church, then becoming a believer.

Correction: The brass at Penn State kept Sandusky around. Joe was told third hand a day or so after the fact. Right after he was told, Joe told the AD and the President what was going on and they still let Sandusky run camps at the satellite campuses and let him stay employed on campus. Joe testified against Sandusky in the indictment trial. I'm not a Penn State at all but this is clearly scapegoating. Joe took hits Mike McQueary & the Penn State Administration should've and should be taking. Most normal people know rape/pedophilia is illegal & immoral but McQueary needed a sit down with Dad to figure out that he'd have to report it. It took Penn State a month or two to sit him down after everything came to light. Joe didn't witness the crime, Mike did, and he needed to talk to the Po-pos before Joe did.

I am basically arguing Phil Knight calling him his hero.  Phil Knight was a moron in that speech, he shouldn't even have been up there.  Him and JoPa never had a real deep friendship from what I have heard, it was just casual and they were acquainted with each other because of Nike being a Penn State sponsor.  The only reason he got a chance to speak is because he is Phil $+#!+@! Knight.  As for Joe Paterno I wish he retired 10 years ago when he should have, he was only there as a figure head anyways.
